I usually try not to get caught up in random unsubstantiated message board rumors, but at this point, why the hell not?

I was told this evening that the Cubs have a 4 player deal on the table of Gallagher, Murton, Veal and Cedeno for Roberts. Also a signing of Josh Fogg could happen pretty quick.

 

Although I take no stock in this, just for argument's sake, that is way too I Dropped The Soap! much to give up for a player we don't need.

 

That'd be a horrific trade.

Sadly I would too. Although I'd love to have Cedeno around in case Theriot gets benched. Gallagher we already conceded would be gone in any trade. Veal I am not so high on anymore, and we get to keep Marshall so we don't have to rely on Dempster in the rotation.

Agreed. The the O's have Roberts for two yrs, and the Cubs still have DeRo for two yrs. Neither side has tremendous negotiating power. The Cubs should not give up 4 players for a luxury player.

I'm with UMFan and raw. I'd reluctantly do it at this point with the same rationale as UM. We're giving up more quantity, but at least we'd keep Pie, I guess. Hopefully, Hendry's other move up his sleeve is a good one.

The Cubs don't need a starting 2B, but they do need more good players. Brian Roberts is a good player. Cedeno and Veal are probably not gonna be as good as Roberts. Murton may someday be as good as Roberts, but probably not as good at his position as Roberts is compared to his position. Gallagher is the only potentially big loss, and it's pretty much a forgone conclusion he would be included in this trade.

I would assume that we would probably get Jay Payton as well, but even if we didn't then that's still a good trade for us. Murton and Cedeno have no where to go on this team, and who knows if Murton will ever develop power or if Cedeno will actually learn how to hit MLB pitching. I don't know much about Veal, but I heard he's good, but we need Roberts! It would make our top of the lineup so much better.
