My daughter and her friends were "screaming" in the car, but did I hear Bruce Levine correctly: Ryan Dempster will be in the rotation next season? :-k

I support it. Thus, you should support it.

Sell me on it. I'm open to being swayed.

Frees up Marshall to be traded with Murton for real OF/SS. We have righty bullpen depth (expecially if we resign Woody). Or, if Prior comes back and is useful. It kicks Marquis out of the rotation. Demp > Marquis you know. The hit to our bullpen would be minimal. It'd help our rotation. He's no less valuable as a starter than Marshall, but Marshall has a lot more trade value. Thus trade him on the market.

Ahhhhh.

I fully agree on him being easily replaced in the pen. I like Marquis not being in the rotation. I believe you've changed my mind.

What do we do with Marquis?

Marshall can be traded anyways; we can put Gallagher in the rotation. And I'm not so sure Dempster is better than Marquis in the rotation

Dempster has almost 1000 innings as a starter with a 5 ERA and a 4.7 BB/9 that didn't really improve when he became a reliever. The conceptual idea of "use Marshall as a trading chip and replace the hole in the rotation from within" isn't a bad one, but I'd put Dempster behind Marmol, Gallagher, Prior, Hart, and maybe even Wood on the list of people used to fill that hole.

Here's how I look at it... if it puts Marmol in the closer role than why not?

If Dempster struggles, Lou won't leave him in the rotation.

I hope Marmol is either traded, goes to the rotation, or stays in his current role as a high leverage reliever.

Maybe it's more for putting Wood in the closer role.

How does Dempster to the rotation free up Marshall to be traded and Marquis out of the rotation? Marquis is going to be in the rotation. Dempster back to starting has disaster written all over. He's passable as a closer because more often than not he can get through 1 inning without giving up a run. But he'd be a terrible starter again.

Dempster as starter:

988 IP, 1031 H, 517 BB, 809 K, 1.56 WHIP, 4.99 ERA

Marquis as starter:

1015.2 IP, 1054 H, 389 BB, 600 K, 1.42 WHIP, 4.47 ERA

how can you say dempster is better than marquis?

i would rather see him in long relief or in someone else's clubhouse.

i actually think they may be the same pitcher...anyone seen them together?

That list of in house replacements might dwindle down pretty quickly.

Prior might not be back. Wood should be, but they may want to keep him relieving for one full year before looking at starting again. Gallagher may or may not be ready. Marmol and Hart might be options, but Dempster might make an acceptable placeholder.

Was this actually what was said? Has anyone heard anything else?

I know NSBB is not a place where speculation can get out of control or anything...

I think what he meant was that if Prior comes back, Dempster and Prior can replace Marshall and Marquis.

Are there trends or other stats that indicate Dempster's better than Marquis as a starter? If not, these look pretty bad for Demps.
