Would anyone do Pie/Hill/Ceda?

I'd really hate to trade Hill now. His value is really low and he might be turning it around. However, I would do that trade.

That might be why he'd be attractive in a deal with Oakland. Beane would be buying low, especially if he's packaged with a Colvin or Pie.

I think Pie, Ceda, and someone from the Veal/Atkins/Hart family of arms is a fair deal. Harden's an elite talent, but he also threw fewer innings than Mark Prior from 2005-2007. That can't be understated.

From the Cubs point of view, if you think Hill is a headcase (which I don't) and you think Pie isn't going to pan out (I don't know about this one), why not part with them in a deal for a guy who might put you over the top?

I'd personally try and get by with like Colvin, Veal, Ceda and Cedeno, but I am not going to let Pie or Hill stand in the way of bolstering what's a suspect pitching staff.

What have Harden's injuries been?

From what I can gather:

Elbow Ligament Sprain (UCL), Oblique Strain, and Rotator Cuff Strain prior to 2007, then an "inflamed shoulder" in 2007.

I'd of thought that Peterson would have known this ahead of time and not drafted Harden?

Do you think his injury history, lessens his value to Beane?

why on earth would anyone think that beane would be interested in colvin?

"billy, here's a big mistake we made, but really, he's a prospect."

colvin is not a prospect. he's an example of wilken out-thinking himself again, trying to find a diamond in field of bigger diamonds.

I don't see why it wouldn't. This year is the first year he's had value to the organization(as a player or as an asset) since 2004.

I would have, to think so

You are probably right.

i mean, he's trying to find the next alex rios when he should be trying to find the next player who can put up a .900 ops in any season.

So is Colvin a small diamond or coal?

You won't get any argument for me about Wilken and his drafting philosiphy.

What I meant to say (and worded clumsily) was that I'd probably try and angle to give up Colvin before Pie, as in, if you want Hill, you can have Colvin. If you want Pie, you can have Veal. Something like that.

I'm no longer making sense.

So it's not just one recurring injury that keeps bothering him. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

For what it's worth, Colvin's BA is certainly lower than it should be right now, given how many line drives he's hit. At minimum, it's about 20 points low. If the "unknown" batted ball types were liners (and they probably were), it's closer to 30 points low. Just for the sake of argument, his best-case adjusted line is around .270/.335/.415.

Is that line particularly good? No. But it gels much more closely with what most expectations were from him... and he'd still have some projection left to work with. He'd have some slight value in a trade as a 3rd or 4th piece.

Wait, why would they probably be liners? And who determines what a liner is anyway?

Colvin has been consistently poor at hitting baseballs as a professional. I have a hard time believing it's about bad luck.

Colvin hit .306 at Daytona and .291 at Tennessee last year, and his AVG this year is 30 points lower than he's hit at any professional level.

Yeah, don't count me as somebody who cares much about batting average.

Colvins only 22 years old, and while he doesnt hold any trade value at this time, he's still young enough to pan out. I know Ryan Harvey, Brian Dopirek, and Luis Montanez were all once 22 as well, but that doesnt mean that Colvin will go that rout.

We're talking about BABIP, it's the whole point.

I believe the point was Colvin's value/status as a prospect. Adding 20-30 points to his average doesn't change the fact that overall his production has been quite weak.
