Watching ESPN...and already sick of hearing him called Die-SOOkie.

Soriano

Zito

Schmidt

Lee

Mats

I have no idea what this is.

It's the board of FA's that the BBTN guys put up on Sportscenter. I wasn't even really paying attention and about 5 times I stopped and thought "hey, what he just said is completely false". That's what I get for not flipping over after the Rutgers-Louisville game.

How ESPN ranked the top free agents (including Matsuzaka as a FA) when I turned it on after reading your post. They said Soriano was in a class all of his own.

If the deadline is Wednesday why are they going to announce it tonight? Unless I missed the post saying they would

the deadline is four business days from wednesday at 4 pm local time.

they're almost certainly not going to announce their decision tonight, but it's not like i need a lot of prodding to stay up all night when i'm already drinking and i don't have class tomorrow.

Ah, so it's an ESPN thing. I was trying to figure how a list of names was related to my annoyance at the mispronunciation of Daisuke's name.

Supposedly their BOD met today (Japan's Friday) and if we are going to hear something its going to come at about 1 AM our time.

I'm sure this has been covered, but I'm not going through 60 pages.

Wouldn't it be smarter to take the Matsuzaka money and sign a couple of mid-level starters?

i too think this is the way to go. they could probably get iwaga, iwamura and roberts for the price of matsuzaka alone.

You guys haven't seen his stuff. All his stuff is plus kinda stuff...

He's zambrano and more. Worth paying 25 million (which is off payroll btw) and a three year contract.

Worth way more than Zito or Schmidt...and he's younger.

I can't stand it any more...can someone fly to Tokyo please?

so was hideki arabu before he started pitching for the yankes. i have seen clips of him on youtube and his fastball is much straighter than z's.

His fastball's not his best pitch. He throws five pitches...all for strikes, he's 26...and better than the options avail and discounting the posting fee, will be less of a risk because Boras will focus on a three year contract...

I hope the Cubs win the bid.

It's off payroll only to the extent of the luxury tax.

Really? I thought it was actually ok for once. Gammons described Carlos Lee as not a great hitter but not a good, for he has not even hit a 900 OPS once in his career. Schmidt they said with his velocity changing could be a risk. For Daisuke, they described his great stuff, and then said the main concern is his number of IP. Zito, the main thing they talked about was his durability. The only reason they put Soriano above everyone else is his flexibility to play different positions, and his value for many different clubs because of that, along with his physical skills. It was all basic information, but they seemed to cover it pretty well for the uninformed.

Well, since we are waiting, lets play GM. If you were the Cubs, what would your bid be. I thought all along that 28mm would do it. If they placed a bid of 28mm, and lost, I would be fine with that.

A second-hand report from an impeccable source:

Just saw this in one of the Japanese sports dailies ten minutes ago, literally hot off the press (the delivery guy was putting the freshly-printed papers in the stacks at the store):

"Matsuzaka: Unexpectedly Cheap at 1.6 Billion!"

Y1,600,000,000 is just over $13,000,000. Can that possibly be all it took to sign him?

Following this were some brief comments about how exorbitant salary demands from Boras put teams off bidding higher.

If so, please let it be the Cubs!
