Otherwise, I'd consider moving Theriot to 2B if we got A-Rod and putting DeRosa in RF. While his arm wouldn't be great, I think DeRosa has shown he can play anywhere.

Ken Rosenthal weighs in with why A-Rod won't be a Cub next season:

A-Rod must decide whether to opt out of his Yankees' contract within 10 days of the conclusion of the World Series, well before the Cubs' next owner is likely to be determined.

Even if the selection process were accelerated, it is doubtful that Major League Baseball would approve any group that might — as its first act — establish an industry standard with Rodriguez.

The Cubs already have four players signed to massive contract through at least 2010 — first baseman Derrek Lee, third baseman Aramis Ramirez, left fielder Alfonso Soriano and right-hander Carlos Zambrano.

Rodriguez, 32, would need to return to shortstop — a position he hasn't played regularly since 2003 — for as long as the Cubs kept Ramirez, who holds a full no-trade clause through '10 and is signed through '11.

I'd hate to have him play SS Ken, that would suck.

His main reasoning besides is ARod might be rusty playing SS, a spot where he was one of the greatest of all time?

Jeeeeeeeezum Crow. Wait to see the big picture, slick.

Yes, bumping Murton to keep Theriot in the lineup at 2B is a very bad idea.

Thank you. I know it's an insignificant detail, given the impossibility of signing Rodriguez, but whenever people suggest moving Theriot to 2B, where his value is minimized, in order to keep Murton, who is a decent hitter, out of the lineup, I cringe. It's just such a bad idea.

And Murton's been on absolute fire the last 2 months, posting an OPS of .920 and .948, respectively. Meanwhile, Theriot has sucked (.668 and .561) in each of the last 2 months, with an OBP barely above .300. But people are striving to keep Theriot (who will be 28 at the end of Dec) in the lineup over Murton (who turns 26 next month).

Theriot's defense is not great enough to justify his bat in the lineup at 2B and probably not even SS. Those number aren't much better than Cedeno's last year (when he was just 23) and people were calling for Ronny's head. Theriot had a great month or so earlier in the year when we were struggling and those stats are keeping his season stats up, but he's killing us the last 2 months.
