Soriano is going to leadoff.

Fukudome is probably hitting 2nd 3rd or 4th. He's probably more ideal for 2nd, but all the talk about breaking up the big right handers in the middle of the order, makes me think he will hit between Lee and Ramirez. If DeRosa starts he's probably 6th, with Soto and Pie behind him. Meaning Theriot may hit 2nd.

I'm guessing opening day looks like:

Soriano

Theriot

Lee

Fukudome

Ramirez

DeRosa

Soto

Pie

But the lineup will change early and often.

If I was to guess...

Soriano

Theriot

Lee

Ramirez

Fukudome

Derosa

Soto

Pie

My ideal lineup

Soriano

Fukudome

Ramirez

Lee

Derosa

Soto

Pie

Theriot/Cedeno

Swap Fukudome and Ramirez in the first lineup, and you've got the winner.

What I'd throw out there with waht we have now:

Fukudome

DeRosa

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

Soto

Pie

Cedeno/ Theriot

I'm hoping we can get Roberts and have something like this:

Roberts

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

DeRosa (playing SS)

Soto

Pie

The second lineup makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

In a perfect world...

1. Mark DeRosa (SS)

2. Kosuke Fukudome (RF)

3. Derrek Lee (1B)

4. Aramis Ramirez (3B)

5. Alfonso Soriano (2B)

6. Matt Murton (LF)

7. Geovany Soto ©

8. Felix Pie (CF)

=P~

Assuming no other additions...

If Pie wins the CF job and hits decently from the get-go, it's not out of the question that he could hit second.

I still believe Roberts will be acquired.

Soriano

Roberts

Lee

Ramirez

Fukudome

Soto

Pie

Theriot

We could do worse.

Why not:

Roberts

Soriano

Lee

Fukudome

Ramirez

Soto

Pie

Theriot

And have usually done so.

If the Cubs don't make anymore moves, I think Lou's lineup will be:

Soriano

Lee

Fukudome (Splits up the righties)

Ramirez

DeRosa

Soto

Theriot (Cedeno hopefully earns more time here)

Pie (Moves up if he starts hitting)

Ideally, I'd put DeRosa or Soto at leadoff, and move Soriano to 5th, but I don't see it happening. I could see Lou moving DeRosa or Theriot up to 2nd and taking everyone else down a spot for a more traditional lineup. Like last year, though, it will probably change a lot.

And just what do movies have to do with the lineup :D

I think the idea that, if Roberts is acquired, he should bat 2nd, is a very good one. People have this mental block about leadoff but what can't Roberts do in the 2nd spot that he could in the 1st spot? I'm a believer in catering to the whims of Mr. Soriano. He seems fragile, I could see the Cubs being stuck with an $18 million .810 OPS left fielder if he's moved around. My philosophy on this is, as long as he's doing his thing well let him be. My answer would probably be the same if we acquired 1981 era Rickey Henderson.

I'd rather have a .900 OPS strikeout crazed lower OBP leadoff man than an .800 OPS record-for-LOB-in-a-season middle of the order hitter.

If I'm in charge and L/R is a priority (for who knows what reason):

Kosuke

Ramirez

Soriano

Soto

DeRosa

Cedeno

There's still likely 3 holes in that lineup, with Theriot/Cedeno sure bets to not hit, Pie very likely won't hit, and Soto will probably not put up the numbers he put up in Aug/Sept.

Soto not putting up monster numbers is not the same thing as being a hole in the lineup.

.256/.318/.393 was the line NL catchers put up last year (AL was virtually identical). Catchers were a little better in 2006 and a little worse in 2005. The third best OPS from NL catchers were the San Diego guys who combined for .279/.349/.398, hardly impossible to reach. I think Soto is a fairly good bet to outperform that average. The backup portion of C is likely to underperform, but I think, combined, Cubs catchers should be able to outperform the average, and you can't really be described as a hole if you are better than average for your position. SS is a hole because it's bottom of the barrel, CF may be the same thing. C was in 2007, but shouldn't be in 2008.
