Stan Heath brought Kent State to their best season ever, and then took over a pretty lousy team and did this:

2003 9-19 4-12

2004 12-16 4-12

2005 18-12 6-10

2006 22-10 10-6

2007 21-14 7-9

I think Billy Gillispie is a fine choice and I don't blame Arkansas for canning Heath if they think Gillispie is available, but I actually thought Heath did an okay job at Arkansas. After back-to-back NCAA tourney appearances and some highly-rated recruiting classes, I think he deserved a shot to coach what looks like a strong team next year. Hope he gets another job and can prove Arkansas wrong for firing him.

Heath is a fine recruiter, and a solid x & o guy. I think you give too much credit to Heath for what shoudl have happened by natural progression. There are certain things about the Heath era which were just unacceptable--the absolute inability to win a road game, for eample. Being a .200 road team is not acceptable. Getting blown out by inferior teams is not acceptable. This Arkansas team had no business playing worse at the end of the season than it did early on. It was a turnover factory this season, last season, and all prior. It's depended too much on three-point accuracy as to whether it wins or loses, and hasn't picked up enough quality shooters. There really is no reason for a team with the wealth of big men Arkansas has (five men 6-8 and up) to be near the bottom in the SEC in rebounding and have a 6-1 guard second on the team in that category. And, perhaps worst of all, the same quotes keep coming out of postgame interviews. "they just wanted it more." "We got outplayed." "We got outhustled." While a lot of people think he should have had one more chance to get this talented team where they got, all I can see is that...it should have been this year. It just should have. I do wish coach Heath good luck, and I feel he can succeed in a different environment. He just doesn't work for what Arkansas wants and expects from its basketball program.

Why would Gillispie leave aTm for the Arkansas job? He doesn't have any ties there, and it's not really a step up for him.

My guess is money.

Louisville media reporting Donavon and UK have reached an agreement, 7/28 million.

Supposedly to be announced after the Final 4.

i heard about this last night from a friend, but didn't believe it. i hope it's true, though. if it is, they're really opening the pocketbook for donovan

Unfort. UK couldn't pull off the miracle by stealing/buying Donovan away.

Right now, it appears UK has a final four list of Gillespie (Texas A&M), Barnes (Texas), Calipari (Memphis), and Izzo (Michigan St)

I don't see Izzo leaving at all, Barnes appears comfortable in Austin which leaves Calipari or Gillespie. I'm still thinking Calipari.

Me too. Last year right after the final four the U of M announced an extension and salary incrase for Cal. This year bumkiss. Either they're waiting to see if he bites or his already reeled in.

Barnes says he's staying in Texas.

I just read that over the wire too. There are rumors that Calipari would turn it down as well, hopefully that isn't the case as it would leave Gillespie as the next likely candidate.

It is frustrating to see how this program has declined over the last 10 years.

Either way, Gillespie or Calipari would be an upgrade, IMO, espec. recruiting.

why in the heck would calipari insist on staying at a c-usa school? is he that married to a kid a who'll probably only play one year for him anyway?

Crean is still listed as a poss. candidate, he's turned down positions in the past. As far as him and UK, I think UK could do better.

As far as Calipari, there have been rumors that he would not be interested and that Barnhart would not be interested, as far as him and Arkansas, I have no idea.

Nah, Calipari wanted to stay at Memphis last year as well-he's made a few stops now, so maybe he just had found a job he feels comfortable at and doesn't need to jump schools-he still schedules well enough that Memphis can get one of the top seeds most years.

it just seems like a lot more work for him is all.

Calipari signed an extension through 2012 in late March, so he may be at least close to off the market.

We have had a tremendous seven years, especially in the incredible ride during the past two seasons and I look forward to continuing that success in coming years.

This may mean nothing, but I think it'll have some impact on whether or not he leaves (it'll certainly mean UK has to pay more if he's interested).

Some coaches like the added challenge. Why would Donovan even consider leaving Florida - where he's worshipped - and going to Kentucky - where he'll be mobbed if they don't win it all next year.

It would be more work, but some like the extra work.
