How are they any good?

Here is my explanation, everyone but Haltz look

SORCERY

Anyway, don't the Cardinals have some crazy record in the last whatever games Wellemeyer has started or something?

They really do decently for having a lot of trash. They've got to come way down to earth... right? I mean, not even .500 down to earth, but below that.

I don't expect this pitching of the Cards to last all season. There's a reason that most pitchers in their rotation was available for the Cards to pick up. They're not very good. (Wainwright, excluded)

How about Lohse? That dude hasn't given up a run in 2 starts. I can't wait until they pick up Francis Beltran.

He's basically the Cards version of Jason Marquis. Need proof:

The difference, the Cubs.........wayyyyyyyyyyyyy OVERPAY for Marquis a former Cards, and the Cards paid just what for the former Cubs.

Small sample size; however, Duncan does work magic on pitchers. Unfortunately he'd have to work 25 hours a day to turn that trash heap rotation into something reliable for an entire season.

Well they had to replace Marquis athletic abilities minus the attitude and the mouth SOMEHOW. :P

Duncan has a way of squeezing one or two great seasons out of mediocre pitchers. However, their arm usually falls off sometime between the 2nd and 3rd season underneath of him. Name one guy who has had extended success under Duncan that didn't end up with major arm problems. Matt Morris is the only one that I can think of off of the top of my head that was good and lasted more than a couple of years under Duncan.

Are you saying that there's some mechanical thing he teaches that puts undue stress on a pitcher's arm? Curious because that's something I don't know much about.

Edit: Don't know if they apply to this or not, but Dave Stewart and Eckersley (sp?) were both good for extended periods under Duncan, I think.

Duncan does great with certain pitchers. However, he tries to turn every single pitcher has into a sinkerballer, regardless of their abilities. He and Anthony Reyes have had major clashes, simply because Reyes throws a four-seamer.

This rotation is not supposed to make it through the season. Piniero will probably be replacing Thompson as early as next Sunday (Thompson to the BP). Mulder is supposed to be looking really good and should be the next to return...We'll see but it sounds good so far. I have not heard a firm timeframe on Clement and then Carpenter will be back in the second half. All those things will not work out I am sure but that is the plan. These guys are just supposed to keep things competetive until others are healthy. It has been fun to watch so far but there is a long way to go...

Wasn't Welly with the Rangers before that?
No; you're probably thinking of Koronka. Welly was with Florida and Kansas City after leaving the Cubs.

I thought Mulder was throwing in the 70s

If this collection of crap Cardinals team manages to compete, my belief in the Cardinal pixie dust will be solidified.

Mine was solidified when they made Weaver a clutch playoff starting pitcher.

Or perhaps he was thinking about Jon Leicester?

I forgot who Welly went too, thanks NCCF. And I think Red was right, it may have been Leicester.

I think it's an interesting move putting Welly back as a starter. I'll never forget his first save.

I find it highly comical all the Cardinal fans who are expecting Chris Carpenter back in the 2nd half, starting, and being the Chris Carpenter of old. Its not going to happen. Maybe he will return to his former self next year, but he wont this year.

But he's looking sexy doing it.

This thinking sounds familiar.
