Who do you think the Cubs would get? I would want Van Joshua for HC and after hearing the "score rumor" I think I would warm up to giving Ryne Sandberg a shot at 1B. I can say one thing. It's an improvement and I am glad to finally see those loafs of coaches finally gone. . We've got the hugest problem coaches spots of last year still to fill. With the Sarge and Gene Clines. Anybody would be better than them. But the HC especially is a very important spot for the Cubs. They need someone to teach patience and help the hitters to be more selective. .

Was there any validity to the Ryno rumor, or just speculation?

I don't know, could anybody who heard the Murph show tell us the gist of what was said. Or was it just Murph "I think Sandberg will be the new 1st base coach". .?

I like Jackson a little more than Chambliss for hitting coach. Those are really the only 2 choices I can think of that I like. I do love Von Joshua, but again, he is more valuable in the minors.

1B coach doesn't matter much, but I wouldn't mind a guy like Listach in that role. Jody would be interesting too.

Wouldn't Von Joshua be more valuable in the big leagues? By all accounts he's a quality teacher. And Uncle Lou is the type of skipper who would smack a guys hat off if a coach said he wasn't listening.

Don't you think Von Joshua might deserve a shot at developing big league talent in the show? Maybe if we're stuck with Pierre, Von Joshua can actually teach him patience.

If we're going to have Theriot at the top of the lineup, I'd like Von Joshua there coaching him.

Ryno for first base.

The coaching list is looking a lot like the "Look again" POY candidates

Steve Lyons thinks otherwise.

The Cubs last 3 manager hires have been minorities and have had a minority dominated coaching staff for the last 4 years.

Guys like Chambliss and Jackson have preached patience in a similar manner to Joshua and have had big league success while Von Joshua has shown success in teaching minor leaguers. I think Joshua is more valuable to the Cubs working in the minors. No doubt he deserves to get back to the big leagues (I don't think he should have been fired from the White Sox).

And yes, I'm partial to Jackson over Chambliss.

he mentioned it on his show during my lunch hour but the way he said it makes me think he might know something from the inside. it might have something to do with ryno calling hendry about managing and ryno saying that he wants to get back into baseball again. he said it like it was a done deal but also said that it was his opinion.

if nothing comes of it then i will just write him off as being another radio goof.

I mean, the in-game role of a 1B coach doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but somebody like Ryne Sandberg would seemingly have a great deal of wisdom to impart to young players in regard to hitting, fielding, work ethic, and just playing all around smart baseball. Ryno was a stellar player in every facet of the game, and I have to believe he'd be valuable to this team.

Just how rigidly defined are the coaching duties? Can the 1B coach also be infield coach/assistant hitting coach, or something along those lines?

I would totally like the Cubs make Ryno the Mr. Miyagi to Ryan Theriot's Daniel-san, regardless of his offical title.

The 1B coach can always assist in areas where he can provide knowledge. Clines and Sarge offered hitting advice while at 1B, Alomar was working with Patterson on bunting, as well as on every other team the 1B coach goes beyond the in-game duties of a 1B coach.

So, we're close to replacing the driver, but the Car Dealer, the Bank, and the Car itself remain the same.

If you've got a rusty old Dodge Neon, would it matter if you changed from Dick Trickle to Jeff Gordon?

Maybe a little :)

OK, that's my analogy for the day...
