On Tuesday, the results of the Veterans Committee ballot will be announced. This will be Santo's last chance for the HOF until 2009.

On the 2005 ballot, Santo and Gil Hodges both received 52 votes which was eight votes shy of what he needed for election.

Phil Rogers writes about all this today.

Link.

Seven former players, writers and broadcasters were added to the electorate since the 2005 ballot: Ryne Sandberg, Wade Boggs, Bruce Sutter, Peter Gammons, Tracy Ringolsby, Gene Elston and Jerry Coleman.

If Santo could go 7-for-7 with that group, while Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and his other advocates change the minds of a few others who left him off the last two times, then he would have a chance for election.

Here's hoping that Santo gets in. I'm not optimistic about that happening.

I'm not sure how on God's green earth a rational person with even a rudimentary understanding of stats can look at Ron Santo's career and not see a Hall of Fame induction. I doubt he gets in as well.

Good luck finding one of those. There aren't that many of them out there.

According to comments made during HOF weekend 2005, both Sandberg and Boggs said they would vote for Santo.

Based on things Gammons has written, I'm certain he'll vote for Santo as well.

Santo will gain votes, but the number needed to get in is a bit higher as well since it's based on a percentage.

Mike Schmidt used to be of the opinion to not vote for anyone on the vet ballot. He's since changed his mind, so mayber there's another vote.

A thought....

with some voters going with the not voting for anyone in the steroid generation route or having serious doubts about the credibility of numbers from that period, do some become more sympathetic to the "old schoolers" who most definitely had no artificial help?

Thats what I was thinking too. About Schmidt....hahaha(like the movie)... Last summer he was on MLB Radio on XM and he talked about Santo, when they were mentioning players he would vote for now that he changed his opinion about first time HOF.

Bill James has talked many time about how criminal it is that Santo isnt in the HOF. He rated him as the 3rd greatest 3rd baseman ever.

That's an interesting thought. I bet at least one of the vets will see it that way.

I'm convinced it's only a matter of time until Santo gets in. I would love to see him get in this year, but I have a feeling he's going to come up literally one or two votes short. (Hey, he's a Cub, we're used to heartbreak) But the next ballot he's on, he will surely get in.

I believe there are 83 members, so you need 63 votes to make it in, assuming everyone votes. I think Sutter and Elston will probably vote for Santo as well since they have Cubs connections.

Tracy Ringolsby is a big SABR guy, so that's another vote there.

Not sure on Coleman... he wasn't a NL broadcaster during Santo's peak years.

He will be much closer than 2 years ago, within 5 votes, and has a shot to make it if a few persons change their minds.

I'm hopeful it's this year. Santo's health is a concern. We need a Wrigley Field celebrate for Ron's induction with him leading the 7th inning stretch and waving to a standing ovation.

Sadly, I think Santo will be inducted posthumously. I think the Cubs would have waited to retire his number until he was inducted if they thought he would survive that long. Sorry to be morbid, but the guy has multiple things going on with him health-wise.

The Cubs who are in need to campaign for him. It sounds bad, but that's how voting processes work.

I have so little respect for Schmidt based on his past comments about the Hall that I boycott him on my sim teams.

Maybe Schmidt has changed his stance on voting for someone for the Hall ... when push comes to shove, I really wonder if he'd ever vote for another 3rd baseman, and I doubt he would.

More guys should get to experience the joy while they're alive. For sure, we can't keep Kaat out any longer and I hope the writers don't do it to Smith, the past all-time saves leader. They are welcome at my table Sunday night.

And consider Santo, Murphy, Herzog, and Harvey, and a vacant chair for Mauch, Hodges and Buck O'Neil (who by the way was just honored by President Bush as an American hero

Yeah, so, what do YOU think that link means?

Nothing much, in my opinion.

This is the one mention of Santo:

And consider Santo, Murphy, Herzog, and Harvey, and a vacant chair for Mauch, Hodges and Buck O'Neil (who by the way was just honored by President Bush as an American hero).

It's a shame, a true embarrassment that O'Neil wasn't voted in before he died. That embarrassment is due to voters like Schmidt. So now maybe he'll vote for O'Neil. I doubt he'll vote for Santo regardless of whatever lip service he pays to the Hall.

The average lifespan for a Type 1 Diabetic when he broke into the league was 25 years. If he's lasted this long, he may as well keep on living another 67 years (which I would love).

Bruce has a nice article on Santo's wait today.

Although he didn’t show it outwardly, he admitted to being nervous about today’s Veterans Committee vote for the Hall of Fame.

“Very,” he said. “I won’t sleep tonight.”

i normally don't care about awards and stuff (especially when it involves complete strangers), but, for some reason, i really, really, really hope he makes it.
