i'm definitely happy with Crean. he's a solid coach and i enjoy watching the style that his teams played at Marquette. he was definitely one of my top choices and, after recent events, i'm somewhat surprised he took the job.

now i hope he can bring Bassett back into the fold. i would think Crean's style of play would be great for him.

I selfishly hope Bassett is back. I watched him a lot in high school and always seemed like a good kid when I talked to him. On the other hand, I hope the door hits Ellis on the way out. Not sure what message it sends allowing either back, though.

If what I've read about the dismissals being due to drug use are true then they both need to be gone. Crean needs to send out a very loud message early that lack of discipline and violating rules is a thing of the past.

I think this is likely the way it has to happen. Not sure they can be allowed back; but, of course, we are not privy to all the information.

Also, I can't imagine any coach would move from Kansas to Oklahoma State. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's a big reach. Probably even bigger than Kravitz's pet project of Izzo to Indiana, which was laughable.

I think Ellis and Bassett will be allowed back. The drug thing may be an issue, but I think it's pretty clear that wasn't the reason they were kicked off the team. If so, there would be other players gone also, from what I hear. I'd imagine both players will be on a zero tolerance type of deal. I'd guess they'd be suspended for a decent amount of time. It's still gonna be hard to completely discipline any player for any single thing or group of things that has happened since the Sampson firing. If there are deeper issues from when Sampson was in charge, well that's a different issue. And I believe if that was the case, that discipline would have been brought down a lot earlier than the day before a new coach was hired.

anyone else think the Self to OSU rumor has zero chance of happening?

local ESPNRadio just said Self, Gillespie and Tubby Smith were candidates. none of those make any sense at all (in terms of leaving their current jobs)

Lol. Why stop there OSU? Phil Jackson and John Wooden are probably interested too.

Sounds like the "candidates" for the Indiana job.

don't tell that to crazy illini fans, they'll think you're a ku alum. i said this exact same thing on the scout board, along with my reasoning (ie: ku being a top 5 program nationally, and one could argue, the most prestigious job in college basketball seeing as how the guy who invented the game used to occupy the position), and some guy said i was a delusional ku alum, i swear.

so, i guess that 1. stating that self is not going to abandon ku, and 2. stating that ku is a top collegiate program makes me not only delusional, but a ku alum. this is why people hate UI fans on the internet, most of them are too young to drive or are too old to go to the bathroom by themselves.

i wish we could just stop the hate. self is not going to leave kansas, kansas is not illinois and osu is not kansas, get over it.

Aren't you thinking of Rupp at Kentucky?

Ish really hit the fan in Tucson the last few months.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Yay, we can agree about something in college basketball.

The only reason I'm contemplating not rooting for UCLA in the title game is cause of you.

At least you believe they'll get there.

Pretty sure the guy who invented it was James Naismith, and then KU had the legendary Phog Allen.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out if that was sarcasm or a joke that I didn't get. Rupp wasn't even alive when basketball was invented.

On top of all of that, which I agree with. He cannot leave to stay in conference. I am sure at some point he would like to coach at his alma matter, but he cannot leave KU to go in conference. No matter the money they throw at him. He will get a nice raise out of this though.

Self will use this to pry some serious coin from the KU AD, but that's about it. KU has some very wealthy donors, including Phil Anchutz, who's worth twice what T Boone Pickens is. I don't foresee money being a problem. I think our AD has said even they won't be "T-Booned." This Final Four is timed quite nicely for Self's bank account, though.

Now if the NBA comes calling, there might be a problem. I personally don't think Self would thrive in the NBA, but I think he'd be interested, especially if the Oklahoma City team was inquiring.

I also can't see Gillespie being interested. He's at freaking Kentucky, for God's sake. Tubby maybe, I guess. Minnesota isn't much of a basketball school, and OSU has a nice history, but I think the Cowboys will likely end up with a Chris Lowry or Xavier's head coach.

I have heard though that Gillespie didn't really like the pressure cooker at UK. But, I doubt he leaves there.

Per ESPN Cal hires Mike Montgomery. Great hire.

Depending on what happens at Oregon and Oregon State, the Pac-10 could have their strongest group of coaches in a long time. That conference was great this year and will remain top tier with those guys. I think the Big Ten is rising also with their coaches and the Big East is just a beast. The ACC Big 12 and SEC, I'm not so sure about.

Yeah but the Big East has Jerry Wainright. That knocks them down a lot.

Wainwright is like a negative 3 on the coaching scale

any rumors as to who replaces Crean at Marquette?

The main two guys I hear mentioned are Majerus and the guy from WKU who said he was going to South Carolina. Young guy, can't think of his name.
