If the Cardinals dont make the playoffs that would be worse than about anything the Cubs have ever done. If it was anyone except Houston I would be really happy. Since it is Houston only mildly happy.

No way, man.

The Cardinals are hurting, it's not the Cardinals team that went to the WS two years ago.

The Cubs have had far more ridiculously embarrassing seasons, moments, decades. Hell, we're working on a century.

At least Card fans wouldn't really be able to mention ' 69 though would they?

It's only going to take around what...83-84 wins to win this division. Horrible.

It scares me to think of how little activity we might see in the off-season as Hendry will probably think that he only needs to build an 85-win team to take the division.

Urgh....I dunno how much more I can take of Clemens.

he's a major tool and has a habit of retiring too often but the man sure can pitch. a 2.35 era so far this year and a 1.87 last year. he could very easily have had 2 more cy youngs to add to his trophy case.

Yeah if I were a Cards fan I'd be pretty nervous. I imagine TLR's sphincter is pretty darn tight these days.

But there is some cause for optimism for the Cards: Their slump reminds me of the White Sox late season scare a year ago, when the Indians came on like gangbusters. And look what happened in the post-season. The whole "momentum going into the playoffs" thing is a myth.

The difference is the White Sox finished with 99 wins while the Cards will finish with, at most, 87 wins. The 2005 Sox had a solid team while the 2006 Cards don't.

No question about it, but as Billy Beane said: "My job is to get my team into the playoffs. What happens after that is a g**d*** crapshoot."

Houston won again tonight, and the Cards are currently down a run in the bottom of the 7th. The Stros will be just 1.5 games out if the Padres hold on tonight.

Sad thing is, as the Cards collapse (Carp just gave up 2 more, 6-5 Padres), it really means nothing. It's not like this is the 04 or 05 Cards that had a legit shot at winning it all. Seeing those teams collapse would have been great fun. Watching this team crumble means nothing, since they'll do it next week against the Dodgers or Padres in the LDS anyway.

All this inevitable collapse means is denying another Division Championship for STL. Not quite as devastating, considering the crap year this division is. Hell, I think STL would prefer an embarassing regular season finale as opposed to a humiliating postseason appearance.

And this is nothing like the '69 Cubs. That team was good, and coulda/shouda/woulda won it all. Again, this Cards team probably couldn't win the International or Pacific League Championships!

Just wanted to use this thread to point out that Gary Bennett is 2-19 since his huge series against the Cubs, including 0 for his last 16

I just want to see a White Sox and Cardinals free playoffs for my own sanity

It's official, Cards lose. Down to 1½ games.

Frankly, I don't care if the Cardinals would most likely make a quick exit from the playoffs, if this holds up, it would be an historically monumental collapse.

No kidding. For all the talk about the Cards blowing their window, if anything we've done just as bad with this horribly weak division.

At least my predictions for how weak the division this year turned out to be right.

Over their last 10 games:

Cardinals: 2-8

Astros: 8-2

Wow.

The really funny part is that the Reds are 2.5 back!

If the Stros catch the Cards, I'll be rootin' for those pesky Reds! I hate the Astros!

To me the whole thing is depressing. It just points out that the division was there for the taking if the Cubs just had a decent team. If they had the talent from 2003 or 2004 they would have won the division going away. :(
