good, surprisingly. looks like he's found the sinker. not throwing so many pitches, either. his GB numbers are getting back to where they were.

he just doesn't seem to resemble the guy from last year.

his walks are down quite a bit. his fip is 3.87 but his hr rate should be a bit higher (even with the more gbs).

the big deal is a reduction in walks and homers. i dunno how sustainable it is.

He's been amazing. Looks like Larry might have been on to something.

Are you suggesting that Larry may have found and fixed something the great Dave Duncan and Cards coaching staff didn't find or fix? Isn't that against the law or impossibility?

And don't forget Leo Mazzone and the Braves coaching staff.

I remembered that as well, however, we all know its a mortal sin to question the Braves MO.

I heard a quote from Marquis on how he changed his delivery this year and never felt comfortable last year. I am not sure if Larry helped him out, but whatever he is doing seems to be working. Unfortunately, Marquis is a good first half pitcher and a terrible second half one. Let's hope he can keep this up (I'd take a 4.00 ERA at the end) well into the season.

he's definitely improved since the start of the season, but i'm not jumping on this bandwagon yet.

Yeah, I'm shocked at his performance thus far, but there's always that feeling -- the 'waiting for the other shoe to drop' feeling.

His career numbers tell us he will start getting hit eventually. Hopefully it's later rather than sooner.

I thought he'd be a "quality start" pitcher at his best, ie 6 ip 3 er outings. I definitely wasn't expecting 0 or 1 run in 4 of 6 outings.

Same here. I think the best thing to hope for is quality starts for most of the rest of the year. He is bound to have an implode game at some point, I just folks don't go nuts on him after one such bad game.

Yeah, he'll go out there one day and won't have the control or the movement and get tagged up pretty good. The key will be coming back after. Kind of like what Lilly needs to do now that he's had his first crushing.

Lilly didn't really get crushed though. Sure he gave up 9 hits and 4 ER in less than 6 complete. But he maintained a 5/1 K/BB ratio and a couple of those hits were bunt hits, while 2 of the runs scored because of Izturis's incompetence.

I gotta say, crow tastes pretty darn good.

We're a few months into a contract that lasts a few years. I'm not eating anything until we're a little further down this path.

Absolutely. But I'd be more than happy to start looking for recipes.

Right, I don't disagree with the thread at all. Marquis has been an incredibly pleasant surprise thus far. I'd be happy to eat a year's worth of crow if Marquis is this good for the next several years.

But we're talking like 6 starts, so I'm not even looking for recipes at this point. It's not like we all didn't suspect Neifi would come back down to earth after he carried us for a month in 2005 (was it 2005? I can't remember anything anymore, I'm getting old).

Here's the best part for me. He's been getting better peripherally.

First 3 Starts: 9/10 K/BB, 28/17 GO/FO, 1.23 WHIP, 17 IP

Last 3 Starts: 10/3 K/BB, 36/22 GO/FO, 0.88 WHIP, 21.2 IP

I dunno. There should be some fudge factor for the numbers against the Pirates yesterday to adjust them as if they played against major leaguers. That was pathetic.

Wonder what great advice we're getting from Izturis?
He's teaching the hitters how to drive in runs with their gloves. :D

I'm in the boat that says its great he has gotten off to this kind of start and that it is probably due to Rothschild's coaching, but the key with Marquis seems to be will he continue to trust his stuff and repeat his motion after getting rocked once or twice. Can he stay confident and find it again?

I think things will even out over the course of this season. I'll be shocked if he finishes with an ERA under 3.50. I expect he'll be between 4 and 4.5 by the end of the year and I'd be happy with that.

Even if his final ERA is double what it is now (2.09) I would be more than happy with that considering it would be a drop of nearly two ER/9 from last year and much better than most of us could have expected.

I'll be happy with whatever Marquis does from here on out. That's just the kind of guy I am.

Actually, an ERA under 4.00 at the end of the season would make me very happy, as I'm sure it will you all, and most Chicago Cubs.

That's what I expect as well-somewhere between 4 and 4.5, which means he would be an above average starter for this year-I'd definitely take it.

i'd be happy with a 4.5, i said that at the beginning of the season and i'm sticking with it.

The thing about a 4.50, at this point, is that he'd probably have to pitch to nearly a 5.00 ERA the rest of the way to get up that high, assuming he throws 200 innings this year. That means he'd pretty much suck from here on out. I don't think I would have been "happy" with a 4.50 ERA, going into the season. Although if you offered me that I may have taken it.

I think I would have been happy with a 4.10-4.20 ERA though. And to get to that he'd have to spend the rest of the year around 4.70.
