Why are so many national media outlets running this as fact without a source? Man media has just gone to the hounds these days.

 

See my above post about agents floating info. You'd be surprised at how many national (and some local) reporters run stuff without ever calling the club for confirmation.

 

don't the clubs pretty much not provide information anyway? I am pretty sure we can all recall GMs denying reports and then they turn out to be true. This rumor doesn't matter to me because I don't think that contract will get Schmidt signed anyway.

Maybe the Cubs people deny any question about an offer and the rumor came from Schimdt's people. Maybe the Cubs dont like for people to know who they have "offered" a contract to, they'd rather wait till its been accepted to leak it to the media. That would explain why the Cubs inside reporters are saying nothing is happening and the national media is running with the story that an offer has been made. The sources are probably from Schimdt's camp or from Shimdt's agent trying to drive the price up.

No, they just hired Steve Wilson, who lives in Taiwan, to restart their Asian scouting. They apparently don't see Igawa as worth the investment.

That is great news. I think Sean Marshall and/or Angel Guzman could do similar numbers to Igawa in 07, for cheaper contracts.

Hendry was probably too busy trying to fit room into the payroll for worse pitchers like Meche and Marquis.

 

(Not that I disagree with the decision to not spend $25 mil just for the posting fee for Igawa... I'm just wary of what crap Hendry wants to spend that money on)

Two lesser free agents in the rotation unless something happens with Schmidt that changes everybody's minds and allows him to come here. For now, they'll pencil Jones in center. If they can find a left-handed bat who can play CF, they'll try to trade Jones. The wild card is Pie. If he tells the Cubs he's ready (by his play, of course), he could be in CF sometime in 2007. The center-field situation is very fluid right now. I expect a lot of activity in Orlando next week.
