Bob Nightengale was on Charley Steiner's XM radio show a couple of hours ago (noonish CT?). He said the pitching market was heating up and that he expected a slew of signings leading into and during the winter meetings. He expects Jason Schmidt to sign next week and said the Cubs were the favorites in his opinion. Seattle doesn't seem willing to match the dollar amounts being tossed around and, although the Dodgers seem interested, it's hard to gauge how interested they are.

Nightengale also said he thought Zito would sign later.

Please don't be basing this off of yesterday's reports...

Who's Bob Nightengale? Reliable? Is he a biased Cubs fan?

He's the baseball writer for USA Today, among other things. No Cubs bias either way that I'm aware of. He caught some flak from Cubs fans a few months ago when he wrote about Dusty's tenure in Chicago and the stacks of racist mail he received.

Westbrook?

Let's go one step at a time. Although if nothing gets done by Monday I'd like to see Hendry get two deals done next week. If not two pitchers, then a pitcher and a big bat.

But yes I think we've all decided that we like Westbrook as a 4 starter.

The other M you're looking for is "Marmol"

That would be Carlos Marmol, Cuse.

EDIT* I should've known that by the time I logged in to answer that, I'd be too late! :?

According Jim Street, Schmidt will likely sign with either the Mariners or Dodgers.

Contrary to published reports, the Cubs have not made the right-hander an offer and it still appears that he will sign with either the Los Angeles Dodgers or Mariners. From all indications, Schmidt wants to continue his career on the West Coast.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported on Wednesday that the Mariners remain the front-runner to land Schmidt, who lives in Kelso, Wash., which is about a two-hour drive south of Safeco Field. He already has told the Yankees that he's not interested, and ignore the three-year, $45 million offer the Cubs supposedly put on the table.

The Mariners have at least two spots in their rotation to fill and appear to be getting a little antsy with not being able to fill either one.

Here's what the Seattle article referred to in Street's article says.

John Hickey / The Seattle Post-Intelligence"] The news just keeps getting worse for the Mariners. They haven't signed a free-agent starting pitcher, nor are they particularly close to doing so. ...

Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said Tuesday, "I wouldn't say we're close" to adding the help the club is looking for, and he is perfectly willing to trade if free agency prices the Mariners out. But there are problems with the trade option, too. The field is crowded -- about a dozen teams are actively searching for starting pitching. ...

Seattle remains the front-runner to land free agent Jason Schmidt from Kelso. Schmidt has let it be known he wants to stay on the West Coast.

Schmidt has ruled out going to New York, and even while the Cubs have offered him three years for $44 million, Chicago is probably too far from his home.

That's a lot of money to ignore if it's true. He must be getting close to or over 13 from those 2 teams then. I hope he goes to Seattle out of the 2.

The Seattle article sounds like speculation to me.

ETA: The mlb article doesn't make much sense -- 'The Cubs didn't make an offer, and Schmidt is ignoring the offer they didn't make.'

I didn't see this quoted earlier -- here's Bruce's take from today's Daily Herald.

Bruce Miles / The Daily Herald"] Despite a flurry of national reports Tuesday, Cubs insiders vehemently deny they’ve offered free-agent pitcher Jason Schmidt a three-year, $45 million deal.

That doesn’t mean the Cubs aren’t interested in Schmidt or that they won’t make an offer. But they need two starting pitchers, and it’s more likely they’ll come from a pool that includes Gil Meche, Vicente Padilla, Jake Westbrook and Jason Marquis.

Westbrook is a trade candidate, but Cleveland has shown little interest in moving him. Hendry will talk trade with other teams in Orlando, and he will keep an eye on the free agents during what should be a busy week.

“I expect the pitching market to pick up in Orlando,” Hendry said Tuesday.

Maybe not what I'd prefer to hear ... but I'd rather keep it realistic.

Bruce also mentions a few caveats on Schmidt.
