We all know about the dog days of August for the players, especially now with the greenie ban.

But what about us fans right now? The weeks between the cubs convention and pitchers and catchers reporting should be the dog days of January. I was so itching for some baseball around the cubs convention despite the fact that I didn't even go. I've been stuck watching this dvd set of great Cubs performances and I'll be honest, it isn't really anything like an adequate substitute

There isn't even cubs news anymore. The only news of the day is 1 fewer day (As of Saturday its 18 days I believe). Am I the only person that feels this way?

Nope. I was thinking about this a lot today. A lot of things have "dog days". School... Usually the month of November and February...

And there really isn't a substitute. At least last year, we had the Chicago Bears keeping us busy all off-season.

I've been on a fiend lately too. In fact, I spent about two hours this afternoon heavily looking at flight/hotel costs for April and May Cubs away games. I did pretty well for myself in calendar year 2007, and as a result I want to treat myself to a weekend of Cubs. The only problem is, it'll probably be a solo trip, as my girlfriend doesn't want to go and my Cards fans buddies obviously aren't interested... I don't mind it at all, but it'll be something I'm not used to.

No, you aren't alone. I have been thinking that this is the worst month of the whole year for sports. College football is over, college basketball is not important yet, the NBA sucks, the NHL is the NHL and who gives a good [expletive] about tennis? This month is a joke.

I went to a Marquette basketball game tonight and I still don't care about basketball. Ouch.

You can always put it out there to your NSBB buddies to see if they would be interested in joining you for a weekend series somewhere.

Sports from mid January to March are pitiful. You got the Superbowl and for NASCAR fans the Daytona 500. Outside of that you got NBA, NHL and College Bball regular season which unless you are a die hard fan you don't care about.

I agree with November, but I always thought the "dog days" of spring semester were from after spring break til finals.

Yup. This was very true in highschool. Because after spring break there weren't really any holidays or days off until the end of the year. And it sucked.

i'm certainly bored with the lack of sports right now, but i don't know that I could get into baseball in january. baseball = spring/summer

i feel the same way about the April scrimmage games in college football and August NFL preseason...just can't get into it when it's at the wrong time of the year

That's exactly how I feel.

I've been making solo trips to Chicago for the past couple of years, and I always have a blast. I've met people from the board here at games and we usually have as good a time doing that as I would if I had made the trip with a bunch of friends from home.

I'll be doing it again this year, and I've already made plans with some of the people.

I was just gonna say - away games on weekends in April or May are all within about four hours of here (Annapolis), so if you end up making it out to any of those series, odds are I'll be there. There should be a few other PA/NY/NE types that are out here who have already thrown out similar preliminary plans.

I'm hurting for my sports fix right now and am counting down the days until pitchers and catchers report. With the Bears not making the playoffs, the Bulls and Fighting Illini being terrible, and the Hollywood writers strike, this is the worst down period that I can ever remember. I think I may pop in the Kerry Wood 20 strikeout DVD tonight to help pass the time.

Why is everyone getting excited about the P's and C's reporting, typically fluff newspaper articles and 2 minute segments on the evening news isn't enough to ease the pain of no baseball. That's assuming you're not in Mesa for it, if you are, you have my envy.

I'm just speaking for myself, but I always geek out a lot whenever pictures start showing up. I don't care if they are of Kevin Hart and Henry Blanco playing catch. I just like seeing the Cubs unis.

Probably just because it's a tangible sign that the season is one step closer.

I've caught myself getting a little excited too, but then I stumbled into the game threads forum and caught the last few pages from game 3. I think I'm set until April now.

Same. That, and 3 second clips of our pitchers on the mounds during the news. Hearing the ball pop when it meets the mitt owns.

Last year we got the shaft with the early spring training pictures. Took forever to get Cubs stuff... Hopefully, with Fukudome on the team now, we'll get more stuff sooner.

I would imagine (read: hope greatly) that such will indeed be the case. If his introductory press conference was any indicator, the guy's going to have a decent-sized throng of media, American and Japanese, following him as he prepares for the season.

I am definitely jonesing for some baseball, specifically Cubs baseball.

I am waiting on the edge of my seat not only for the start of spring training but for the release of MLB 2K8. I lost my copy of MVP 2005 so I haven't been able to play anything worthwhile on the Wii for some time, since Wii baseball is pretty lame and from all I've heard about The Bigs (though I haven't played it) is NBA Jam : basketball, as The Bigs : baseball, and I'd much rather play something more realistic.

On another note, I work overnights for a cable sports network whose bread and butter is broadcasting Nat's and O's games. But right around now in the off-season, it gets slow and they really have to reach for programming, i.e. shows featuring fishing, golfing tips, hunting, college coaches' shows (gag) and other filler. We do a whole bunch of college basketball, but I hardly care about that. And we also will air ESPN news sometimes throughout the day, but that's become pretty [expletive] today (BREAKING NEWS: TOM BRADY JUST MADE A SANDWHICH!!!!!1)

We'll also be carrying the Caribbean World Series over Super Bowl weekend (as if anyone's watching, but hey it's baseball)

So anyhow, they air a lot of Classic Nats and O's games, so the other night during the dead time (infomercials from 3am-6am) I decided to get my Cubs fix by pulling up from the archives and screening the Nats/Cubs game from 7/3/05. Helluva game, but the Nat's completed a 3 game sweep at Wrigley on Scnieder's 12th inning HR, even after Rammy hit a two run bomb in the 9th to send it to extras.

But just seeing some of those faces made me SOOOOO much more optimistic about the 08 season, considering that Dusty, Hollandsworth, Hairston, Macias, Neifi, Burnitz....... all gone, and replaced by upgrades (well CF and SS may be shaky, but not likely any worse).

Let's get this season started already!

i always enjoy video clips of all the pitchers standing in line 10 deep behind the mound, each takes a turn and fakes a throw home, and jogs to fake cover first base.

You'll be disappointed to know Jacque is a Tiger now.
