Here's the list of every Cub I can think of who has performed better than I would've thought:

Theriot

Fontenot

Ward

Soto

Marquis

(to some extent) R. Hill

(to some extent) Marshall

Kendall

Dempster

Marmol

mark derosa should be there too.

.297/.376/.423

he had a career year at 31, and is now doing even better at 32.

That's a good point, I forgot about him. Couldn't have forecasted his 2007.

Over at brewerfan.net, brewcrewin07 is a riot.

He's got the "lucky Cubs" schtick down to an art form.

A few of his contributions...

It wouldn't bother me so much if they lost the division....but to the Cubs?? That's what hurts the most. The freaking mediocre talented Cubs. The horseshoe up their arses since September started Cubs. The no HR hitting all season but have hit 36 in 22 days in September Cubs. Yes, those incredibly LUCKY Cubs.

t's not like the Cubs deserve to win the division. Sad thing is, they didn't Earn it, they have had more lucky breaks then any team in recent memory. I am fully confident this has PO'd the baseball gods, and they will pay for it in the playoffs, and it will be absolutely the most beautiful thing in the world. Go ahead, make the playoffs Cubs. A lot of good it will do you when you lose the first series and get to go home with everyone else anyway. Was it really worth it Cubs fans??

uhh, yes. I for one am quite comfortable risking the wrath of the "baseball gods" you actually seem to believe in.

And here I was thinking that believing in one god was semi-ludicrous, but to learn that some people believe in multiple 'baseball' gods? Incredible.

A veritable pantheon, probably. All hell-bent on smiting the Brewers by proxy though their endowment of incredible luck on the Cubs and their fans.

Don't paint us all like that. I've been frustrated following the Cubs, thinking some guys are over-performing, and yes, even lucky lately, but the guy you mention is just spilling sour grapes right now.

Most of it is resentment and frustration because if a couple of players (Capuano, Hall, any reliever not named Cordero) had even played like AAA-caliber players, we could have had this division sewn up.

Most of us like most of you just fine. You're good people, with the minor flaw of being Cub fans (joke, joke).

(One note of just being crotchety and argumentative, Soriano, Ramirez and Lee are all performing above career average in OPS, and Ramirez and Soriano are a stone's throw from career highs)

I really dont mind most of the posts over there, but give it a break with the scrubs stuff. You're the freaking brewers.

After the past couple weeks, yeah. Soriano has had three months this season where his OPS was right at .700 or lower. Prior to this month, Ramirez was on pace for his lowest OPS in four seasons. Lee's OPS is about where you'd expect, but his run production is down, and his power is just starting to come. Jones' OPS is .070 lower than his career average. Floyd's OPS is about .060 below his career average.

And only a hot September has brought all these numbers up to where they are now.

Yeah, it's amazing what good six weeks in April and May can do to some people.

I like the Brewer team, but the level of gloating from their fans in the first two months of the season makes these events put a big smile on my face.

And as someone said, somebody stating how lucky the Cubs are is laughable.

This is really the only thing that annoys me about the Brewers' fan perception:

I don't know how anyone could cheer for the Cubs. They went Yankees and spent 300 million this offseason. The last thing baseball needs is another team buying titles.

Facts: 2007 MLB Payrolls

Cubs 2007 payroll: $99,937,000

Cubs 2006 payroll: $94,841,167

Increase in payroll: About 5 million

Brewers 2007 payroll: $71,986,500

Brewers 2006 payroll: $56,790,000

Increase in payroll: About 15 million

The Cubs are not spending like the Yankees. They were actually in the bottom half of the league in payroll increase in the past year. They did not increase payroll by 300 million in the offseason. Yes, they will spend about 300 million over the next 7 years on the free agents they acquired.

EDIT: It appears that at its core level, the problem the Brewer fans have with the Cubs is the same problem that the White Sox fans have with the Cubs. Having to compete with the Cubs for fanbase, and being heavily outnumbered, even at home games.

Cardinals fans would not, and have not said this kind of crap, ever. Brewers fans should be embarrassed and ashamed by their attitudes.

Gotta disagree. For every reasonable Card fan poster like the Wolfman or the Faceman there are about ten Gateway Snakes.

Spoken like an un-true Cardinals fan. In fact, you're all un-true Cardinals fans if you find yourself rooting for or enjoying the Cubs doing anything besides choking. Never, in the history of being a sports fan, has it been OK to root for the rival team.

And I DO hate the Cubs, their fans are just a part of it. I hate their ugly jerseys, that Civil War relic they call Wrigley Field, the ivy on the walls, Carlos Zambrano, that they are deemed "lovable." They are a canker sore and they pop up once every few years and it's painful.

Of course there's nothing written that says you have to hate everyone but your own team. I think you're reading too much into what I'm saying when a lot of it is half in jest. But what makes sports so effing great is passionately rooting against the canker sores.

I cannot wait for the last week/postseason collapse! It gives me motivation to watch postseason ball

Yea, no self respecting Cards fan can root for the Cubs under any circumstances.

The only exception I can see is that if we didn't make it again next year, it would be kinda cool to see them go exactly 100 yrs and win another. Then we'd have some creative new jokes to make once they fall back into ineptitude.

But you can't be a good Cards fan and root for the Cubs to best us for the division, and then go on and win the WS. I would have rooted for them over the Yankees a few years ago, but nowadays I can't think of any other contending team I would less like to see win the WS. My sister's boyfriend said the same thing as Leon last night, and there were 4 people in that room ready to castrate him...

And, thankfully, no Cubs fans are like those Brewer and Cardinal fans posted so far in this thread.

I know it was mentioned already, but let's not paint with broad brushes. You can see in the game threads over there that multiple people have talked about this board in a favorable light, and the majority of the posters over there shoot down the lucky/undeserving nonsense.

I want to echo this post. Any fanbase in baseball in the Brewers' position would have people feeling the same way, but it's a pretty small and deliberate sample size represented in the quotes in this thread. I don't have the time now, but when I get home, I'm sure it won't be too tough to pull up quotes of a much more level-headed nature from over there. By and large, that's a decent community.

Completely agree with the last few posts. There are wingnuts in every fanbase. brewcrewfandave is absolutely right, as far as I can tell, when he says it's mainly one poster spewing sour grapes.

The Cubs have had more than their share of hard luck since . Nobody cried for us when we had tough breaks in the 2003 NLCS and late 2004, and key injuries + more tough breaks in 2005 and 2006.

And so I'm sure the more rational Brewer fans out there understand this completely: There is no such thing as karma or law of averages ... but .. if there were such as thing, we're still far from being in the black on the ledger of lucky breaks.
