Zambrano, Lily, and Hill are cemented in. Marquis and his contract probably are not going anywhere as well. Adios Sean Marshall.

I would say right now Zambrano and Lilly are the only ones that you can say are sure will be in the rotation next year. Hill or Marquis could easily still be traded. Marshall might be replaced or traded.

I wonder if this means the end of going after Kuroda.

Or leverage being used on Prior and Kuroda?

seriously...did anyone else hear this?

'Twould be true. I talked to both Hendry and Dempster about it. Ryan is excited about the resurgent Blackhawks, I might add.

Coming off a 3/15 deal, I'm sure he is excited. One year of mediocre starting could net him a $50m deal next offseason. I really have a hard time seeing this turn out well for the Cubs though. If they can turn around and get rid of Marquis, then I'm fine with it. But I fear Marquis and Dempster each racking up 200 lousy innings. And with what is likely to remain no better than an average offense, that's going to hurt.

it is truly amazing how far Marshall's stock fell within the organization in the last few months. He was basically benched in September and is now getting ridden out of town. amazing

I'm fairly certain Dempster to the rotation is something that has been a longtime in the making, and not something new that will mean the end of any other options. I think Dempster played the good soldier this year staying in the bullpen, even though he wanted to start, and give himself a chance to make a bunch more money next offseason. Any story like this can be used as leverage in negotiations with other starters, but unless they are negotiating against themselves, it won't matter for a guy like Kuroda. It probably makes them feel like they can justify letting Prior walk. But I can't see Mark being affected one way or the other by the news that Dempster may start. It could actually give them a good reason to convince Woody to take a lower guarantee with very high incentives for "games finished".

Still don't know if he was benched or experienced dead arm. His trade value would be the reason he'd be gotten rid of.

And I think a lot of us knew it was possible Dempster was headed to the rotation this season based on what Lou said after the failed Dempster-to-rotation/Gooz-to-closer situation during the season.

Yeah, the writing was clearly on the wall regarding this move.

I thought I remembered Dempster saying at some point in 2005 or 2006 that he absolutely loved closing. Not that I'm complaining if it means Marmol or a healthy Wood closes next year, but I'm sort of surprised to see how excited Dempster is about starting considering he is so mediocre/bad at it.

Wait... it's true that they're considering moving him to the rotation, or it's true that they've decided to move him to the rotation?

I want to go on record right now and say that putting Dempster back into the rotation is going to be a disaster.

so we're looking at Z/Lilly/Hill/Marquis/Dempster right now. That's craptacular

The problem is that Jim boy is banking on 19+ wins from Z and 15+ from Lilly, just like this year.

i'm not sure why, but this news doesn't bother me....he's going to walk a whole ass-load of people though...should be interesting.

I support it. Thus, you should support it.

Sell me on it. I'm open to being swayed.

Frees up Marshall to be traded with Murton for real OF/SS. We have righty bullpen depth (expecially if we resign Woody). Or, if Prior comes back and is useful. It kicks Marquis out of the rotation. Demp > Marquis you know. The hit to our bullpen would be minimal. It'd help our rotation. He's no less valuable as a starter than Marshall, but Marshall has a lot more trade value. Thus trade him on the market.

Ahhhhh.

I fully agree on him being easily replaced in the pen. I like Marquis not being in the rotation. I believe you've changed my mind.

What do we do with Marquis?

For someone with what appears to be so advanced statistical abilities how on earth can Meph say Demp to the rotation is a good idea. LOOK AT THE DARN STATS! Or better yet, do you Demp for starter people not remember the beginning of 03 before he went to the pen?

This is so mindbogglingly frustrating that anyone would think its a good idea. ](*,)

I loved Hendry's reasoning. He was an all-star so we know what he is capable of. Wasn't he an all-star 7-8 years ago?

I just heard the same thing on Comcast regarding Demp to the rotation. All I have to say is that moving Demp from the bullpen to the rotation is idiotic. Let's hope he gets traded but I doubt we're that lucky. On the bright side, when Lou and Jimmy boy realize how bad Dempster is as a starter they will eventually bench him.

From CS.com:

"We've talked to Dempster about starting," Hendry said Tuesday at the general managers meeting. "Lou [Piniella] talked to him at the end of the year about it. I think Dempster prefers to be a starter. We're talking about a guy who won 15 games as a starter and went to an All-Star Game in that role. We think he will be able to contribute to our rotation."

Talk about typical Hendry. Some of his logic is so skewed it's simply amazing that he's still in baseball.
