Beane is kidding himself if he thinks he can get a Haren-like package for Harden. Haren had 2(maybe 3) years to free agency and had thrown 220+ innings in 3 straight years. Harden is an FA after next year and hasn't thrown 220 innings combined the last 3 years.

It's really nice to hear the Cubs linked to him though, and there's rarely a season where the Cubs are in the race and don't make a relatively big deadline move

It's not always the "big splash" that puts a team over the top, too.

Last year's big deadline splash was Teixeira...

Sometimes it's the more down-to-earth move that does it for a team.

Yea Harden when healthy is great. Stone was saying this morning though that yesterday Harden was topping out at 92 and has been like that for his last 4-5 starts. Also said it seemed as if he was spending lots of energy to get the 92. Im not to fond of Stone at this point, so I really dont know how much of this is relative.

Well, if Harden is hurt or struggling with his stuff, he pitched pretty damn well in June in spite of it...

according to fangraphs, his avg fastball is 92.6 this year. yesterday he had a 96 mph and 97 mph fastball, and had several pitches faster than 92, from what i can see in the mlb gamecast.

I noticed the little blurb about the Cardinals, yes, Wainwright coming back will help but, I think their kidding themselves if they expect Mulder to be effective. I know about Duncan and his pixie dust however, I don't believe that involves a way back machine - Mulder is done.

Or they could move to Plan C and call the San Diego Padres to inquire about veteran left-hander Randy Wolf, who commands Hendry's respect.

As much as the Cubs covet Harden -- and they have been working this deal for at least a month -- Piniella likes having another lefty in his rotation along with Ted Lilly. Marshall could be the one, though the 25-year-old needs to show a longer stretch of consistency.

Instead of trying to get the best pitcher we can, we're going to go after a washed up lefty, because Lou wants two lefties in the rotation.

Wow. How would that help us, Jim? Randy's got 18 starts this year, posting a 5-8 record to go with a 4.59 ERA, a 1.422 WHIP, and a stellar ERA+ of 85. He is, in a word, garbage.

That would be like Trachsel all over again.

I wouldn't get too worried about the speculation DeLuca tossed in there.

Of course, Burnett's name is being tossed around too, and he's having a questionable season. He's obviously unhappy though, and he's only one half season removed from a 119 ERA+ performance so there's reason to believe a change in scenery would benefit him.

Wolf is just junky. Is it just speculation that Jim "respects" him? I don't see why any GM would respect what he's done. His last decent year was long ago. There's no indication he will be anything but horrible.

hendry respects wolf because he called him up and explained why he signed with san diego or whothehellever and not the cubs

Yeah, Jimbo respects guys like Trachsel & Wolf -- not because they're good, but because they managed to stick around for years even though they're not good.

That is a pretty good assessment. Three and half weeks gives Rich Hill time to master the strike zone in the minors (or not) and gives the Cubs and A's time to see if a) Harden can stay healthy and b) who the Cubs have to offer that Beane might want.

The Cubs (and their fans, meaning us) have to hope that Marquis has at least one good start until July 31.

Tim Hudson would be a really nice way to respond to the CC Sabathia deal.

Wait, this guy doesn't think Hudson is a 1-2 starter? Seriously?

He must be confusing Hudson with Mulder.

I really like some of the names I'm hearing tossed around, but one thing really concerns me - we've already got enough odds against us. Harden would be a stellar acquisition; however, what are the odds he stays healthy for any significant amount of time? I seriously don't think he's gonna last another 5 starts without having a problem. Who was the last SP with the amount of injuries he had in a 3 year time period that came back and was successful for almost an entire season?

Burnett seems like less of a gamble (and I think removing him from the negative situation in Toronto would definitely improve his #'s), but he's still a pretty big injury risk as well. What happens when we sell the farm for one of these guys and they go down, replacing them with Marquis?

I like the idea of Hudson - he'd be a pretty safe gamble.

I'm glad I'm not the GM...

It's simple, Jim..You get one of Harden/Burnett/Hudson for your #2 spot..Trade Marquis,do whatever it takes to get him out, keep Marshall as your #5..You have 2 lefties in the rotation..and call it a day

Yeah because the term 'Plan C' definitely equates to 'instead of trying to get the best pitcher we can'.

Hendry will do his typical of trading for a mediocre player (see Traschel/Kendall/Bowen) and sell it to the media and Cubs fans how it was a great aquisition and can really help us down the stretch and because they have "experience". Randy Wolf will be here soon.

DeLuca's logical progression seemed to be: A) CC, B) Harden, C) Wolf. He intimated that they've been working on deal for Harden, but there hasn't been any movement for over a month. Then, instead of suggesting Burnett, who, in my opinion is a far superior pitcher to Wolf. His reasoning for Wolf? Lou wants two lefties in the rotation.

I posed the question last night, but there was no answer. Aside from Steve Phillips, there's been nothing linking us to Burnett; and all arrows are pointing to the dynamic duo of Wolf and Maddux.

Drives me crazy because we already do have 2 lefties in the rotation, and actually Marshall could be better than the inexplicably loved Marquis for the rest of the season.

What we really could use is a solid replacement for Marquis, not a junky lefty to replace Marshall.

There's Will Carroll who points us to Burnett:
