I think the Cubs can help the Orioles get a veteran to mentor their young pitchers so the O's don't have to sign Trachsel... they could trade for Jason Marquis. Seems like a win/win to me. :D

ESPN's Buster Olney:

I've heard that Andy MacPhail is very much in favor of the notion of dealing Roberts to the Cubs, for the right price.

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun quotes MacPhail as calling the Roberts situation a "logical question that will come next." Trading him now certainly fits into MacPhail's all-out rebuilding plan; he's their last valuable veteran commodity. Talks with the Cubs are expected to drag into spring as the teams decide which young pitchers and outfielders make sense, if any. Zrebiec cautions that the O's might keep Roberts for now and trade him in July, though.

Not getting Roberts in ST might be the best thing for the Cubs. I'd really like to see what Sean G. can bring to the table. If he's as good as his pops says (increase in velocity, better control of secondary) he may be an important piece for the 2008 Cubs to hang on to. I really have little faith in Lieber, Marquis, or Dempster. Maybe in a few months Roberts won't look so attractive to the Cubs.

Since the Birds are trading everyone might as well try to get Melvin Mora for the bench. Mora can still hit a little and can play SS, CF, 2B, LF, RF in a pinch if need be as well as third when Ramirez goes off for his month vacation, as usual. While we're at it we can try and pry away Daniel Cabrera from the Birds. They may be willing to let him go considering he is a free agent in two years. He's a guy that ought to transition well to the National League.

Of course the Birds may not be willing to move either of them, but it's worth exploring in the Roberts discussion.

Peace:

I just asked my source what are the chances of Roberts being traded he said "100%"

Take it for what its worth.

BTW, with Fogg we can forget about the Marquis thing i'm assuming.

This, down to every word. I'd like to see Sean get a shot this season and give Hendry to opportunity to fall in love with him. Right now, it's anyone's guess as to Sean's big-league value and while it could be as high now as it will ever be, it's worth the slight gamble on temporarily losing out on a Roberts trade.

So how many pitchers do the O's have to start? If they were looking to get a pitcher from us wouldn't that prevent them from signing a scrub like Fogg? Just wondering that maybe the deal on the table might be for more offensive talent or a pitcher not on the 40 man over our pitchers that we already have on the 40 man.

They wanted someone to mentor the young pitchers like Patton etc. They were looking at bringing back Trachsel. I'm not sure Fogg's the guy for that. I've never thought of him as a cerebral type and he's had a fairly pedestrian career. Trachsel's a very smart pitcher. He's going to be a major league pitching coach some day.

This is from Bigbird this afternoon. Somewhat contradicting the Olney report in front office moods.

Here's what I was told as of last evening:

For the most part the FO does not feel the Cubs are a great match a this time.

They like Gallagher alot and he will be included in any deal.

Any deal will most likely require Payton going to the Cubs.

Gallagher is really the only pitcher we would look to get for the Cubs. They Cubs are giving away Mutton and Cedeno for the most part. They would moist likely be included in any deal.

For the 4th piece we would be looking for a non 40 man roster player. Colvin is the guy we've wanted. After Reimold the minor league system is pretty weak concerning outfield prospects. We feel we already have over a dozen young pitchers in the system better than Veal who is projected to be a reliever by many.

No word on a 5th player.

Bottom line is if the Cubs would take a deal of Gallagher, Murton, Cedeno, and Colvin for Roberts and Payton there is a chance of it happening.

My guys personal opinion is Roberts remains an O and we try to extend him.

Read into this as little or as much as you want.

Trade overall seems believable. Would solve their problems of needing a top prospect and MI help. Solves our need for top of lineup help and a fall back plan if Pie doesn't cut it.

I think its a decent deal. We are probably giving up too much, but we would control Roberts for 2 years at a decent cost.

Just thought I'd pass along the rumor.

Eh.. i'd trust Peace alot more than BB. BB's guy seems to throw his own opinion in there, and Peace has been the one that's called the official things correctly in the past.

And that's what he thinks the Orioles want, not what they will get. If they are set on trading Roberts, I don't see how we're not in the drivers seat. Bruce has already said Colvin likely doesn't go.

If MacPhail really wants all that for Roberts, Hendry should walk away. The team as constructed is strong enough to keep us in contention until teams put players up on the market in mid summer.

i think the fact that no deal has happened in the 2 1/2 months since this thread started is evidence that Hendry won't trade just anyone for Roberts

Please no Gallagher.

Gallagher, Murton, Cedeno, and Colvin for Roberts and Payton? I'd do Marshall, Murton, Veal for those two.

I'd do the deal with just Marshall substituted for Gallagher. I'd think of doing the deal as is.

Yeah. If Marshall were subbed for Gallagher, I could live with the deal.

I agree, Peace seems more reliable than BigBird. So I would tend to be encouraged by him saying a deal is likely and Roberts has a 100% chance of being traded. Still is not a guarantee but I am encouraged.

Why is it we're so fired up ready to trade Cedeno? (Actually give him away as stated in the post you quoted) Who else can play SS if Theriot either A) royally sucks or B) gets injured. Not only are we thin at SS to begin with but with that deal we'd be even thinner.
