But really, this whole thing reeks of a Boras ploy to drive ARod's price up.

Exactly. It's a false rumor leaked by someone connected to Boras. He's done it a hundred times to manipulate the value of his clients.

Sounds like a wild rumor.

I do find it interesting that 6 months ago Yanks fans would have been cheering this. Haha, hilarious.

The richest team in baseball has a $30M headstart in this race, and every incentive to pay through the nose to keep their most important player.

ARod isn't going anywhere unless he's willing to take less to get out of NYC. I'm extremely skeptical about that.

The Yankees lose the Texas money if he hits free agency. They'd have to extend him, and whatever they spend costs them another however many cents on the dollar thanks to them being over the luxury tax threshold. At least that's how I understand it.

how can this be tampering if the guy doenst even own a team?

There's apparently a specific rule against players owning a team, or negotiating future ownership.

And even if there wasn't, MLB would be pretty pissed at a future owner that did that, and may not approve ownership.

Its technically not, but it shows complete disregard for the rules that the actual owners must go by. I don't think the other owners in baseball would think to highly of this.

I just hope that ARod has a horrible playoffs. That will get him out of NY for good.

Oh man, that's so true. They'd chase him out of town.

Why would ARod choose Chicago over New York?

1. Can return to SS

2. Gets to play for Lou once again

3. Will play for a contender

4. Gets to trade NY fans for Chicago fans

5. Will still get paid nicely

I think the guy has legitimate reasons to come play for the Cubs. Believe it or not money may not be the most important thing in this guys life right now. I think if I've made boat loads of cash and am currently in a situation that is less than fun for me I'm looking for something better even if it does involve less money.

I don't believe it matters. If the Yankees lose it will be Arod's fault regardless of how well he does.

I'm rooting for him to go 1-12 and have the Yankees get swept in 3 games so I can read a few inevitable articles by NY sportswriters saying that ARod's regular season doesn't matter because he couldn't come through in the playoffs.

I think if we gave him $20 million and part ownership of the team he'd bite. Steinbrenner won't give him part of the Yankees.

It's not happening. It can't. No point in even mentioning it anymore. Irresponsible journalism by whoever reported it.

If he put up 50+ homers and 130+ RBI for the Cubs next year, Cub fans would elect the guy mayor and name a street after him. He'd be king of the city.

I can guarantee he wouldn't get booed unless he started April and May hitting less than .200 and threw a fit about it in the papers.

Yeah, I didn't read ahead in the thread. My bad.

Well, those numbers worked for Sammy for a few years before the majority of Cubs fans turned on him. He also had a shoddy reputation as a team player for the bulk of his time.

I have a hard time believing that A-Rod would get such preferential treatment by putting up those numbers.

If he brings us a World Series championship though, he'll be Mr. Cub for a whole new generation.

This true, he could heat up and put up numbers that are way above even his career norms and it would still be his fault according to NY media, but if he slumps and hits below .300 with only 1 or 2 HR in another first round exit, he would go from being merely a scapegoat to lynched in a witch hunt. The worse his numbers in the playoffs, the louder the clamoring for his head will be.

We blame everything on CT; Yankee fans blame everything on Arod. :D

I don't know about you, but I blame everything on Jim Hendry, solely.

BTW, I'd love to have A-rod on the Cubs if he could play SS again.

You've got your facts straight.

The Yanks will submit an extension offer well in advance of ARod's opt-out date, so if he chooses to stay, he'll never hit free agency and the Texas $$$ will remain in play. I believe the Yanks when they say that once ARod opts out, they'll be out of the bidding. They basically have to be, because their best offer goes down by $30M the second he opts out.

The luxury tax issue is mitigated by all the expiring contracts the Yankees have coming off of the books, and the fact that they wouldn't feel the full brunt of the extension for three years (while the original TEX contract is still in effect). The Yanks could very easily re-up ARod without upping their payroll, or their luxury tax exposure.

I can certainly see that perspective. I'm just skeptical it applies.

BTW, I'm not convinced that ARod dislikes being a Yankee in the first place. In fact I suspect he enjoys all of the attention and all of the drama, actually.

You're missing a BIG difference. In our case, it really is CT's fault.

If he hits 50+ HRs and has an OPS of 1.000, I don't care if he can only field balls hit within 3' of where he's standing, I'd still put him at SS. Theriot's fine and all if he can be on base around a .350 clip, but he's been pretty bad offensively for long stretches. He may not be a defensive disaster, but he's not Ozzie Smith out there either.

Point is, why qualify it? Even if ARod's defense at SS would be subpar, who really cares?

Depends on cost to me. If we can get a legitimate RF at a reasonable cost, then I go that way. Put Pie in CF and let Jones be a backup at all the positions (I think we have him for one more year).

Otherwise, I'd consider moving Theriot to 2B if we got A-Rod and putting DeRosa in RF. While his arm wouldn't be great, I think DeRosa has shown he can play anywhere.
