For me:

My grandfather, without him I would've just been a football fan.

For everyone:

Isn't a fanbase more deserving than Cubs.

As a Cubs fan, it would be great, but there are far bigger fans than me.

for all of the cub fans in the world

for all of the cub bashers in the world

basically....just win baby!

just win and the angels will sing from the heavens because it will be a gloriously beautiful day if that ever happens

1. Ron Santo - the only superfan that is allowed to provide professional radio analysis.

2. Kerry Wood - Gave up his arm - twice - to try to get the Cubs through the playoffs in '98 and '03.

3. Everyone who has stuck with this team, through generations, over the past 98 years.

I forgot one:

For every national sports announcer that can't let a Cubs game go by without dropping a goat/Bartman/1908 reference, and can't let a foul ball down the third base line go by without mentioning Bartman. Screw you.

1. My Dad 1946-1981 and all the other Cub fans who are gone.

2. Me- Grandpa said I was defending the Cubs as soon as I could talk.

3. All Cub fans worldwide, especially Ron Santo.

4. All Cub haters worldwide.

5. All 329 Florida Marlin fans.

1) My mom. She grew up with the Cubs and still enjoys them. Granted, she has a very negative point of view on their chances of success, but she'd watch games with me and would always be there to commiserate with after the latest Cubs disaster. For once, I'd like to have a Cubs conversation with her that isn't some variation of "It's the Cubs; what do you expect?"

2) My sister. She is much the same as my mother, although she is much more into them than my mom. Her worldview is that the Cubs exist for the sole purpose of making people humble.

3) My friend Luis, solely for the reason that I'd be able to call him up at any point during the day and have the following conversation with him:

Me: "Guess what?"

Luis: "What?"

Me: "The Cubs won the World Series!!!!!!"

Luis: "I KNOW!!!! IT'S SO AWESOME!!!"

4) Ron Santo, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Sammy Sosa, Fergie Jenkins, and all of the other former Cubs who never got to celebrate a World Series victory with the Cubs, much less make it to the World Series.

5) All of the idiots in the media who won't shut up about curses, lovable losers, and all of the other mindless crap that we've had to endure for our lifetimes. In particular, I'd love to see this team wipe the smirk off the faces of Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, and Joe Morgan.

6) All of the Cubs greats who have passed on. I'd love to think about how Harry Caray would be celebrating the Cubs winning the NL Central this year. Jack Brickhouse, too.

7) All of the Cubs fans who have lived and died with this team through the times of abject horror and misery to the times of ecstasy and joy. It's about time we get our due.

8) All of the obnoxious fans of other teams who will mindlessly defer to arguments involving goats, curses, and 1908 when the topic of the Cubs is brought up. I'd love to see the Cubs make them choke on their crow.

9) Me. Just because. :D

3) My mom, who jumped off the Cubs bandwagon this year and started cheering for the Brewers cause she didn't know any of the Cubs anymore

4) My wife, who is Brazilian and claims noone would party like Brazilians after a World Cup win

5) Brickhouse, Hary, and Stone

6) Me (but I guess I'm already included in 2)

First and foremost, for my grandma, who died a couple of weeks ago. She was 96 and had not seen a Cubs World Series title. Add to that she married a Cards fan.

After that, for Harry, Fergie, Ron, Ernie ( and the rest of the 69-72 Cubs), all of the fans who lived through 84, and for my kids, so they can actually believe there's something there to cheer for.

If the Cubs were to win it all, in my senior year of college, on my 21st birthday, that would top everything that could possibly happen in my entire life.

..a spectacular evening it would be for sure, but there are worlds other than this one, gunslinger.

My grandfather and I spent many afternoons bitching and moaning about the Cubs and it always bugged me that we never got to watch a WS together and he had never seen the Cubs win one before he died. He was such a big fan that we all dressed in his Cubs gear and sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" at his funeral (he had 11 children, 28 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and all but 3 were there).

My Dad, my Grandmas, my Grandpas -- all the old timers who sat by their TVs watching Brickhouse and Caray over the years with nothing but disappointment to show for it.

And me, dammit. I deserve it. All of you do, too.

i'd rather they win it for Bartman than for Santo. Santo was partly to blame for the 1969 collapse, whereas Bartman's life has been ruined for something that was really meaningless to anyone but a cry baby Moises Alou and the national sports media

Wow, that was a thoughtful gesture of you Derwood. I don't care what people say about you, you do have a heart. so, I'll second it.

Well for me...duh.

But also for Kerry Wood. That guy has deserved better than the injury gods have given him.

+1

Great posts in this thread.

Like many others I'd love to see the Cubs win it for a family member: in my case my older brother, who passed away two years ago. The greatest Cub fan I ever knew, and I miss him very much.

Me. Damn it, this is the last year of my life that I won't have to be working for a living, and my 21st birthday next month just happens to coincide with Game 4 of the World Series. If the Cubs were to win it all, in my senior year of college, on my 21st birthday, that would top everything that could possibly happen in my entire life. Make it happen. I beg you.

Oh god, that would be one incredible night.

And the rest of his life would be all downhill and spent talking about that one night.

How about, it would be the best thing so far and would be the sub basement of events from then on out.

Now that would be a life, not just a night!

That's me to a T. My grandfather was also a huge Cub fan for all 86 years of his life only to never see them win. I went to his house with some Old Style to watch Game 5 of the NCLS in 2003 hoping to celebrate with him. Of course, that did not happen and we all know the rest of that story. My heart absolutely broke for him after that series. I knew he didn't have much longer in this world and he passed away a couple of years ago. It still hurts to think about the memories we could have had watching the World Series together. Let's do this one for you, grandpa!

For all the Cub Heroes . .

Hornsby, Cavaretta, Harnett, Sauer, Banks, Dawson, Sandberg and Sosa.

and for the Cubs that became "goats" . .

Don Young, Billy Buckner, Leon Durham and Donnie Moore.

and for the guy who built the bleachers and scoreboard, planted the ivy and loved sitting in the bleachers with the fans on a hot sunny day enjoying a cold beer - Bill Veeck.
