LOL Dan Morgan.

Every year he 'looks' healthy and then all of a sudden he has lingering concussion symptoms. He is/was the Panthers' Mark Prior. Have fun with that.

Panthers signed some guard from SD. Toniu Fonoti. He's pretty good. Carolina keeps signing people at positions I think they're drafting at, so I'm not sure what they'll do.

I am guessing you are a Panthers fan. What's the deal at QB with you guys? Is everyone solidly behind Jake, or has everyone soured on him?

Also, don't look now, but Tampa is having a really nice offseason. They may overtake Atlanta for my most hated team. Then again, no one sucks worse than the dirty birds.

I think they're still behind Jake. In any case they won't pick a QB before the 3rd round, so it's unlikely anyone would be able to challenge him anyway. I believe his contract is up after this year, though - he looked great last year before his injury, but if he can't keep that up, they'll likely go the FA route in 09.

Tampa's got a decent nucleus. If they can figure out which of their 7 quarterbacks will start they could be very dangerous.

And I agree with you - I don't dislike any NFL team more than Atlanta.

Whats wrong with Atlanta?

They're cut-blocking cheap-shot artists, their former CB ran his mouth off to Steve Smith all the time, their former dog-murdering QB had magical powers against my team to the point where he literally levitated 5 yards across the goal line for a game-winning TD that kept us out of the playoffs in 2004, and on top of that Delhomme got his season-ending injury against them last year.

Apart from that, they're alright.

Yep, you said it all right there. From Neon Deion to DeAngelo Hall, the birds have always been a "me first" group of individuals. The whole "Free Mike Vick" t-shirt thing on MNF didn't surprise me in the least. They run a good coach out of town in Mora Jr, and they hang dogs or support people who hang dogs. My least favorite Saint ever Joe Horn fits right in with them. Everytime the birds play in the Superdome, their fan base of 25 people arrive and act like trash. All my bartender friends in the Quarter hate ATL weekends. MC Hammer did a video featuring the birds, and they adopted that horrible "2 Legit to Quit" thing. The Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert left us to go to there, as did Morten Anderson. They can't even sell out Braves playoff games, and the only reason they come close are opposing fans like us. You go out in ATL on a Tuesday night and everyone's dressed like they're about to go to an LA club. The cheesyness oozes out of that city. But I did date a girl from Athens awhile back. She was cool.

I meant just the falcons not atlanta. Michael Vick was their leader for 4 or 5 years. If Manning or Brady did something just as heinous their teammates would have supported him the same way. Mora Jr. was a good person not a good coach. Plus, Mora Jr. was a player's coach and more or less let the "me first" attitude continue. No arguments about Hall or Vick. You can't judge a fanbase over 25 fans. The Cubs' fans have a bad reputation because of this sensation.

And there's even more rumblings about Pacman Jones to the Cowboys. John Clayton is reporting the Cowboys are the only ones seriously pursuing him and the cost will be around a fifth rounder.

I'd take him for that. 2nd day picks are a crapshoot anyways. The last 5th round pick that actually turned out well was probably Herschel Walker back in '85. Now it's all about what kind of money and playing time he expects to get.

yeah, there haven't been any 6th round players to lead their teams to 4 Super Bowls recently

And how many ended up on the practice squad or in the Arena League? The draft is, and always has been, a roll of the dice. If you can get a young player with proven abilities for a 5th round pick I'll take that. The Patriots were able to steal Moss for a 4th rounder.

Yeah, but that wasn't the point. the point was that you suggested that Hershel Walker was the last 5th rounder to turn out well, which is utterly absurd.

i just randomly took a look at the 5th round of a couple of nfl draft years:

1996: Joe Horn, Fred Miller, Christian Peter, LaRoi Glover

2000: Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Dante Hall, Clark Haggans, Sammy Morris

2003: Terrence Holt, Justin Gage, Jordan Black, Bobby Wade, Donald Lee, David Diehl, Brian St. Pierre, Dan Koppen, Hunter Hillenmeyer

so yeah, just using a random sampling of three nfl years, i have found that it is indeed absurd to suggest that the 5th round has produced no good nfl players in almost 25 years.

I was only referring to 5th-round picks of the Dallas Cowboys. Here's a list of those players:

07: No Pick

06: Pat Watkins

05: No Pick

04: Sean Ryan

03: No Pick

02: Pete Hunter

01: Matt Lehr

00: Michael Wiley

99: No Pick

98: Darren Hambrick, Oliver Ross

97: No Pick

96: Kenneth McDaniel, Alan Campos

95: Edward Hervey, Dana Howard

94: No Pick

93: No Pick

92: Gregg Biggs, Rod Milstead

91: Darrick Brownlow

90: No Pick

89: Keith Jennings, Willis Crockett, Jeff Roth

88: No Pick

87: Everett Gay

86: No Pick

85: Hershel Walker, Matt Darwin

Not exactly an overwhelming list of success right there.

