K-State is melting down against George Mason. Ed Hightower is making sure that there's a whistle every 30 seconds or so, and Bill Walker just freaked out and got himself T'ed up and fouled out in one fell swoop. From what I can gather, Beasley looks like a great player, but K-State is a pretty undisciplined team. Mason leads by 10 with 4 to play.

I can't believe people didn't see this coming (I don't mean you, and I don't mean necessarily against George Mason). K-State isn't going to be a top-25 team this year. Maybe if they still had Huggins.

Honestly, I was surprised when I saw them in the preseason Top 25. Of course, at that time I was still under the impression that Beasley was a 6-4 guard for some reason, but still. I think they sold their soul to keep that recruiting class, so to speak. I don't think Martin is up to the task of high-major college coach.

I agree completely. Martin will turn out to be a big mistake. Keeping together one recruiting class is never a sufficient reason to hire a coach. It's myopic.

You guys are nuts! Wait til Sutton gets here in 2 weeks and Hoskins is back.. Without Hoskins, we're missing a key piece of this team. He was 2nd team all Big 12 last year. He adds a whole new piece to this team. Sutton will be another HUGE freshman influence. Sutton, Hoskins, Beasley, and a decent night from Walker makes this a whole different team. What we started tonight was a bunch of inexperience. I don't disagree that Martin needs to be more vocal, but we're fine. I really am one that does think a loss for this young of a team this early in the year is good. Add in our missing pieces, and we're fine. I for one am thinking that keeping Martin to keep the recruiting class was a good move. You all may change your minds come January... We'll make freshmen mistakes and lose a few we shouldn't, but we'll also win some big games. Mark my word. That being said, I do miss Cartier Martin.

Hell.. look at what Martin has already layed out for 2009.. I know they haven't "signed" yet, but these commits are great to have this early...

Talent is only half the battle. I don't know much about Martin, perhaps he is a good coach. If not, you'll soon realize how little 4 stars means with no one to coach.

I'm not sticking up for Martin, but I do think he'll learn as this team will. It'll get better as the year goes on. I hope we start to see the Huggins in him soon. We're one week into the season, and having a player like Beasley doesn't ever hurt. He makes it look way too easy. We'll get to the tourney, especially if Hoskins does come back, which by the way does worry me from what I'm now hearing from my inside people. I'd change my tune a bit if Hoskins doesn't come back. That being said, if he doesn't we'll struggle until we gain an identity. Also if he doesn't, I'm happy we'd have him and Walker next year, as he'd likely get a medical redshirt, and there's no way Beasley is not in the NBA next year. Sutton will be big in a couple/3 weeks, and once, he gets going we'll be pretty good in January/Feb. I like Martin and his intensity, but if he can coach or not is yet to be seen. That being said though, I love the committments he's getting for the future.. If Hoskins doesn't come back, and Walker doesn't learn to play the 2 (I personally think he should be playin the 3), we may do less than I think this year. I don't ever hype this team as a top 10 team, but we'll be in the top 25 most of the year if what i'm thinking they can do is correct, and we learn some chemistry.

Not enough DUIs, dirty play, and non-graduation is KSU's problem?

SIU defeats Mississippi State 63-49 to move on to the final of the Anaheim Tournament. Another good game for Falker and another solid game defensively as we held a pretty decent team to under 50 points.

We play the winner of the USC/Miami-Ohio game on Sunday night.

horrible loss by Penn State today (to Rider). this team just cannot shoot. Geary Claxton got his (23 pts, 12 reb) but the team shot just 42% and shot just 11 free throws.

Kansas State snuck by UCF in overtime tonight.

A win in overtime against a horrible team is good for this team.

When WIU gives you a game you arent very good.

IU beats Illinois St 70-57. Will face Xavier tomorrow night.

Only a 13 point win? That seems like a pretty close game for them considering they were playing ISU.

Yeah, they weren't at their best tonight. Armon Bassett left early in the first half and didn't return, looked like an ankle.

