1. Game 1 NLCS 9th inning HR

2. 60-62 off hapless Brewers pitching. They could have tried to intentionally walk him every time up in 98, but he would have somehow still homered off of them.

3. And, for some reason, in 2001, he hit an inside the park HR vs. the Pirates on a late September Saturday after the Cubs were eliminated. The team had nothing to play for, but he was still out there carrying them. He had 164 RBI that year and he earned every one of them. For everyone who got on him about leaving the last day in 2004, realize that was a once in a career type thing. The only time I can honestly remember when Sammy wasn't giving 100%.

1. Game 1 NLCS HR

2. Everything in 2001 - .328/64/160, .437/.737/1.174, 201 OPS+, 37 IBBs, all with no one else in his lineup with more than 17 HRs, the greatest individual season I have ever or likely will ever see by a Cubs player.

I don't think enough people appreciate that 2001 season. Given what was around him, it was darn near miraculous.

It's the closest anyone's ever come to single-handedly taking a team to the playoffs. That team doesn't win 75 games without Sammy. In my heart he'll always be that year's MVP, large-noggined record breakers be damned.

I saw him hit 2 HR against the Marlins

His 20 HR month of June in 1998.

the whole HR chase with McGwire in 1998.

I have fond memories of him, but much like Jordan on the Wizards, I don't give a fig about him anymore

After that interview in '98 when McGwire admitted to taking andro and the Cubs beat asks Sosa if he takes it and he pulls out a bottle of Flinstone's vitamins.

His mammoth HR against the Brew Crew (Luis Vizcaino?) that went across the street and down a street (Ardmore?). I had that game on tape forever. It's of course gone now. :(

I was also at the game where he hit #20 of June in 1998.

Definitely 9th inning of game one in the NLCS. I loved the game two HR where you can read Kenny Lofton's lips too.

The 20 HR month was just amazing.

Kenmore is the street.

The entirety of 98. I had always been a huge baseball fan, and I watched as many Cub games every year as I could, but that season marked the first year that I attempted to understand the game in any way. Between Wood and Sosa, I'll never forget that year.

Also, the home run he hit off the freaking lights in Houston. That thing would have gone 600 feet. I remember Chip Caray saying something like "ooooooh my god, where will it LAND?"

#1) 1998 - seems like a century ago.

#2) After having two hours to come up with some kind of slightly plausible explantion, the utterly ridiculous "he used his corked batting practice bat by mistake'' excuse Sharon Panozzo and the Cubs PR Dept. came up with at the press conference for Sammy after he was caught redhanded with a corked bat was the most hilarious thing I've ever heard - a dysfunctional organization at its comedic best.

I loved Sosa in his early to mid 20s right when he started getting into the 30/30 club. Sure, he'd have as many BBs and steals but he was amazing to watch despite being so raw.

15th inning homer against the Cards in the 5 game series in 2004?

Walk off HR off Hoffman to cap a comeback

That's the one I was going to say b/c I was actually there. I remember and appreciate most/all of the other moments, but being there really ingrains it in my memory.

The only time I was in person for a Sammy HR was when he hit 2 at Dodger Stadium in 2003 - it was Prior's second game back from the Giles collision and he threw a complete game. Awesome game.

1. HR #38 on 8/5/96, which I was fortunate enough to scoop up after it deflected off a rather large man who was seated one row in front of me.

2. The first game back from suspension on 6/18/03 in Cincinnati: I watched as Sammy hit a monster shot to dead center, effectively handing a STFU to the moronic Reds fans who had been giving him hell all night.

Batting practice before a Cards/Cubs game in 1994. Sosa hit a ball that one-hopped the wall of the LF bleachers in old Busch Stadium straight into my glove. That is the only ball I have caught at a game, even if it was BP.

1. Taking steroids

2. Participating in the homerun derby and then going on the DL

3. Corked bat episode

4. Forgetting English at the steroid hearings

5. Leaving the last game early in 2004

6. Demanding his music be played on the stereo even when he wasn't there

Game 1 NLCS home run. I couldn't believe it. I was so shocked that I didn't even cheer. I just sat there in disbelief. It might have been because I was so angry that they had blown that first inning lead. But I remember in between pitches I changed the channel, and as soon as I turned it back, Sosa drilled the ball. Still can't believe he hit that.

Stupid ass Mark Guthrie and Mike Lowell. Jerks.

definitely. number 2 holds more significance with me, as i was 8 years old at that game in 1996. i've never seen a park so against one player before or since. that game really flared up my hatred for reds fans.
