Anyways, yesterday was 03 talk, today 04. Gonna stop before the bad vibes move in.

So we'll talk 05 tomorrow and 06 on Friday, then. Excellent. Friday should be fun.

I'll spare us the trouble and say everything there is to be said about 06: Barrett hit a game-winning grand slam against the Cardinals in April, and the Cubs lost every single game after that for the rest of the season.

07: Cubs win 10 of 13 going into the last give games, have two game division lead, learn to finally beat the Marlins, face Reds who are without Dunn and Griffey.

There is no comparison with 2004.

We had a 1.5 game lead with 10 games to play in 2004, so far from a lock I can't even understand where peoples expectations came from. We obviously should have been the favorite but you also have to expect the potential for a letdown. The wildcard, by its nature, is always more competitive than most division races. Look at the wildcard this year, there are still 3 teams very much in it.

We have a 3 game lead with 6 to play. (Now its 2 games with 5 to play) If we collapse here it would be the worst collapse of all time.

Now if we avoid Steve Trachsel (and Piniella has hinted at so much) then I have hope we can avoid that disaster.

Wasn't it 7 games left?

The Astros also won their last 7 games that season.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot about that.

Pretty sure that's not true...I went to Atlanta to one of the games and I think the Braves beat them at least once...(checked schedule...they lost 2 of 3 to Atlanta)

The Cubs won the division in 1908 with both NY and Pitt finishing only a game behind them. I haven't been able to find the schedule, but I'm sure they performed well in crunch time.

Much better than Fred Merkle did, anyway. :D

My bad...I thought you guys were talking about Houston 06...they won 9 in a row to get almost tied with STL, then lost 2 of 3 in Atlanta to end the season and miss out on the playoffs.

The 1908 Cubs were 59-46 after August 18 of that year. They finished 99-55. That's correct, they went 40-9 to end the year and didn't have a single 2 game losing streak in that time.

Not to jinx anything but I'm hoping this is Marquis' "Estes Game".

I was just thinking that this Morning! That would be sweet.

That context makes the Merkle play that much more ridiculous. What a finish.

I don't understand the comparison at all. Estes had a 74 ERA+ with the Cubs (lower before his final game) and hadn't had a quality start since August 8th before his great start to end his year. Meanwhile Marquis has a 105 ERA+ and has had 3 quality starts out of 5 in September. There is simply no basis for comparison between the two.

Marquis hasn't been anywhere near bad enough to qualify for the possibility of an Estes game.

Who was the last Cub to pitch a complete game shutout?

You're reading too much into it. All he's saying is that he hopes Marquis can pitch a gem like Estes did in 2003. Both of them weren't highly thought of all year long, only to pitch a gem when we really needed it toward the end of the season.

Estes wasn't highly thought of for a reason.

Marquis hasn't been highly thought of because everyone for the most part ripped his signing and are unwilling to admit he hasn't been that bad.

I think that is the point he's trying to make.

So we'll just hopefully call it the "Marquis Game" and be done with it.

Marquis was good in April and May. He's been very un-good since.

Point is though, he's till been twice the pitcher than Estes was in 03.

He was very good in April and May, terrible in June and July (and the first start of August) and then slightly above average since then. 4.27 ERA in his last 9 starts.
