Yay for HGH!

Sammy is a fraud and always will be.

Go play in the street or something.

He's allowed to have an opinion, no matter how baseless it may be..

Baseless? I don't need court documents to know that Sammy's physical development required something more than a normal workout routine. I think you'll also see a transformation in his body from 2005 to 2007. Strange how a seemingly washed-up player goes away for a year and comes back bigger and hitting home runs again. Hmmm, I wonder... But don't ask Sammy about it, he can only speak English when he's praising himself.

Yea, because anyone would be stupid enough to make a roid-induced comeback when millions of people are already questioning him about his past because he thrived in the steroid era.

Sosa is totally that dumb.

There is no test for HGH, so what does he have to lose? He's not the only one, but it's naive to think that a significant number of major league players aren't still using performance-enhancing drugs.

You're right, there is no test for HGH. However, one could come along at any time. Those urine samples have a funny way of hanging around forever, and tests done on them have this funny way of leaking out of grand juries. Do you really think that Sammy wants a retroactive failed test to happen, even years from now.

Never mind that, yes, you're right, Sammy could have been in the Dominican Republic shooting up on HGH...but what is he doing now? He isn't vanishing before our eyes. And I would imagine that with pharmacies being raided, doctors going to jail, and careers being ruined...HGH is probably a difficult thing to purchase in this country right now.

Lets be honest here. This has nothing to do with performance enhancing drugs. This is a player who continues to be loathed for mistakes he made as a Cub. And you know, I understand it a little bit. I was pissed at him for the bat. I was pissed at him for abandoning us on the last game. But then I moved on.

Two head shaking incidents do not negate all of the joy Sammy gave me over the years, practically being the only thing that kept my Cub love alive for a lot of them.

Did Sammy use 'roids at some point? Probably. For a lot of years it was the Wild Wild West in MLB. ANYONE who played the game during that era could have. So, really, isn't it best to just move the bleep on and be content to just call it "The Steroid Era"? Because unless you were complaining about this during the Sammy/McGwire homer chase, you're being a hypocrite. EVERYONE knew it then, we just chose not to deal with it. I knew then that it wasn't natural for a mans head to double in size like Big Mac's did. But I was having fun, and looked the other way.

And we can't have it both ways, now can we?

I don't care about the steroid allegations. The players can shoot up all they want IMHO — they still have to hit the baseball.

The corked bat thing and leaving early are what pissed me off.

Umm, we already had this discussion on this thread. If you go back about 11 pages, I'm sure you'll find everyone's response to this kind of nonsense.

GREAT post, dude. And true. Heck, McGuire had Andro OUT IN THE OPEN in his LOCKER during an INTERVIEW and it was only mildly controversial. Now he's disgraced and no longer a lock for the HOF.

Yet we cheered.

Yet we followed every AB of both Sosa and McGuire.

Yet we smiled and enjoyed those goofy press conferences.

And Yet they were credited with 'saving' MLB after the disaster of '94.

So, I agree. Let's not be hypocrites and pretend. I hope Sammy was always clean. I have my doubts. But he has my support now in TX.

2 big ifs:

1. if baseball really WAS on the ropes and destined to go the way of hockey,

2. and if steroids were a big part of the '98 HR chase that saved the game,

then THANK GOD for steroids. As baseball fans we owe them a debt of gratitude.

I never cared about the leaving early thing. The corked bat was ridiculous, but he was probably only hurting himself.

if sammy puts up an .875 OPS or higher and hits 30 bombs this year, that'll be a heck of a signing for Texas. How much are they paying him?

I don't know how much they're paying him, but I'm pretty sure I remember it being a minor league contract. Anything more would have been a huge risk, and probably one I would have mocked Texas for taking.

Sammy Sosa dh-of

1 year/$0.5M (2007)

contract purchased 4/07

signed as a free agent 1/07 (minor-league contract)

$2.2M in performance bonuses based on plate apperaances:

$0.2M each for 200, 250 & 300 PAs

$0.25M each for 350, 400, 450 & 500 PAs

$0.3M each for 550 & 600 PAs

award bonus: $0.2M for Comeback Player of the Year

Low base pay, incentive-laden contract for player that has potential to be great but no reason to believe it will actually happen. Same reasons I still think Wood's contract was a good signing. I think this means it already is a heck of a signing for Texas.

Whether you care about steroids (or HGH) or not, I agree with you. You still have to have tremendous hand-eye coordination to not only hit the ball, but to hit a fly ball hard enough to have a reasonable shot at being a HR (aided by steroids or not). That's why Bonds has to be considered one of the all-time greats whether he used steroids or not. When the smoke has cleared, we will probably find out that there were a bunch of skinny players who used steroids and hit .250 with 12 HRs per season. Bonds and Sosa are two exceptional talents that probably used steroids to complement their exceptional talent.

i hope sammy gets 600 this year, and bonds takes over aaron this year, and they hold a press conference together and totally sing each other's praises and embrace.

I laughed.

For the record, I am bigger than I was 5 years ago. It was definitely not the roids that did it.

Is steroids by a hitter at all countered by the fact that a lot of pitchers were also on the juice?

Steroids are only taken by prolific HR hitters.

Alex Sanchez agrees.

Pitchers have never cheated, either. Ever. Just ask Gaylord Perry.

sammy sosa's current BABIP: .231

In other words, look the eff out when his luck evens out.

Ehh, a low babip happens when a lot of your hits are going out of the park. Even with all the home runs, Sammy's probably just a .250 hitter anymore, so unless his power goes out, his babip will probably stay low.

That's a pretty dumb argument. The fact is, he's hitting almost .250 with more homeruns and RBI's than our entire outfield.

I don't think you understand what he meant by that.

Nobody expects Sosa to be a prime-time player anymore.

It's pretty funny to watch all the Sosa haters squirm every time he hits another home run. Here's to hoping Sosa gets under your skin many more times this year.

Yeah that was sarcasm.

I agree. The Sosa-haters were so sure he was done now they have to attack his character since he's found his power again. I'd love to see him end the year with 30+ homers. And what's funny, that is within the realm of possibilities.
