His abuse of Marmol is just weird? He for the most part protects the starters really well, that's why it's so puzzling why he is so in favor of using Marmol every damn day!

Well, given how good Marmol is, it's not puzzling why he wants to use him every day.

Doesn't excuse it though.

i would like theriot, soto and derosa to get more rest than they have been getting. soto's career high in games is 118, and that was last season. you're paying blanco $2.7M to be the backup, and he is a solid defensive catcher who handles the staff well. theriot was dreadful in the last month to month and a half of last year, and could wear down again. derosa's numbers have declined in the second half of each of the last two seasons and he's 32 now. given that cedeno isn't much of a downgrade from theriot and fontenot isn't much of a downgrade from derosa, the cubs are in a good position to keep those guys fresh for when we hopefully make the playoffs.

i'm pretty sure that I could have managed the Mariners to 100 wins if I had Johnson, A-Rod, Griffey, the Martinez's, etc.

I just wanted to post this quote from Henry Blanco on Zambrano last night:

He's a competitor. Obviously, 130 pitches got to him today. He battled through it and kept the game close.

At Least someone understands the concept of overwork on the Cubs

Piniella does. For starting pitchers at least. It'd just be nice if he applied it to everyone else.

He tied the record for most wins in a season with Seattle. And I pretty sure if you were a manager of that team they would say I'm playing for this idiot and you wouldn't win 100 games :clapping: .

I would beat them with sticks if they said such a thing

Interesting issue comes up with this. How much rest do you think is given to a player with a full day off, vs a player who only plays 5-6 innings?

For example, DeRosa has been getting a lot of starts. But he also has been coming out of a lot of games, especially lately. Can he play in more games because of that? Or does he need the same number of true days off?

I definitely agree with you on both Theriot and Soto. Lou's starting to work Blanco in a little more and promises that Soto will get regular rest as the weather continues to be warm, but I'm taking a wait and see approach on that.

He actually never won 100 with those guys.

Lou went 116-46 with:

Lineup:

Dan Wilson

Olerud

Bret Boone

David Bell

Carlos Guillen

Al Martin

Mike Cameron

Ichiro

Edgar Martinez

Starters:

Freddy Garcia

Aaron Sele

Jamie Moyer

Paul Abbott

John Halama

Also, Sasaki, Arthur Rhodes, and Jeff Nelson in the pen

A good team, yes, esp with Boone on 'roids, but I wouldn't call them a 116-win team.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lou's visit to the mound tonight to see Marquis.

From where I was sitting, it looked like Lou was reading Marquis the riot act.

Haha could you have won 116 with the 2001 team?

Where to start with today's game?

Most notably, letting Z hit with the bases loaded and down 1 run in the 7th.

Our favorite senile manager then decided to burn Hoffpauir and Cedeno with 2 outs and no one on in the 9th.

I'll start with: The Cubs won a really exciting game.

Yeah, but leaving Z in to hit, then walk one man before a yanking was weak.

so stupid, lou.

thank god for Jim Edmonds. :vomits:

i don't know. i mean, z isn't much worse, if at all, than most of the bench guys. plus he's a switch hitter. cox had a lefty and righty ready to go, so it wasn't THAT ridiculous of a move, even if he did get pulled directly after.

He's got a career 52 OPS+. He's fun for a hitting pitcher, but he is that much worse than the bench guys.

Burning Hoff like that in a tight game was dumb-dumb-dumb.

That was the only thing that really bothered me in the game. That and trotting Marmol out again
