Congrats to Hendry for getting this done and for less money than I would have thought 16 hours ago.

This team was still about the worst team in baseball last year and there's still a long long way to go.

This is some seriously good news, for a change.

Not only do we have Aramis back, but I feel this gives us a shot at having a productive offseason. If Aramis left, I was really afraid it would snowball into *nothing* getting done.

Kaplan just reported that the Angels were going to offer 100MM for 6-7 years today. ARam stuck with the Cubs knowing that.

I know everyone likes to rip Hendry saying that while he may be a nice guy and honest, that has no place in baseball. Obviously it does. It kept our best bat at below market value...way below market value.

Oh, and there is no opt out clause this time. 8)

He did get a partial no trade clause though. <--- I know Tim wanted to know that.

Is that because Hendry is a nice guy, or because Aramis loves us almost as much as we love him?

YES! From fox sports:

Rather than test free agency, third baseman Aramis Ramirez has decided to remain with the Chicago Cubs.

Ramirez, 28, has agreed to a five-year contract with a vesting option, FOXSports.com has learned. While exact terms of the deal were not immediately available, it was believed to be for at least $70 million.

Just in time, too.

well I bumped the bad news last night, so I'll bump the good news today.

I'm reminded of Dumb and Dumber after Jim Carey sells the van for the scooter. Hendry redeems himself.

the sounds of that story is the signing came before the deadline. does this mean the Cubs keep the chance to sign that additional type A?

I'm excited, thrilled, happy, all that stuff about this deal. It is a great deal for the Cubs.

That said, let's not go nuts and think Hendry is a good GM. He still put together the worst team in the NL with a $94M payroll last year. He has a long way to go to correct the problems he has, in large part, created the last 3 years.

I don't know, but if Hendry was a dishonest shark, I doubt this deal gets done. He would have burned his good will with ARam long ago.

Aramis is just too lazy to be bothered to look for new in-season digs in SoCal.

(Yes, it's a JOKE, I'm thrilled he's back!)

Carrie Muskat was on XM about an hour or so ago and made it sound as though the agreement came this morning vs. last night. She said they were close last night but "crossed the t's and dotted the i's" today ... for whatever that's worth.

I hope not... not for the money he's going to command, at least.

And that was just a starting deal. I said, somebody would give Aramis 100M.

I'll apologize to Hendry for now. For the moment, he's vindicated by not letting Aramis walk away.

But there's still a whole off season to go.

Carrie Muskat / Cubs.com[/url]"] The Cubs reached agreement Sunday on a five-year, $73 million contract for Ramirez, and avoided losing the third baseman to free agency. Wood, also a free agent, signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Cubs.

Dollar-wise, Ramirez's contract is the largest given to a Cubs player since Sammy Sosa signed a four-year, $72 million deal in March 2001. Derrek Lee agreed to a five-year, $65 million contract in April this year. ...

The Cubs had exclusive rights until midnight Saturday to reach a new deal with Ramirez, and finalized the details of the contract on Sunday. ...

Ramirez had made it clear to Hendry that Chicago was home.

"A lot of times, there was an image being portrayed that he wanted out and didn't want to stay," Hendry said. "When he and I spoke at the end of the year, I felt he really wanted to be here. It makes us feel good because it's a trust factor. Not only does he like it here, but he has faith that things will get better."

So he counts as a Type A signing?

I don't know the rules on that.

However you cannot argue, we have started this offseason on a high note. Improved manager and coaching staff. A much improved hitting coach, and got some good deals on Miller, Wood, and Ram. Now it's time to bring in the new guys.

It's still a team coming off a nightmare season, and we have so far resigned players who were a part of that ballclub. Let's not overreact here and start celebrating or anything.

As for improvements to the coaching staff, that remains to be seen. How many "good" managers and coaches from elsewhere have we brought in only to find out they stunk? Rothschild, anyone? How about Mr. World-Series himself, Dusty Baker?

Nothing can be said about Piniella and his staff, other than they are now here and it won't be the same as when they were elsewhere.

This was something that I thought would always get done. And I'm glad it did. But its just the beginning.

Whereas the Cubs did finish with the worst record in the NL and had a $94 million payroll, it seems some people continue to forget that Derrek Lee hardly played last season and Mark Prior, who previously had been injured mostly by flukes, disappeared completely as well. Those are the Cubs two best players. Take Pujols and Carpenter off the Cardinals and they are going to have a hard time getting over .500, too.

So, I don't think the Cubs when their best players are healthy are actually the worst team in baseball. That, like so much else in this thread, is an overstatement. Don't get me wrong, Hendry still has a lot of work to do. I would start with J.D. Drew in CF and possibly Iwamura to play 2B if the Cubs bid on him. After that, get the best starters you can and call it an off season. How much of that will actually happen? Will have to wait and see.

Maybe next time, we'll actually wait before we think we see.

Way to get it done, Jim. Great contract. Now spend the savings on Drew and the best starters you can get.

Please do no compare Gerald Perry (a GOOD hitting coach) with our previous coach or Lou Piniella (a GOOD manager) with Dusty Baker.
