My guess will be that he goes to the Vikings. If that team got a good QB, they'd be very, very good.

He'll come back to the Packers or stay retired still IMO.

Everyone is saying how this is a bad situation for the Packers to be in, but they really do have all the leverage in this.

So the Packers don't have to give him his release?

I don't see him going to Tampa or Baltimore. I don't think Brett just wants to play, he wants to win a championship. Minnesota is the best option.

The Packers aren't interested in bringing him back. That said, they probably don't want to see him play elsewhere. The way Brett has done this is to try to make it a mutual parting. If he wanted to be a jerk, he could just flat out apply for reinstatement. That would force the Packers to either accept it, or release him. He's trying to get them to do that voluntarily.

In late March during the NFL Owners Meeting, Favre informed the team he wanted to play again, multiple sources have told FOXSports.com. Not only did he insist he was returning, both head coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson agreed that he still had something left and they would welcome him back. Despite the fact that those close to Favre have stated Thompson did not want Favre back, Thompson was the deciding factor in agreeing it was not too late to have him un-retire at that time and start for the Packers in 2008.

In fact, team brass went as far as chartering a jet to fly to Mississippi to make it official later that week. The agreement was that the NFL's all-time leading passer would return for the year but help make it easier and palatable for Rodgers, who would have to wait another season to take the helm.

The group was set for this huge move when Favre suddenly phoned the team two days before the meeting was to take place and informed McCarthy that he had changed his mind yet again and was staying retired. While team officials were stunned by Favre's reversal, they made the decision to move on and draft his replacement, a move that Favre at the time understood. The Packers selected two quarterbacks in April's draft, Louisville's Brian Brohm in the 2nd round and LSU's Matt Flynn in the 7th round.

If that is true, Green Bay's decision makes perfect sense. But in the back of my mind the Packers were minutes away from a Super Bowl. Bringing Brett back gives them a great chance to win the Super Bowl. And isn't that what every organization should be about?

There's a lot of Carolina rumors, which is ridiculous because the Panthers clearly think Jake Delhomme and Matt Moore are the answer.

They are not. I'd honestly love to have Favre if that were to transpire.

Matt Moore is not the answer to anything.

The only possible explanation is that they're hoping he can pull a Derek Anderson (another middling Oregon St QB who inexplicably is now decent in the pros).

But I'm not pleased with anything in Carolina's QB stable right now.

Favre seeks his release from the Packers.

Link.

Hey Brett, you know how you could really stick it to the Packers?......DA Bears :D

If that happen, there would be mass-suicide alerts in Wisconsin.

First Edmonds then Favre? Who would the Bulls or Hawks sign to beat that?

Bulls already did their enemy signing with John Starks

Does this image make Packer fans cringe?

As a Vikings fan it kind of makes me cringe.

I don't see the Packers allowing it to happen. And if he were given an unconditional release, I'm not sure if the Vikings would go after him unless they were completely sure he was 100% committed.

It makes me laugh :-)

As a Packers fan and owner, this makes me puke.

Brett has been interviewed by Greta Van Sustren who is from Wisconsin and has told the Packers that he won't be a #2 man behind Rogers. The Packers won't release him and asked Brett for a number of teams that he would be willing to go to, but Brett wants to be released and wants to make the decision himself so that he can go to a competitive team. Brett seems a little angry with the Packers brass which can only increase the chances that Brett lands with the Bears. But again, do the Packers have to release him if Brett desires that? Oh and Brett said he was pressured to retire by the Packers because he wasn't sure that he had made up his mind yet.

Brett has no say. He can force the Packers to place him back on the roster, but he has no leverage to force a release. He can ask for a trade, but he doesn't have any say in where he is traded.

If he comes back and is placed on the roster, he could be a malcontent if he isn't starting, but that's about all the leverage he has. If he announces he wants to come back, but refuses to show for training camp, etc if he isn't released, the Packers would then have a reason to suspend him which would then be the same as if he stayed retired.

It's a messy situation, but I don't blame the Packers for calling his bluff. What they are doing is exactly how they should handle it. My guess is their hope is Favre decides it isn't worth it and decides to stay retired.

Second best scenario is that they trade him. Could they get anything good for him? Who can take on that salary?

Yeah, they could trade him. But they aren't going to trade him to anyone who could challenge them. They are going to want to trade him out of the division, and likely out of the NFC.

That reduces the number of teams dramatically.

Still, they could trade him for a decent player. But who is going to offer anything decent in return when you know that Brett doesn't have many options?

Brett could have returned with the Packers in the spring. It sounded as if it was pretty certain that Brett was going to come back. They have a great team. Now everyone is going to hate him for starting this mess up. I hope he either goes to the Bears (which won't happen) or he officially retires.

The only teams that are going to offer anything of value for Favre are those who: 1. Don't already have a QB to whom they are committed and 2. Think they are a QB away from being a true contender.

That also limits the number of teams with interest.

I think that one of two things will happen to Brett, both of which will end up with him not playing next year.

1. The Packers activate him and keep him on the roster, where he will not see the field.

2. The Packers trade him to one of the Siberia's of the NFL.

There is no way that Brett will be a backup and there is no way he will play for a crappy team. His ego is too big. That said Thompson is a boob for forcing him out, Favre could get the Packers to the Super Bowl this year, whereas I don't think the same that can be said of a team led by A-Rod.

I think TT made a huge mistake because in the NFL your window isn't long, and GB could be in the SB this year if Brett was playing. You have to go for it when you have the parts, much like in baseball because you never know when the window will close.

As I said earlier, Favre's either going to stay with the Packers (where Thompson gives into the fans and makes Favre the starter) or the Packers will force him into retirement. There's no way Thompson trades or releases Favre.

Peyton Manning had knee surgery this afternoon. Status for season opener is uncertain.

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080714/SPORTS03/80714062/1004/SPORTS

Peyton Manning underwent surgery this afternoon to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee, and rehabilitation for the Indianapolis Colts quarterback could last six weeks.

That leaves Manning’s status for the team’s Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears uncertain.
