In a rental car (due to a crash three days before), High, twice the legal alcohol limit and talking on a cell phone. Thank God this Moron didn't hit any innocent people.

St. Louis medical examiner Michael Graham said Hancock's blood-alcohol level was 0.157, nearly twice Missouri's legal limit of 0.08.

Mokwa said cell phone records showed Hancock was speaking with a female acquaintance at about the time of the accident. Mokwa said the conversation ended abruptly, presumably when the accident occurred.

I'm amazed these people don't just call a cab?

Going down the freeway at a good rate of speed. Drunk. Packing the pipe. The other hand holding the pipe. Then, the other reaching for a lighter. Then trying to light it.

It wouldn't happen while driving.

With a 4th hand on the phone. Word around my office via St. Louis is that he was texting back and forth with one of the strippers from the club, with the last text not long before the crash.

Some CardinalDugout forum member says it was his g/f.

Back when I smoked, and the few I know who do smoke, the place of preference to smoke was in a moving vehicle. I watched my younger brother light with one hand, hold the pipe with the other, steer with his left knee while pressing the clutch, and use his right knee to smack the gearshift from second to third. Most veteran potheads have NO trouble driving while lighting up, and in many cases doing something else in addition.

I've definitely seen some things that in retrospect were just so stupid. And not just by 16 year olds either. The amount of shifting, stearing, packing and lighting that are done concurrently is actually quite impressive when you don't think about it.

I'm not a religious fanatic, but it's people like you that prove there's a higher power watching over us. Of course, the veteran potheads that you are mentioning aren't the ones that were killed while "lighting up, and in many cases doing something else in addition."

It's a tangent, but I partially blame the harsh anti drinking and anti pot laws that are out there, that force so many kids, who are going to drink and going to smoke to go into hiding when doing it. Many adults conveniently forget when their drinking age was 18, and how they still broke the laws. Kids are going to drink, and many kids are going to smoke. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, on it's own.

Did they change the definition of "prove" ?

You obviously don't get it and that's the scary part. I don't care how much or how often you get high or drunk, just don't drive a car while you're doing it. I'm trying not to make this personal, but to brag about driving while lighting up and doing numerous other things at the same time is insane.

..........

I never tried to justify doing it. I'm not proud of the dumb things I did as a kid, and I'm a staunch anti driving under the influence person.

...............

I'm saying part of the problem is that people try to marginalize kids who could otherwise drink and/or smoke in safe conditions, if some people didn't demonize such activities, and that if we took a different attitude toward the subject we could probably cut down on many of the deaths.

............ I've made it quite clear where I stand on this and I never once bragged about anything related to this. I shot down the notion that there's no way he could have smoked the weed while driving. That's it.

Screw you.

So again, screw you.

I think you both need a bowl.

The important thing to remember is that Josh Hancock is dead. For a reason.

I don't think drinking and smoking makes you a bad person, but you have to realize that it is stupid to do those things, and even more stupid to operate a vehicle while under the influence. Everyone knows that.

But Josh Hancock wasn't a hellbound loser. He just got pinched playing with fire. Many of us do it all the time, and because we have gotten away with it we think it will never happen to us.

You have to be careful out there. Hancock is gone because he wasn't. EVERYONE has their skeletons in their closet.

BTW, I don't know if it is linked anywhere on this site - but here is the surveillence of the accident....

I disagree. Twice the legal alcohol limit, 13 mph over the speed limit, drugs in the car and on his way to another bar so he could keep drinking and driving. I'd call that a hellbound loser. So what if other people have done it or have skeletons in their closet. It was pure luck he didn't kill that tow truck driver.

Yeah, it's hard to have sympathy for people when they endanger lives with poor decisions - but there are thousands of ways to do that. We all obviously have very strong feelings about this - but with respect for Hancock, we should stop passing judgement as we all have our faults.

That's a cop-out. The guy got in an accident after a late night 3 nights before killing himself. That's reckless, death wish stupidity. Just because I got behind the wheel drunk when I was 17 doesn't mean I can't criticize a 29 year old for going way beyond just making a foolish mistake.

He couldn't smoke his weed in the cab without sharing with the cabbie.

I'm really not trying to make excuses for him, or make it seem like I have sympathy for idiots who decide to drink and drive.

A lot of pages about the weed he had, and I'm willing to bet money that it had nothing to do with his crash, even if he had lit up right before getting in the car. It was the alcohol, which is many times more harmful and dangerous than marijuana. The day our society realizes this will be a good day.

To be honest, if I had to rank the causes of this crash, it would be Alcohol, Cell Phone, Pot...in that order.

I hear a lot of pot advocates try to downplay the dangers of smoking and driving. I don't hold the least bit of resentment against pot smoking myself, but the fact remains it's very much a problem. The only difference is fewer people do it.

Oh, I'm not trying to downplay the danger of smoking and driving. You should not drive while impaired by ANYTHING. And that goes for painkillers too. Hell, that even goes for Nyquil. I was just noting that the primary cause of the crash was the fact he was drunk off his ass and on the cell phone.

Completely agree. I just think the presence of pot in the car just adds to the "he was a reckless nutjob" argument. Not because pot smokers are reckless nutjobs, but due to these specific circumstances.

Form today's Post-Dispatch:

"But on Tuesday, sources close to the investigation told the Post-Dispatch that a small tin holding a small amount of marijuana had been recovered from the wreckage. A source with the Cardinals said the team had been made aware of the finding on Monday night."

This is what I find pretty interesting in light of Tony LaRussa's implied threat to the media about swinging the fungo bat the other day. He KNEW about this when he was out there speaking to his team. He KNEW this would come out and he still tried to cover up and keep the vultures of the media away from his players. What an idiot! :pukel:

i'm not sure of your point. regardless of how pertinent it was in this case, the dangers of pot+driving shouldn't be downplayed. in fact, i've known more than a few people who choose to smoke reefer instead of drink because they think it's safer to drive that way. Impairment is impairment.

It would be great if they could invent a car with a sensor that wouldn't start if the driver is impaired. Another feature would be a cut-off switch on the ignition when it senses cell phone use. With those two features you could probably reduce accidents by 80%.

They have the impairment thing, at least for alcohol. In Arizona, they have a device that they force you to install in your car if you have a DUI where you actually have to blow a 0.03 or lower for the ignition to start. Obviously it would be unconstitutional to force everyone to install such a device, but its a start.
