That's a very interesting balanced article-and I would agree with him about everybody but Suppan that they definitely deserve to be on the overrated list. They just are overrated by different groups of people.

I guess Jacque Jones would have to be considered good by someone (other than Hendry) to make the overrated list.

His first argument for Drew being overrated is his lack of ASG appearances? Really? That's the worst you can say for him - he's not popular? You mean to tell me that fans didn't warm up to the guy that was widely attacked in the media for wanting out of Philly? Really? You don't say.

His career .391 OBP and .500+ SLG is great. And his career OPS+ of 131 looks pretty good too.

Sometimes Jayson Stark writes stupid things. This is one of them.

Looking at the list, the title ought to be the 10 most overpaid players. I think most of those players would drop off the list if you cut their salary in half.

Wickman? Sexson? Suppan? That's laughable. You never hear anything about any of those guys.

I've heard several times that Wickman is a "proven closer". And that Suppan is a "winner".

Sexson and Beltre aren't even thought of highly anymore, so they aren't really overrated.

When people battle me on this guy, I always sum it up this way: As great as Bobby Abreu can be, he lacks that all-important Derek Jeter gene. There is no voice in his head, screaming: "This ball has to be caught." Or: "That runner on third has to be driven in." In Philadelphia, where he was the centerpiece of the franchise, that one flaw showed up way too glaringly. Now, in New York, as the Yankees flounder, they're getting aggravated over the same stuff. Funny how that happens.

Oh boy.

Gotta love that...

There is no voice in his head, screaming: "I have to dive into the stands after catching a routine foul pop." Or: "I must slide into first in a feeble attempt to beat a routine groundball to the third baseman." Fixed.

Where's Adrian Beltre?

People usually have to think a player is somewhere in the realm of 'good' in order for that player to be considered overrated.

AGREED

He's not overrated, everyone knows he sucks.

EDIT:

Beaten, I see.

Why is Juan Pierre on the list?

People who haven't seen him play don't know how freaking horrible he is. They just see the steals total.

Yeah, I really didn't get the Abreu explanation. He lists reasons why Abreu has been a great player for his career, then says he's overrated because he doesn't have a "Derek Jeter gene." Such a ridiculous argument, I really wish Jeter would have been a Blue Jay or Royal his whole career.

and starky wasnt just calling out this season.

The book was mostly about assessing careers. This column is more about where these players stand on the illusion/reality meter right now.

i found it hard to take anything he wrote seriously after he mentioned the "derek jeter gene."

I remember when Brian Giles was always mentioned as an underrated player. Funny how he's considered overrated now.

When one is underrated for so long.. they become highly overrated because the fans who followed him always considered him amazing compared to the underratings then once the nonbelievers see he's good and accept the fact, all of the sudden a player acheives Godliness.
