i don't understand for the life of me why contracts that professional athletes sign automatically lock them in for a set duration of years, prohibiting free agency. but why coaches are free to look into any offer they want--even after signing extensions the same years in which they move on.

If a team makes a player unhappy, they can still trade him. If a coach is unhappy, all that happens is that the coach can ruin the team the next year. Technically, coaches are not free to look at other offers unless the team gives permission, but the team usually does because the cost of an coach who doesn't want to be there anymore is simply too high with little reward.

Good move, he's definitely not a bad 3rd option and cert. doesn't qualify as settling for Gillespie.

I think Gillispie is a great hire. If UK really contacted Barnes, fans should be thankful he turned them down. Gillispie is better than Barnes. I really wanted UK to drop down and have to settle for Crean, but was pretty sure Gillispie would take the job. Gillispie would've been on my radar if I was IU last year, I'd been tracking him since his UTEP turnaround.

This may set up a recruiting battle for DeAndre Jordan. He may stay with A&M, I have no idea, and they might not let him out of his LOI, though I would doubt that. If not, I'm sure UK would want him (though generally, coaches don't recruit players they left behind). If Shaw does leave IU and Jordan is let out of his LOI, IU may be a big player for him.

Gillespie said all the right things at the press conference. i'd be lying if i said i wasn't excited.

You should be. I hate Kentucky, but think this is a home run. Gillispie has been nothing short of a miracle worker at his previous two stops.

I listened to about the 1st 10 minutes of it. I was gald to hear to say how important recruiting in-state was. I'm looking forward more to the Texas recruiting aspect though.

Like I said before UK hit a home run, IU fans are going to have to sweat out Bud Mackey. Though I do think he'll end up in Bloomington.

I'm posting this here rather than starting a separate thread, but it is somewhat Kentucky-related. Arkansas has hired John Pelphrey as their new coach. Pelphrey was most recently head coach at South Alabama and was previously an assistant at Florida. He played at Kentucky during the late 80s/early 90s period when they were on NCAA probation. He, along with Richie Farmer, Sean Woods, and Deron Feldhaus, are considered UK heroes because they stuck with the program during it's darkest time (collectively they are known as the Unforgettables). They led Kentucky to the Elite 8 and legendary loss to Duke in the regional championship game (the Christian Laettner buzzer-beater) their first year eligible for the tournament after the sanctions.
