think he can still play SS?

Who cares. Have you seen his offensive numbers pretty much his whole career? He can play SS on a unicycle for all I care. Just get him to Chicago.

Can he still play SS?

Could you imagine the Cubs outbidding the Yankees for a player. I would pee myself.

The Yankees have said if he opts out, they're done with him.

They've said they would not enter a bidding war, not that I trust much coming out of NY (Scarlett Johanson and Natalie Portman excluded, of course), including the A-rod rumor.

I could see Boston, LAA and the Dodgers getting in the mix, White Sox as a dark horse (who knows) and Omar Minaya possibly seizing if he found some way to throw the Mets' hat into the ring. I think Boras would use Cubs more as rumor mill fodder, teasing Cubdom nationwide.

I don't see the mets getting involved in this one. If he does opt out I think he choices would be limited to both LA clubs the Cubs and the Red Sox.

1. Soriano - 7

2. DeRosa - 4

3. Rodriguez - 6

4. Ramirez - 5

5. Lee - 3

6. Soto - 2

7. Jones/Floyd/Murton/Other - 9

8. Pie - 8

Stacked

If that's my team, I'd bat Lee 2nd, Soto 5th and DeRosa 6th. For your RF, there's no way Floyd is back, and Jones should get dumped, too. I'm hoping for a Marshall, Murton, Veal and Patterson trade for Miggy Cabrera to round out that lineup there, but that's just me. ;-) I'd put him 5th and move Soto and DeRo down a spot.

Seriously, the Fish are in awful shape (again), Cabrera could get moved this winter in the right deal. I want in on that, he is criminally underrated because of toiling in Miami. Given his age, I might even want him more than A-Rod.

Mets going to play him at 2nd?

I dont see the Yankees just letting him go if he opts out. I think that is just them postering.

Really doubt the Mets will get into it, hence the crack about Minaya. I doubt he'd move to LF, which is really the only place the Mets could put him.

I think the Yankees would force A-rod to make a choice, i.e., make a deadline, and not drag out any offer they extend to him. Yankee pride.

the post about Arod playing SS on a unicycle was classic! As far as adding a 150+ RBI guy batting .300+ with God knows how many HR's and SB's...it would cause me to go into a seizure and possibly even die. that would be the most stacked lineup ive ever seen.

Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, and Rodriguez.

Arod will have massive numbers another 5 seasons. i dont care what it takes, i just want a world series. if the cubs won the world series i'd get a picture of ronnie woo-woo smoking crack on my back. hell, id smoke crack with ronnie woo woo for all i care.

I think I'd rather go for Hermida than Miggy unless he's going to be happy with a move back to RF. Plus Hermida would give at least one lefty bat in the lineup.

Not that FLA will trade either one of them anytime soon.

Pitchers would be afraid to take the mound against the Cubs.

But really, this whole thing reeks of a Boras ploy to drive ARod's price up.

Heck, I'd be afraid to sit in the bleachers!

If the new owners are going to fork over $1B for the team, what's another $300M?

I think the goat and Bartman would implode if A-Rod joins the Cubs!

If this happens I will pee myself with glee.

Oh please let it happen!!!!

I don't know.... 30 million a year?

I'm all for giving him a chunk of the team, but that salary at that age for that long....yikes.

I don't understand the problem with overpaying players if you have the money. If it doesn't hurt economically there is nothing wrong with it.

The Yahoo sports article says that players aren't allowed to be part owners. This story sounds false to me.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=txyankeesrodriguez&prov=st&type=lgns

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the proposed deal in the article would give A-Rod the option to become a part owner after the deal's conclusion, erasing any conflict about player-owner.

read the article:

A player can neither have part ownership of a team nor negotiate for future ownership.

I have heard of players getting a % of the concessions, though I am not sure if its true or not.

But this rumor is crap. First off the NY Post is pretty much a tabloid at this point and they have to resort to stuff like this to get people to read it. Secondly, if this rumor did come from Boras as the article suggests, it merely illustrates how cunning he is as an agent. It wouldnt be the first time he has manipulated the media.

The richest team in baseball has a $30M headstart in this race, and every incentive to pay through the nose to keep their most important player.

ARod isn't going anywhere unless he's willing to take less to get out of NYC. I'm extremely skeptical about that.

Not to mention the potential said owner would really be killing his chances of ever getting the team if he did say this or even really talk to Boras to begin with. I would like to think all of the bidders are smarter than this.

Hey Chicago, get ready to feel the whinny NYC/Yank fan Wraith.

You can't feel a wraith. They're not tangible.

Financially, the fish are a mess, but talentwise, they're dangerous. 6 out of 8 position players OPS over .800. None are over 28. The only reason they're not competitive now is because the pitching is awful. Their two best young pitchers missed pretty much the whole season, and Dontrelle was useless. Nobody on that team makes anything aside from Cabrera and Willis. I think they give it a shot and bump payroll for one year, because with that amount of young talent, they're very close to being competitive.

I'm sure the rumor isn't concrete or real as printed, but there are a lot of factors that could hypothetically put ARod in Chicago if he opts out. If it somehow worked out that way, there'd be no excuse whatsoever not to play Murton, Pie, and Soto every day next season.

That's exactly why they SHOULD trade Miggy. They would still have a potent offense, and Cabrera could fetch a #1 starter + two very good prospects.
