Seems like other than the Scott Linebrink rumor, there has been very little to no interest in Giles. Belliard and Loretta on the market probably has something to do with that. It sure sounds like if they keep Reitsma, Giles could be a free agent. Given DeRosa's contract, is there any possibility Hendry could get involved?

Doubt Hendry gets involved, since he paid big for DeRosa. But I would play DeRosa in the same role he played in Texas. Platoon at whatever position the LH OF plays. Get time at SS, 2B, 3B and all over the OF. Giles isn't a guarantee to be better, but if you don't have to give up anything for him, it's a no brainer to try.

I would offer him a contract. He's better than DeRosa and DeRosa still brings versatility in a bench role or in an OF platoon.

 

I'm certain that there are teams that likely will offer Giles more money than the Cubs, but I wouldn't hesitate to make a move on him.

Agreed. I think it's unlikely JH will part with Izzy, but I prefer a middle infield of Giles/DeRosa as opposed to DeRosa/Izturis.

While teams may have been reluctant to trade talent to the Braves in exchange for Giles, I'd have to think quite a few teams would pursue him as a free agent.

With Walker accepting the Padres offer of arbitration, I'm not sure how much they will get into bidding for Giles.

 

While the Red Sox have said they will go with Pedroia, I could see them getting involved in a trying to sign Giles.

 

The Royals may try to throw some money his way as well.

Not really. DeRosa doesn't have the range to play SS full time.

 

I like Giles a lot. I'd have preferred him to DeRosa, but 2B is filled and DeRosa isn't getting moved to SS.

I think we would be much much better off leaving Izzy as the supersub. We won't get much out of izturis if you ask me.

no one else can handle the defense our pitching staff needs at SS i mean out of the Derosa Giles IZZy mix.

 

Izzy as long as he is healthy is needed unless we can get a better all around option at SS.. Giles and De Rosa wouldn't have the range.

 

Bench of De Rosa, Ward, Theroit, Blanco + 2 would not be bad at all.. we would have some solid subs to keep the starters fresh as well as some decent players for pinch hitting.

My guess is he ends up in San Diego, with Walker as the super-sub.

 

But, I'd go after Giles in a heartbeat. I don't see Hendry or Piniella moving DeRosa or Giles to short, but when Theriot beats out Izzy for the job with his bat, DeRosa makes for a nice bench option.

 

Someone will get hurt at one point or another. Having DeRosa to move around to wherever he is needed is a very important element this team needs.

We don't need a shortstop with range nearly as badly as most teams do. We have a very high strikeout staff, and I can't think of anybody besides Wuertz and Zambrano who gets a lot of groundballs (and Zambrano's GB/FB ratio was heading in the FB direction, IIRC). I know there's probably a couple other pitchers that have groundball tendencies, but it's not so significant that we have to have a guy with great range at SS. DeRosa would be a much better choice (and it would make his contract much more palatable to me)

Giles is the type a player the Cardinals pick up and is a thorn in the Cubs side all year long.....

 

We should sign him to a one year deal and if anything trade him at the deadline
