MLBTR and Rotoworld are talking about this 16 year-old from the DR that is projected to be the next great shortstop. The Indians are apparently working with his agent Scott Boras (shocker) to negotiate a signing bonus.

What I have to wonder about is why a team with a good shortstop blocking a potentially better shortstop prospect is going after this guy...but the Cubs who have no hopeful shortstops anywhere in their organization aren't in on his signing.

Apparently he's being touted as the next A-Rod or Miguel Cabrera. If anyone else knows more about this kid, and whether the hype is warranted, please feel free to interject.

Here are some links on the guy:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

Odds and Ends: Bedard, McPherson, Salcedo

What's with this Edward Salcedo kid? The 16 year-old Boras-repped shortstop was linked to the Tribe but not signed as of February 3rd. From what I'm hearing it still sounds like he'll end up with Cleveland for around $3MM.

http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=123749

"Edward Salcedo is a FA SS with a 6'3'', 190 lb. frame from La Vega, Dominican Republic. Big League body, strong and athletic. Smooth, easy defensive actions, easy plus arm, can really play SS. Aggressive swing, power projection, deep load from wide base, good bat speed, geared to drive fastballs, timing will be an issue. All the tools to be a top player. Potential 1st round type if in draft."

He's been rumored to have signed with like 3 teams already, Cleveland being the latest. Both sides have denied they have a deal in place, though Cleveland is likely the favorites. Boras was supposedly demanding a boatload (like 5 mill), but it sounds like the price is getting a little more reasonable (though obviously still very high). There's been a few guys from ESPN that has said he's been a little overrated to deserve that much money, but we'll see.

Because the Indians are smart and the Cubs are stupid?

We could buy 3 Salcedos for the money we gave Samardzija.

(Let me preface my statement by saying, I know the Cubs need more depth at the MI positions, but)

How is it that the Indians are smart, and the Cubs are stupid for not getting in on a 16 SS prospect, who is going to command more then what alot of early MLB draft picks would demand? I understand the Cubs need some semblance of a talent at SS, but at what cost? If I am the Cubs, I'm not dealing with Boras based on POTENTIAL, like this Salcedo, I rather deal with Boras on clients who can help the Cubs, within the next decade (which is how long, the Salcedo will take to developed, IF he develops at all).

Salcedo is the future Wilson Betemit, nice player and all, but not worth the hype (real or Boras).

And this argument might make sense if, you know, the Cobs hadn't blown all that cash on Samardzija.

I'd take my chances, this organization needs a SS. Nothing ventured, nothing changed. If the guys ends up being hald of what A-Rod is, it would be worth the investment.

Sounds like the next Joel Guzman. Considering he's already 6'3", he'll probably be a third baseman or corner outfielder within the next three years

The extreme hype surrounding Edward Salcedo now appears to have been unwarranted. Even Chris Kline has said so and he was the one who initially started the hype machine rolling on Salcedo last September (he's also the one who squashed this recent Internet rumor that Salcedo had signed with the Indians - follow the Rotoworld link). There were rumors that he'd sign with the Yankees, then the Mariners and finally the Indians last fall and that his bonus demands were around $4-5 million and now in the winter it's dropped to around $3 million. Boras has been doing his usual weird manuvers to hype him up too (hiding him for a while, mentioning bringing him to the U.S. for a workout, etc.). The whole Salcedo thing is extremely strange.

Teams would be better off investing in quantity at lower bonus demands than just a few big-priced guys when it comes to Latin America. The Cubs have been improving from their mid-00s in Latin America but still can stand to improve a lot. I don't blame a team for not getting involved with Salcedo given how strange the whole thing has been and how high the price demands are.

I still haven't figured out how Glaus lasted at SS as long as he did.

I wasn't for the Cubs signing Samardzija at the deal they did. To me Shark has Chad Hutchinson written all over him. And even if they signed Shark to a reasonable deal, I still wouldn't try to get in on Salcedo.

Besides, Shark's contract has no bearing on what the Cubs could do with Salcedo. I get the feeling the Cubs just don't think he's worth the money and the trouble. And quite frankly, I'm tired of waiting for potential, I rather have production.

First off, he's 16 not 6. Secondly, what potential have the Cubs been waiting on? The Cubs have never had a good farm system outside of a few years earlier in this decade. And the main reason the Cubs have sucked for most of our lives is because they don't take chances on potential like this enough. They routinely spend at the top 5-7 of all teams in baseball and have nothing to show for it because they can't find and develop talent like this.

I should say...around a decade. No team is going to see the kid's potential, till he's atleast 20. I mean, look how long it's taken Felix Pie to develop, and he still not there. I don't mind the Cubs taking chances, but calculated chances. Is this Salcedo kid legitimately talented, or is this a case of Boras overhyping ANOTHER young player? Spending essentially 1st rd money on a kid you have no clue on how well he will perform is not a chance I want the Cubs to get in on. And I realize the Cubs need some SS prospects, but overpaying an unproven SS prospect....is NOT the way to do it.

Exactly. This is an even bigger risk than spending a lot of money on a first round SS out of high school who is raw and unproven but has a lot of tools.

Maybe they'll trade us Peralta.

Maybe they will trade Peralta to San Diego. Thereby allowing San Diego to trade Greene to the Cubs.

Now why'd you have to go and start that :P

I can see why the Cubs are likely not going to get him, but I would like to see the Cubs loosen those purse strings to get him and con't to increase signing money internationally.

Luis Montanez says hello....

If the kid is WONDERFULLY talented, then I could see the Cubs going after him, but if you have even the slightest doubt...it's not worth throwing money away, even if it's not mine.

I don't care about what position he plays. I wouldn't spend the money on him because he is a SS prospect in a system devoid of SS prospects. I would spend the money on him because I thought he was a good player. It wouldn't matter if he was a RHP or a 3B (places where the Cubs seem to have a lot of high end talent in the majors and minors).

Well, he's only 16, I would assume that if he's as good as he's touted, he wouldn't be ready to go until he were, at the earliest, 20 years old. And a lot can happen in 4 years. Peralta could fall off the face of the earth, get traded, leave to free agency, etc.

I agree. There's obviously some weird stuff with Salcedo and the Boras hype (I mean big time international players like the Mariners and Yankees don't drop out for no reason) and I don't have a problem with the Cubs pushing hard on Salcedo given the price tag (as long as they did their due diligence and scouted Salcedo which I'm sure they did).

The Cubs definitely need to beef up internationally. Wilson has gotten off to a great start on the Pac Rim but I'd like to see the Cubs become more active in Latin America (and Europe?).
