I wanted to start a thread about people's opinions on Fontenot's future with the big club. There are many that are much more knowledgeable than me on the minor leagues (I mainly just pick up stuff from the minor league forums), but I had been under the impression the last few years that Fontenot was the slightly better prospect. I may be remembering wrong.

I know he's not someone to rely on for production next year, but I'm bored and wanted to get people's thoughts on his future. He's put up the following lines in Iowa the last two years:

2006: 296/375/450 (111 games)

2007: 336/384/540 (55 games)

Thoughts?

I wouldn't go to the extremes Jeff does, but he should be competing for the 25th man and nothing else.

Bingo.

The whole "Geaux Cubs" thing needs to get back on the bench where they belong.

perfectly suitable bench player making the minimum

this is about how i see it. i'd like to see him be able to play some SS and maybe see him used as an end of the bench type player.

Why should Fontenot even be on the 25 man roster? Doesn't a utility man play more than one position? He plays second base and that's it. Unless you call that business he does out there at shortstop actual "fielding."

I think the standards of utility men must be really low for the Cubs. You either have to be versatile or you have to hit. Fontenot does neither. In fact, what does Fontenot do well at all? Basestealing isn't an asset. That one good month followed up 3 incompetent ones isn't exactly the hard sell.

There is no logical reason to keep Fontenot on the roster whatsoever. I'd rather take a gamble on a promising Rule 5 guy.

In fairness, Fontenot also can play 3rd but on a team that has Aramis Ramirez starting that also has DeRosa that's not really saying much. The Cubs would be better off with someone that could either play SS or had more power.

Ronny Cedeno.

Except he should be starting.

Agreed. Theriot is a great utility player (2b, SS, 3b, OF) but I am not sure if I want him in the lineup full time next year. Unless we can land ARod, Cedeno should get another chance at the SS job. If he stumbles again, we have Theriot's sub .700 OPS waiting for us on the bench. At least Ronny has some pop.

If Cedeno is seriously our best option @ SS next year, we're in deep trouble.

Compared to what we're getting from Theriot? I like the riot, but he just didn't bring his game consistently this year. He had a great month when we were hot, and he was definitely a spark then.

If Soriano continues to lead off, DeRosa should be hitting 2nd, not 5th/6th. That's why we need to figure out a decent option for RF who can hit in the middle of the order. Cedeno will not hurt us hitting 8th behing Soto.

I think the consensus is that neither are good enough, and that we need to go outside the system for a SS. But if it comes down to Theriot vs. Cedeno, I'd go with Ronny. Ryan was just awful for the last 2 months of the season.

Oh I'm fine with the idea of getting a better SS than Ronny/Ryan...but I'd rather have Ronny in there. He has more potential at least. He's got better tools I guess. And he's younger, and more productive at AAA.

Yeah, I didn't mean compared to Theriot -- I mean we better find something better, SS was a hole this year.
