Looks like the Dodgers have dropped out of the bidding as well.

The Dodgers do not plan to submit a bid for the right to negotiate with Japanese right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, but that doesn't mean they won't aggressively pursue top-tier free agents this off-season.

"The posting money is a detriment to me," Colletti said. "You're going to have to invest a lot of money before you even talk about a contract."

Geez, we might even have a shot at landing him at this point. Kuroda seems like he may/may not be staying in Japan, so maybe the Cubs will submit a serious bid for Matsuzaka instead of going for that rare 4th starter. 8)

Who are the other serious players in this? The Yanks, Red Sox, and Mets. Any others?

NYY, TEX, BOS, CHC, and the Mets also have interest.

According to ESPN this morning the Rangers are players too.

He's still my number one choice. I would love it if the Cubs bid big for him. I say 23 million for the right to negotiate and a 6/55 contract.

Realistic?

The 23 mill might not get it done with the Yanks in the picture, though.

I don't see him getting 6/55.

Does anyone know when the winning bidder will be announced?

I want to say sometime Monday...

For some reason I so want the Cubs to get this guy. He seems like a can't miss, but I don't really care. I just want them to win something, a bidding war, checkers, anything.

I am fired up.

Yeah, and with the field having dwindled down like it has, we're actually in a position where we could take this one.

From what I can tell, it's essentially down to the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Rangers, and us. And 25 mil looks like it might get it done.

Someone has brought that up in the past, probably even this thread. The commissioner's office would probably get involved if someone made a very large posting bid without genuine intent to sign Matsuzaka to a decent deal.

I guess the question would be what qualified for a genuine interest in signing him.

Would offering Matsuzuka a 6/30 deal qualify as genuine? I don't know and I don't know if the commisioner would agree or not.

Definitely, Daisuke has no room to complain about a 6/30 deal.

That wouldn't be a bad deal for a team. Submit a 50 million posting fee and then offer Daisuke 6/30. At worst, you have him for a cost of 80 million which is like 13 million a season. That's cheaper than offering a 30 million posting fee and then paying him 10 million a season.

He may turn it down, but then he's kept from signing elsewhere. The only damage may be that he won't negotiate with that team when he returns as a FA next season.

That's not taking advantage of the system though. If a team won with a 30 million bid, they could (and should) offer him a deal like that. Look at Ichiro for an example of a posted player's initial contract.

What was his initial contract?

I feel the same way. It's sad that we have to hope for these little victories to get excited about when it comes to the Cubs. :x

I don't know. When was the last time the Cubs signed THE top-tier FA on the market? Or at least the top foriegn one?

I think Hicks will make a 30 million bid. We should bid 30 million + one dollar.

Am I completely off my rocker for thinking that Hicks would be a little more timid about throwing money around after the ARod contract crippled his team?

I just don't see Texas going for more than about 22-23 million.

I think it was 3yrs $14M

Hicks has proved that he will spend money to improve his team. The Cubs have yet to do that with a BIG time player. They spend it on use to be, or maybe could be, but not on big money, big result players. Which I think keeps alot of fans on the pessimistic roster.

I still see no reason to thing the Yankees won't win this. Money is obviously no object, and there's widespread belief the process is fixed, anyway. They certainly wouldn't fix it in favor of the Cubs.
