Good move by the Gophers, meh move for Tubby.

On one hand he's going to a lower profile job which means lower expectations than what he had at Kentucky. On the other hand, it's a lower profile job and he'll have a harder time landing top recruits because of it.

We'll see how this works out. Since both of my parents graduated from Minnesota, I hope it works out well.

well I would believe that better recruits will come to Minnesota now that Tubby is there.

Any speculation on who will move to Kentucky? Who is the mid-major flavor of the week? SIU coach? Winthrop? VCU?

Good for Tubby. One national title and consistent NCAA appearances wasn't enough for the fans at UK b/c they have nothing else to root for.

It's still a lower profile job and it's Minnesota. Where do you think the average top recruit is going to like more, North Carolina or Minnesota.

Well.... Monson did snag Kris Humphries(cause Coach K told him to kiss off). I happy that Smith got out of UK, the SEC programs that are one sport dominant have really harsh fans(alabama, kentucky)

This is interesting:

Gonzaga coach Mark Few and Notre Dame's Mike Brey are expected to be candidates to replace Smith.

Meanwhile, while watching the defending national champion Gators practice in St. Louis in preparation for their Sweet 16 game against Butler on Friday, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley did not seem particularly concerned if Kentucky pursues coach Billy Donovan.

When asked whether he expected Kentucky to contact Donovan, Foley replied, "It's a free world. There's nothing to prevent them from doing that."

"We're trying to win an NCAA championship. He's our coach and he's been tremendously loyal for a long time. That's all I'm going to say about it."

Donovan and Foley have been discussing a contract extension but have not agreed to one. Foley said he expected it to get done.

Many UK fans hated Tubby and wanted him gone. It was an opportune time to pick up a fat paycheck and go somewhere with less stress. It was a lot easier than getting fired, which would have happened either this year or next. This will work out well for all parties.

I am already hearing Gillespie, Crean, Calipari and, yes, Billy Donovan.

i think over the past 4 or 5 years, kids were picking North carolina over kentucky too, so what's the difference for Tubby?

What does NC have to do with this?

I'm not doubting whether or not he can get big recruits because his name alone will make recruits listen to him. And believe me, I hope he does land some major recruits and make Minnesota basketball at least respectable in the Big 10. I'm just saying that a lot of top recruits are going to think "Minnesota, why would I want to go there?" IIRC with Humphries, he was from Minnesota anyway which definitely helped.

I agree with being happy for him to get out UK because of all the criticism he was under.

I just threw out a big name school. You could easily sub Kansas, UCLA, Duke, etc. in there for North Carolina and it wouldn't make a difference.

Minnesota. The average recruit will never get in the game at UNC.

But it does make a difference. Kansas, UCLA, Duke, NC, etc. may have a longer history of continued success, but most of that has to do with the level of coaching at that school. Duke is successful because they have a great coach, not just because it's cool to go to Duke.

It's the whole package that I'm referring to not just the name of the school. A great coach + a long history of success + more exposure > A great coach.

It's great hire by Minnesota. Tubby did quite a good job at Kentucky, no maybe not up to their expectations, but UK was very successful under him. His recruiting may not have been great, but the man can coach. This just makes the Big Ten stronger, which will only continue if Kruger goes to Iowa as rumored and if Michigan hires a real coach for a change.

As for Kentucky, I'm sure Donovan, Gillespie and maybe even Matta will be rumored but their message boards seem to believe that Crean is the leader. If you ask me, I think that's a little underwhelming for a program of Kentucky's stature. I know I seem to be in the minority on that, though.

I completely agree, in both football and basketball. All it takes is that one coach, and you school is on the map.

i think it's way more about the coach than the program history. You don't think Bobby Knight instantly improved the recruiting at TT? Or that Roy Williams immediately resurrected the recruiting at UNC? Conversely, if Coach K left Duke and some schmoe replaced him, don't you think the recruiting would suffer?

It's both. The loss of a good coach would cause the recruiting to suffer, but program prestige still plays a big part. Roy Williams didn't have to resurrect recruiting at UNC-they already had a ton of talent there when he got to the school. IU still got some key recruits when Davis was there. Schools with great program history can survive a lot longer without a good coach than schools who don't have it.