Yeah, I was just making a joke (sort of) about the whole ATL thing. There are bad fans in every bunch. I've seen LSU fans be terrible at games, and I have friends who say they will NEVER go back into the city of Chicago after that NFC title game 2 years ago. I just like giving the dirtybirds a hard time. As far as the team goes, I just can't get past all the Neon Deion, Rison, DeAngelo Hall, Vick types; I hate it when people have to hype themselves. I'm glad Warrick Dunn, a very classy guy, is no longer with that team so I can hate all of them again. And if Manning or Brady's teammates flaunted their support if either of them had tortured dogs, I'd be trashing the Colts or Pats. By the way, remember all the pro-Vick signs in the stands in the GeorgiaDome during the MNF game? Pathetic.

Titans sign Raiders' restricted free agent Chris Carr to an offer sheet.

The Raiders now have a week to match it.

Soccer, what do you know about Carr? I know he's pretty young but not a whole lot else.

He's a decent return man, but nothing special, and didn't really play much at cornerback so I don't know much about his abilities there.

Doesn't sound bad. Thankfully we don't have to give up a draft pick should we sign him.

I wasn't really unhappy with Chris Davis' return skills last year, but apparently Titan management wasn't real happy with him.

Many are speculating that this signing is to fill the void that will be caused when Pacman is traded or released.

No doubt. Carr is pretty much only a return man from what I can tell (and what soccer said).

I still would like to see Chris Davis in that role one more year, but if Carr can do the job and we aren't paying him much I have no real problem with it.

Huh, the Dolphins actually made moves? Go figure. What do you guys know about Tab Perry, Nathan Jones, and Keith Davis? Clearly the secondary is a major target. Also, I sure hope that Josh McCown gets beat out/released before the season starts...he's a completely redundant part.

I'm also ecstatic to find good news about Marcus Monk, who had an outstanding pro day. A freak injury in the preseason rendered him a fourth option at receiver this season after three outstanding years prior, and I was worried that he wouldn't get the attention or opportunity he deserved because of that. Talk was that he was a 5th rounder at best and possibly a free agent. But he demonstrated terrific hands and solid cutting ability and route running at his pro day; perhaps best of all, he got his 40 time down into the 4.4 range. He's being talked about as a possible first day pick now.

I'm guessing Tab will be used as a kick returner. He had a few highlights with the Bengals doing that and he was fantastic at UCLA returning kicks (not Maurice Jones-Drew-fantastic but he was still pretty good).

Yeah, the report I read emphasized that aspect of his game, and also said he was good on kick coverage as well. Nate Davis's review said the same for his kick coverage skills. Odd area of concentration. A kick returner wasn't exactly high priority with Ginn in the fold, but I guess it can't hurt, and with Booker and Chambers gone, there are going to be some opportunities for receivers to work into the lineup. I'd like to get a decent #2 to go opposite Ginn, as I don't have a ton of faith in Derek Hagan. To date he's a possession receiver with bouts of the dropsies, which is a nice little contadiction.

Nate Jones is really good at rushing the QB but that's about it. He only had one sack this past year (came untouched vs. the Patriots), but he got a lot of pressure. He is probably best known for being the player that knocked Brett Farve out of the game.

Keith Davis' man job was special teams ace. Whether its on punts or kickoffs, 95% of the time he is either making the tackle or within an arms reach of the ball carrier when he goes down. When he went out with a shoulder injury, out return teams took a major hit.

More than anything both players are Parcells' pets and he couldn't wait to get reunited with them.

It'd be fantastic if he got an opportunity to work into the rotation as a receiver. He's got the ability, that's for sure.

Peter King talks about the owners meetings...some notes:

1) There's a proposed penalty for hair that covers the name on your jersey. Peter thinks it's unlikely to pass because of perceived racial overtones.

2) It's likely that defenses will get 2 players with headsets in the helmets thanks Bellichek and Spy-gate. 22 teams said yes last year. Only 24 need to say yes for it to pass. Only 1 player on the field at a time would get the headset, but one on the sideline could wear it in cases of substitution. If both those players happen to be out, or injured, then it's back to signaling in from the sidelines.

3) Nothing is being done about the "last second time out" rule that was enacted last year that allowed teams to call time out just before a last second field goal kick. In fact, no teams even brought it up as a point of concern on the end of year surveys.

Packers will host the Vikes to open the MNF schedule.

So how stupid is the NFL? I mean, Broncos-Raiders on Monday Night? I realize that it's a rivalry and all but the Chargers-Broncos (since they obviously want a West Coast game) would have been a heck of a lot better than Denver-Oakland.

The NFL wants to save the Chargers-Broncos game for a better time slot. They aren't going to put a great game in a slot that starts at 10:15 at night on the East Coast. It hasn't really been a good matchup any of the 3 years they've had this late game.

That would work too. Either way, the Raiders shouldn't be on a featured timeslot, which I guess was my point in the first place.
