A Dallas Morning News article raised the injury and pitching abuse issue.

Link.

Here's the line on his final three high school appearances: 17 innings and 250 pitches the first day.a save the next and a no-hitter on the third.

And then this to sum it up.

A man who has pitched 1,402 innings, 500 more than Kerry Wood at the same age, probably should be regarded warily.

I think this is a legit concern. The 500 innings more than Wood, doesn't say too much given his workload the past 3 seasons, but the amount of abuse Wood took before even being drafted might be similar. No FA pitcher is a lock, and Matsuzaka is a bigger investment than any other pitcher if you include the posting fee.

Winning him will be great, but losing him will not be the end of the world unless the Cards somehow got him :-)

I dont know much about Matsuzaka, but if he has mechanics like Wood, then I think it would be a huge concern.

if he has mechanics like wood, he would probably have already gotten hurt. he stops at the top of his windup, so its not likely he is as violent.

I think Zito is near breakdown as well. I am also not convinced he will look as good playing in a park where flyballs leave the park more regularly.

Completely, completely agree. Zito just gives up so many big flyballs that I think any smaller park (or team without great outfield defense) is gonna lead to the ERA hitting 4.50 without any bad luck.

Adding Cubs bad luck to that would put it at around 6.00, right?

Early reports appear to indicate that the Rangers may have submitted the highest bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka.

An emailer just wrote in to tell me that 1310 Sports Radio in Dallas reported that Texas posted the highest bid, estimated to be around $25MM.

In addition, I'm hearing that Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 reported that the Cubs did not win the bidding.

We'll see if we can get a few more sources to confirm this preliminary info.

this web site is not all that reliable but it wouldn't surprise me. Has any one heard Bruce Levine on am 1000 to confirm this?

I realize that the Cubs need to take some risk, but necessarily risks, but not unnecessarily risk. And for somebody to have that kind of mileage at such a young age, is definately a cause for concern. You know what...as much as this may not be popular, but I kinda hoping the Cubs don't win this bid. For some reason, Matsuzaka is going to flame out as in the majors (not hating, just going by the history of Japanese pitchers in the majors). I remember Contreras recieving similar hype (I know he was significantly older, and the chances of his continue his Cuban dominance in the majors, were unlikely) and Contreras hasn't exactly set the majors on fire.

And if the rumors are true and the Rangers won the bid, I actually feel bad for him, considering, I see him putting up CH Park type numbers in Texas, with his overall numbers being solid, but not worth the money he is getting.

It looks like they might have pulled that story from their website. So my guess is that it was bad info.

It must really be unreliable if mlbtraderumors pulled the story.

maybe they are not true because its no longer on mlbtraderumors any more. It wouldn't be the first time that site has jumped the gun and probably won't be the last either.

Email him and say WGN Radio reported the Cubs posted $30Million. I bet he posts it on his site.

The major-league commissioner's office, which opened the bidding last Thursday, informed the Japanese commissioner's office of the amount of the highest bid but not the club that made the offer. The team and the amount will be revealed only if the Lions accept the offer.

Seibu has until Tuesday to make its decision.

This makes it sound like we could be waiting until Tuesday depending on how long Seibu wants to drag this out.
