They mentioned the contract offer during the Bulls pregame on CSN. They probably got their info from the national stories but it at least kinda gives the story some local backing.

Not really. Because while they make a "competitive" offer, their best offer is still going to be significantly worse then the Cubs.

Comcast Sports Net "confirmed" our offer.

Should we be worried about the Cards in the race to sign Schmidt?

not really, unless the Cubs interest in him turns out to be false. If he's willing to leave the West Coast, the Cubs should be able to outbid the Cards for him. I don't see why the Cards want him anyway - just sign guys like Kip Wells or whoever off the scrap heap, and turn them into good pitchers.

the cardinals would be tough if they signed schmidt.

carpenter

schmidt

wainwright(whose k/bb ratio was eerily similar to carpenter)

reyes

wells

if duncan does what he normally does they will still be the team to beat, soriano or not we need pitching.

Do you honestly see the Cards offering a comparable deal to that of 3 yrs $44/45 mill the Cubs offer? I don't. The deal I see them making is 2 yrs $22/23 million. I don't see the Cards outbidding the Cubs.

If the Cubs are serious about Schmidt, I can't imagine getting outbid by St. Louis. Maybe he'll decide to stay west, but if he comes east for money, the Cubs should be able to offer more of that than St. Louis.

Did you honestly see anything in my post referring to the Cards? I was talking about the Cubs offer that both the Chicago Bruces say didn't happen.

You see...on one hand you get some people saying no offer has been made...then on the other hands....you have people saying an offer has been made. Right now, it's confusing on Jason Schmidt.

Kaplan on WGN radio tonight said the Cubs DID NOT offer Schmidt any kind of contract. He has his sources.

Kaplan also said that the "Floyd deal would be done by Monday", also....So go figure.

one of those two has a problem figuring out payroll too, for what that's worth.

do any of the cardinal fans here know what kind of money they have to spend after todays signings?

probably plenty... they only spent $7-8M today, I think.

yeah, their offense is pretty settled now. maybe a bench player or something, but other than loose parts they have payroll to drop it seems.

Kaplan is an unreliable source who has no history of ever being correct.

Let's go back on just the last few weeks. He said that the Cubs were close to signing Meche and a deal would be done in the next few days. That never happened. He said that the Floyd deal would be done a couple days ago. That also never happened. He said that Hendry's top priority in the offseason right after the regular season was Barry Zito. That turned out to be incorrect as well.

Kaplan is more of a fan rather than someone who you can take for a reliable source regarding rumors. His credibility equals the credibility that you and I have.

Hmm so we have like 10 different places saying the Cubs offered Schmidt the 3 year deal, then Bruce Levine says we never did...Were do these other places get that news from? Pretty big since its a headline on SI.com and on rotoworld.com

It's Bruce Miles, and all the other sites got their information from the San Fransisco Chronicle. They probably got their info from Schmidt's agent, which Bruce said was probably a false rumor that the agent thought up.

I doubt that SI.com and ESPN would have it as such big news if there was only a blurb about it in the San Francisco Chronicle. Rotoworld, yes, but not SI or ESPN.

Thats from the main baseball page from a reporter over at SI.com

Yea I wasn't aware Bruce Miles' word was absolute truth these days.

i wasn't aware john heyman's word was the absolute truth these days.

His "sources" are probably what was reported by Bruce Miles and Bruce Levine.

Did I miss something here? Are we supposed to be signing Floyd by Monday? Or is Floyd expected to be signed by some team by Monday?

I'm going to violate my own edict here and jump in on this thread one more, and last, time. To those who have PM'ed, I've tried to respond (in a nice way, of course), but I'm having trouble getting my messages through, and I've asked the Admin. for some help.

Nobody is the ultimate authority here. The Cubs may indeed land Schmidt eventually. That's not the issue here. All I said, and it's been corroborated by two different radio reports, is that the current information about an alleged offer to Schmidt, which was put out by national outlets, is not accurate at this moment to the best of my knowledge.

See you on other threads.
