You know, if the Brewers get to one game back tonight, it's pretty damn realistic that they'll take the division outright. The Padres are faltering, so it's compltely within the realm of possibilities that the Padres take all four games against them. If we were to win the final game of the Florida series and then 2 of 3 against Cincinnati, that wouldn't get it done.

Everybody needs to stop freaking out. If I gave you the choice four days ago that the Cubs would take 3 out of 4 from the upcoming four lefties, I guarantee you everybody here would take that.

Exactly....we're 6-2 over our last 8 games...not a Cub fan on earth that wouldn't have said "I'll take that" 8 games ago.

Glad to see the Pads comeback win last night. I just hope the Phils can keep em close enough to keep them needing to fight. Peavy, Young, and Maddux are sure things for the Brewers.

Pads still have the Rockies to worry about as well who, along with the Phillies, are one game back in the wild-card. It's likely that the Pads-Brewers series will matter for both teams.

Not freaking out, but things do change rather drastically if the Crew gets to only 1 game back.

Hehe.

We need to put in a phone call to the Cubs: "umm, now would be a good time to start winning."

I just think the Cubs need to win tonight to prove they aren't entering Choke City. Its not hard to see why a loss to the Marlins would make Cub fans freak out...for multiple reasons.

I really dont see us not winning at least 3 more.

It's statements like these that make the fates say "Oh yeah? Watch this!"

1984 I can't see us not winning 1 more?

2003 I can't see us not winning 1 more?

2007 I can't see us not winning 3 more?

Don't temp fate. EVER!

There is no comparison with 2004.

We had a 1.5 game lead with 10 games to play in 2004, so far from a lock I can't even understand where peoples expectations came from. We obviously should have been the favorite but you also have to expect the potential for a letdown. The wildcard, by its nature, is always more competitive than most division races. Look at the wildcard this year, there are still 3 teams very much in it.

We have a 3 game lead with 6 to play. (Now its 2 games with 5 to play) If we collapse here it would be the worst collapse of all time.

Now if we avoid Steve Trachsel (and Piniella has hinted at so much) then I have hope we can avoid that disaster.

Exactly. I'm not freaking out. We just really need to win tonight (and I think we will). I also have a feeling the Cards will sneak away with a win.

Also...

Wasn't it 7 games left?

Whichever, its still not much of a lead compared to a 3.5 with 6/7 to go.

I don't know, three game lead, need one to win the series and tanking the next 4, that might be a hard collapse to beat. (see Red Sox v Yankees)

It was 1.5 with 9 games left. We lost the last 2 to the Mets, 3/4 to the Reds and the first 2 to the Braves. We also had a 1 game lead with as little as 6 games left.

The reason it was such a huge collapse is because we were playing bad teams like the Mets and Reds (at home) and the Braves, who already had a playoff spot locked up. We assumed that the Cubs would just steamroll those guys with our clearly talented team.

One thing that certainly sucked is that the Braves had it out for us for beating them in the NLDS last year and took pleasure in knocking us out.

What we also didn't count on is the Astros, who were 2.5 games behind us with 9 to play would win out and make the playoffs. That is why this current situation worries me.

Anyways, yesterday was 03 talk, today 04. Gonna stop before the bad vibes move in.

Honestly, I don't see why it matters that it was a 3.5 game lead with 6/7 to go. Fact is, it's a 2 game lead with 5 to go. It's still a pretty big number, but what it was at the start of the week has no bearing on the Crew's chances.

After tonight the magic number could be 1 game. Do your part Cubs.

Unless there's some kind of scenario I'm completely unaware of, the magic number could only go to 2 after tonight.

Sorry I thought the magic number was 3.

Ok, 2. Cubs do your part.

That scenario would be that the Cubs and their awesomeness are awarded two wins, just for being awesome. Brewers in turn forfeit in the midst of their own tears, despite having a 13-1 lead in the fifth inning against the Cardinals. In that case, the magic number would be 1. Otherwise you're right.

So we'll talk 05 tomorrow and 06 on Friday, then. Excellent. Friday should be fun.
