So where does he rank in order of our pitching prospects now. #1? Top 5? Top 10?

He would have to be in the top 5 depending on if Marshall, Hill, and Guzman are still considered "prospects" I would think.

BTW...I'm no longer considering Hill a "prospect"

probably in the top 10. i'm not too sure about the lower levels but you would have to put veal, sean g, pawlek, guzman & marmol ahead of him along with perhaps marshall.

Where does he go from here?

Daytona would be my guess. Maybe he is raw enough that they will want him to start in short season ball, but I think he did that last year and performed pretty well.

I thought one of the articles said Peoria.

Apparently into the rotation by 2008 according to Levine.

You have to start him in at least high A this year with a move to AA by the end of the year is the plan is for him start 2008 in the rotation.

Article, including Samardzija's statement:

"In closing, I want to let Cubs fans know that I am committed to their team and their goal -- to bring a World Series championship to this great franchise. I only hope I can be a part of that someday."

So he thinks he will play as long as Nolan Ryan or Julio Franco?

#1 (not counting Guzman). Higher ceiling than Veal.

Peoria. Levine might say 2008, but I don't see it happening (unless it's a September call-up).

I have to be honest that I simply don't follow the minor leagues very much. That being said, is our minor league pitching talent that bad or is Jeff that good? When he was drafted this summer I remember there was hype, but I didn't get the feeling that people thought he was an elite or even great talent.

Wow. Would you say he has a higher ceiling than Hill as well? Also, what are the chances of reaching his ceiling compared to Veal or Gallagher?

If that's true it will make it so much easier to root for a former Notre Dame guy.

Why would he decide to not try football too? I mean I know the reasons why he would, but what has changed in his mind since he originally wanted to try to do both?

I think if he fails in Baseball he can always go back to football and IMO it might not be as easy to do it the other way around.

Drew Henson says Hi.

Chad Hutchinson too, oh wait we want to forget about him

Quincy Carter says : "What aboout me, the QC?

Cute, but going back to play WR is not nearly as difficult as trying to be a QB in the NFL.

That said, it appears he is claiming his football life is over:

Even coming off a season in which he caught 78 passes for 1,017 yards and fashioned himself into a likely first round pick in April's NFL draft, Samardzija said there would be no returning to football.

Let's hope he turns to gold with the Cubbies. Hendry & crew not looking so stupid now for spending that draft pick, eh? I've heard Jeff throws in the mid 90's.
