Shoot, for $12MM/year, give me a sure thing instead. I'll take Aaron Rowand.

Is Aaron Rowand really a sure thing in your opinion?

I'd guess he's a sure thing to produce slightly better results than Kaz Matsui then yes he's a sure thing.

wait we're still talking about the guy who had a .329 OBP and 93 OPS+ in 2005, and .321 OBP and 86 OPS+ in 2006, right?

Those are better than Kaz Matsui's or am I mistaken?

For the record I think Fuku's a much safer bet than Rowand. At worst the cubs get a Iwamura that's bad for twelve mill per but it's better than rowand.

Please explain to me the Fukudome-mania. I don't get it. There was talk that Prior could be moved for Josh Hamilton. You'll have to convince me that, assuming the Cubs acquire Brian Roberts, that a Hamilton/DeRosa platoon in RF couldn't equal (or better) Fukudome's likely production for a third of the money.

Fukudome doesn't run like Ichiro, so he doesn't even bring that to the table. Where's the rationale for $12MM/year-worth of excitement? Add in the risk that he's just as likely to be another Kaz Matsui as he is another Hideki Matsui, and I think it's a bad move on the Cubs' part.

I've seen the same rumors (about Hamilton), but I've seen stories since then shooting down that speculation. I guess we have to be careful about all of the "rumors" floating around and realize that probably 75% of them are false.

There are also reports that the Reds are very, very hesitant to trade Hamilton within the division. I doubt Prior comes anywhere close to the offer needed.

Bruce Miles debunked any interest in Hamilton.

Even if there was interest in Hamilton, getting him to platoon with Murton and signing Fukudome are not mutually exclusive(either can play CF).

Aaron Rowand is much less of a sure thing than Fukudome.

yes, and we've established matsui and fukudome are the same guy. i mean, they all look the same to me...they prolly play baseball the same.

Right now I expect that on Monday fukudome will decide he wants to play in the US. Then will take another week to decide which team. I just don't really see this ending in the next 24-72 hours. Of course if he already knows who he wants to play for that could all change real quick.

Fukudome is just sitting there watching teams duke it out with a big smile on his face. Can you blame him? He just watched Torii Hunter and Andrew Jones get ridiculous contracts for sucking. He might as well get his too.

And yet I could have made it through the weekend just fine without seeing this in a San Diego Union-Tribune article: "If [Kosuke] Fukudome chooses the Padres, he must adapt to an extreme pitcher's ballpark, yet will draw less scrutiny than he would in Chicago. Former Padres reliever Akinori Otsuka, who retained a San Diego residence after the club traded him to Texas, recommended the Padres to Fukudome."

I'm actually a little bit annoyed with this.

Yeah, I'm getting there too. It's not like this decision came out of nowhere. Fukudome has had months, if not years, to think about it. I'm all for him taking his time to field offers and choose the best one, but he at least must have made his mind up if he's going to play in the MLB next year.

More than that, I don't want Hendry to sit around and wait, just to have him either stay in Japan or sign with San Diego, and we end up with Jeromy Burnitz v3. I don't like that we're letting this one guy who can't make up his mind tie up other moves.

And for all we know, Ichiro put in a good word about Lou... It's annoying to hear that a player recommended another team but I don't think it will be the difference in the end.

this is my favorite quote regarding fukudome

"And when he hits it, I'm telling you, the ball stays hit."

As opposed to all those other players who, when they hit the ball, it eventually...becomes unhit?

I'm starting to think we should have taken a shot at one of young low risk/high reward OF's on the market this year....either Elijah Dukes or Milledge.

We can gamble in the OF with what we have(Pie and/or Murton) without giving up resources to do so.

We could have had Dukes for peanuts. If he ever gets his head togheter(good possibility he never will), he has a TON of upside.

The problem with Hendry, is he seems to forgot about his 2 best deals...Aram and D.Lee...both were young players, who at the time had not reached their full potential. Aram for various of reasons, and Lee was held back by a pitchers park.

I seen on another board that Someone on The Score reported that the Padres have dropped out of the race or were about to if he didnt decide in a day or two..Anyone hear anything about this?