If they don't play better tomorrow night Xavier will beat them.

It's hard to say. Projections have Illinois State anywhere between third and seventh in the tough Missouri Valley. This is one that probably can't be accurately judged until much later in the season when we see how good Illinois State really is, but all the buzz is that they are supposed to be much better than normal.

I knew ISU was supposed to be decent, but figured a talented IU could at least win by 20. Where was everybody else on offense for IU? Gordon scoring almost their points is nice and all, but not really something you want to see happen often, right?

Did you see the game? (I'm assuming not.)

I read with tremendous amusement all the Illinois fan griping about officiating the other day -- it might have been warranted, it might not have been. I didn't watch the game, and therefore didn't comment. This game was also marred by extremely poor officiating by the refs. They were very inconsistent and that hurt both teams, but probably impacted IU more. In the end, that inconsistency led to more foul calls than not since no one knew what would be called and what wouldn't be called (47 PF's were called in the game). In any case, IU dominated for a part of the first half, but played uneven and unspectacularly. Crawford, in particular, made a lot of bad decisions with the ball, forcing a lot of bad shots and playing into turnovers. Neither team shot well -- IU was 44.5% from the floor (outside of Gordon, IU shot 37.5% from the floor).

I thought ISU played very solid defense, were well-coached, and played a decent game. IU was the better team, and didn't play particularly well. Had they played well, it was a blow-out.

Finally, I'm tired of the IU/UI wars, which from my reading last year and this year. In my opinion, they are pretty much caused by UI fans virtually trolling pro-IU posts, but as an IU guy, I might be a bit biased. :) A little jawing here and there in a thread like this is fine, but the battles have really detracted from this thread in both years. From here on out, if you want to have an Indiana/Illinois battle, that's fine, but create a separate thread for it. Let's tamp things down a bit in this particular thread, however. Note: I'm not saying anyone's out of line or has broken the rules. I'm saying that if you want to have these battles, don't derail this particular thread to have them.

At this point in time, they don't play well without Bassett at all. If he misses tomorrow night I'm not sure they'll win. If they play like they did tonight I'm sure they'll lose.

ISU is projected to do better in the MVC, but I believe the MVC is projected to be down with Wichita and somebody else who's escaping me taking a pretty big hit this year. A 13 point win can win a lot of things depending on how it got to 13 in the end.

Creighton lost their two best players and Missouri State lost their best player without really improving either. The Valley isn't going to be that great this year.

I don't think most of us care anymore. I will again when we play, but besides that I could give two poops about IU. They are a good team coached by a joke of a man.

IU offense didn't show up at all. When Crawford, Bassett, or Gordon had the ball everyone stopped and watched. Stemler and Ellis don't move well without the ball. DJ and Dre were soft in getting post position. And whichever guard didn't have the ball just stood there.

Still a solid win. ISU is a decent team. Good defensively, can get scoring from a lot of different sources. Honestly, that was about what was to be expected from a team with all but 3 of their top 9 players taking their very first D1 shots outside of Bloomington. Figured they would struggle shooting, after spending the last 2 months in the same gym. Glad it was neutral, and not at the ISU campus.

Inside players are gonna have to step up in order to beat Xavier. I look for them to put bigger players on EJ to try and shut him down. I'd hate to see Bassett out, or more importantly, Crawford for 40 erratic minutes at the point.

Ball State uses their momentum from the Gtown game on Wednesday to blow a late lead and lose to freakin Evansville 51-50. Peyton Stovall had 22 points, but this team is handcuffed without Newell. 0-4 and now on a five-game road trip that will likely send this team back home 0-9.

IU doing what I was afraid they would do, laying an egg against Xavier. Down 11 at halftime, 40-29.

Curious how they will come out in the 2nd half.

Notre Dame with an unimpressive 12-point win over Youngstown State. They really will need to beat Kansas State on Dec. 4th for their OOC season not to be a complete washout.
