The Arizona Cardinals select Kenny Irons, RB - Auburn

Edge is old and needs to be in a platoon. Irons is really talented, and getting him in the third round is a steal.

Edge is only gonna be 29 in August. Of course, he is going on 9 years in the league, but he doesn't have that many carries.

Not many compared to whom? He's got over 2500, and another 400 catches. That's not Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith territory, but it's more than most featured backs in this era of bigger, faster, stronger defenders. Including Priest Holmes, the recently retired Tiki Barber, the shadow of his former self Corey Dillon, the short lived Ahman Green, even the relatively steady stalwart Warrick Dunn. And it's a heck of a lot more than Terrell Davis.

I think in this current era, that any team should feel fortunate to get 2000 solid carries out of a guy before he starts to fade fast. A platoon situation could help spread those 2000 yards over 8, 9 or 10 years. But any runner who has the workload of Edge should not be counted on for the longterm, especially when he's already shown a sharp dropoff in effectiveness.

I see your point, but your comparisons aren't very good, because Barber, Dunn, and Holmes weren't feature backs for the first 4 years of their careers. Davis had a much shorter career and he and Holmes had many more carries per game in their prime than Edge did. Dillon's about even in his career RPG.

He's only about 300 yards short of Eddie George's career total. In his final four years (2001-04) Eddie was still solid, but not dominant like his youth. His highest total yardage in those years was 2002 when he carried for 1165 yards, still lower than at any point in his prime.

Getting a young future replacement for Edge and a platoon partner is not a bad idea.

I wasn't comparing the guys to find an exact replica. I was showing that he has a lot of carries when you compare him to just about anybody but Emmitt Smith and Payton. And that finding him a platoon would be very wise, considering how often guys at his age/mileage, lose effectiveness.

I didn't say it was a bad idea. Just disputing that he was old and "needs" a platoon. What he needs is an offensive line.

Darn, I was looking at Stanton. Oh well. So, with their 3rd round pick, the Vikings select:

Tim Shaw LB Penn State

I'm a bit biased with this pick, for obvious reasons. I've had my eye on him, and the Vikings need help at LB since Ben Leber just ain't gonna cut it and who knows if Greenway will be healthy enough.

Prior4CyYoung and the Texans are now on the clock. I'll send him a PM.

With the seventh pick in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins select Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State.

Damn you

Don't worry, he'll be going to the Raiders anyway.

Gotta remember that Stanton was once the #1 QB in this draft class (granted that was not including Russell who was a Jr.). There's a reason for that. He didn't lose talent. He didn't live up to his hype, but this is a rare situation where I blame a ton on the people around him. Coaching staff was horrible. His teammates literally quit during the season.

at Michigan State??? No, players at that school would never quit during the middle of the season.

When was that? If Stanton was ever the #1 QB in this class it's news to me and reason enough to stop paying attention to whatever source made that claim.

Probably before Weis came to Notre Dame and turned Quinn into a top notch NFL prospect. VY would have been a senior this year but I don't think he was rated all that highly going into Texas' national championship year. He was still thought of as good but I don't think he was projected as the best QB in his class.

I think the texans are gonna want someone for matt schaub to throw the ball to since they spent a lot to get him. So with the texans third round pick they select WR Craig Davis from LSU.

I dont know what to make about Stanton. He will need work in a pro style offense thats for sure. Most of his damage in CFB was his ability to scramble and move around the pocket when things broke down. Teams really had to defend his running ability on non passing/spread offense option running plays too. He wont have that advantage anymore. Sure he has a high completion % but thats what that spread offense is about. Tim Couch had high % but they were all those dink and dunk short passes that doesnt play well in the NFL. Stanton has talent but he will definetly be a work in progress.

Yes, it was after his sophomore season.
