Just read a story in a Iowa newspaper, revolving around Iowa Cub Fest and Pat Listach (new Icub manager) was quoted as saying that Sweet Lou is planning on retiring after next season. Is that true? Did he say that when he was first hired?

i hope not either...if that is the case you would think that hendry would do everything in his power to make a couple of more additions to this team so lou can have a viable shot at winning another WS

Why would he sign a 4 year deal if his intention was to retire halfway through?

He signed a three year deal. And this has him retiring after year 3 of it.

Yeah, this doesn't seem like anything new. I think by "Next season" they mean the 2009 season when his contract is up

Lou has always said that this was his last job. I don't think he's said that its 3 and done. Conceivably he could be here as long as the Cubs are winning and he wants to manage. If he somehow won a WS with the Cubs, I would imagine he would then retire and put the exclamation point on a hall of fame career. I think the reporter has read into his previous comments and Listach went along with the questioning or is hoping to time his chance to manage the Cubs in two years by managing in Iowa for 2 years.

I know many of you oppose this idea, but I see Ryne Sandberg managing the Cubs once Lou leaves.

I still don't think Sandberg is ready. Of course, if Lou stays for 2-3 more years after this one, then Sandberg might be ready.

I have little doubt Sandberg gets the nod after Lou's 4 years, whether he's ready or not. They won't be able to resist the PR, and it covers all the bases...if the Cubs fall off a cliff and get worse during Lou's time, Sandberg is seen as the hero coming in to right the ship. If they stay competitive or better, Sandberg is the hero coming in to keep things steady. Personally, I don't know how good a choice he'll be, but I think the organization is setting it up for him to step in after Lou.

If he continues to manage. I'd hate to see Cubs fans turn on him if he didn't work out though and I'm not a believer in the hometown guy coming back to play or manage thing. Pub wise it would be nice but it seems more often than not it comes back to burn both sides.

It's expected, you hire someone who's been in the game as long as Piniella and there's reasonable expectation you'll get a one term contract regardless of success.

I'm hoping Matt Walbeck becomes the next manager.

If the Cubs win the Series in the next 2 years, he'll retire for sure.

And what manager's job could he realistically find that would or could outdo taking a team with a 100 year WS drought and winning a World Series?

That's a dream job, right there. But, can he pull it off?

Once Hendry gets his extension, I'm not sure I see him going with Sandberg, either.

Not that I'd want him managing this team anytime soon, of course.

I couldn't stand the chants of "Sandberg Sucks" that would occur if Ryno were to be the manager.

It really wouldn't matter if the Cubs go 162-0 and 11-0 in the post season. Once things begin to go remotely south, he'll be trashed. It just happens.

Even P.K. Wrigley knew that he could'nt hire Ernie Banks as manager because the day would come that he would have to fire him.

I remember that. I think that discussion was when Ernie was mentioned as a possible replacement for Leo the Lip.

I imagine Lou's status moving forward has a rather large variable...the sale of the Cubs...who buys it and what they do with the team.

If the Cubs continue to get better I wonder who the next manager would be, Tremmell or Listach? I'd have to guess Alan if he were still in Chicago.

He may not be ready by that time, but Jody Davis is a genuine MLB manager prospect.

Yes, yes indeed. :D
