I just watched the replay of Saturday's 5th inning. It was a foul tip right in the cajones. You could see him swearing afterword. Not pretty.

This is quickly becoming a legendary thread (in a bad way) in NSBB history and we're not even through 40 posts yet.

The Cubs' usual team of Expert Medical/Training Advisors worked their usual magic on this one.

Deadline story from the Sun-Times

Barrett Banged Up: Cubs catcher Michael Barrett had to leave the game Saturday after the fifth inning.

He had gotten hit in the groin by a batter's foul tip earlier. O'Neal said he didn't think the injury was too serious.

''He just felt sick to his stomach and wanted out,'' O'Neal said.

Next Day on Cubs.com.

Notes: Barrett on DL after surgery CHICAGO -- The Cubs' injuries continued to mount as catcher Michael Barrett was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with an intrascrotal hematoma...

Barrett was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital Saturday, and an ultrasound revealed the injury. He then underwent surgery, Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said. Is Barrett done for the season?

"We don't know yet," O'Neal said Sunday. "We have to see how he responds and have to see with the swelling. We're definitely sure he'll miss two to three weeks, and we'll have to see."

ESPN's Take Today

Barrett was injured by Matt Cain's foul tip in the fifth inning Saturday. He left the game after batting the next half-inning. Barrett went to the emergency room and an ultrasound showed bleeding inside his scrotum. Surgery took less than an hour, O'Neal said.

"He had enough of a bleed that it needed to be addressed surgically," O'Neal said. "Guys get hit a lot. You see guys get hit and very rarely does it get to this extreme."

Barrett felt ill after his at-bat in the fifth. Cubs manager Dusty Baker said no one knew Barrett was hurt during Cain's at-bat.

"He went down [after his at-bat] and said, 'Bake, I'm feeling sick man. This is hurting badly,"' Baker said. "So I said, 'OK, go see the doctor.' He tried to tough it out."

----

Good thing Barrett has seen enough pitchers go down to know to ignore any medical advice he gets at Wrigley Field (especially given that no one noticed when he was hurt or had any clue that it might be serious ... though I'd guess that if O'Neal had an intrascrotal hematoma that required surgery, he might deign to classify it as "serious"). I'm glad Barrett hauled butt and everything to the hospital instead.

I know there's some humor to be had, but -- seriously -- this team is a complete joke and basically everyone needs to be fired.

(not to kill the thread or anything ... After all, Barrett might get better followup advice here than he will from the Cubs)

This was the description on the yahoo player information:

Sep 3 Chicago Cubs C Michael Barrett (groin) could miss the remainder of the season, after having been hit in the groin with a foul tip, according to the Associated Press. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and in a best-case scenario, could miss between two and three weeks. Barrett was scheduled to be released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Sunday, Sept. 3, after having undergone surgery. The injury occured during the top of the fifth inning, Saturday, Sept. 2, when San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain fouled a ball off. However, Barrett didn't leave the game until after his at-bat in the bottom of the inning. Barrett went to the emergency room, and an ultrasound showed bleeding inside his scrotum. Surgery took less than an hour, according to trainer Mark O'Neal.

Uh, don't they normally not going into that much detail when it's an injury to a sensitive area? Wouldn't "groin injury" have sufficed?

Nope. If they had said groin injury, it would have led most to believe an injury involving the groin muscles. This is a nut injury.

In complete seriousness, does this have any non-baseball consequences for Barrett in the future? Any "family-related" consequences?

Considering they took care of the problem immediately, I'd imagine he'll be fine after some rest and relaxation. He'll be good to go for next season, imo.

However, his poor wife is going to have to tough things out while he's recovering.

I don't think so, from my painful experience the ball broke a blood vessel in the area and it bled. It's like a bruise on your skin except the blood vessels in the area are much bigger and the bleeding doesn't stop as fast. As long as things weren't detached he will be able to reproduce.

BTW the ultrasound in that area is a very weird sensation. They put this viscus jell on everything and then.... well you get the picture.

Barrett was still in the hospital this morning. He apparently needed another unspecified procedure done. They mentioned on the pre-game show that he was expected to return home today, but I haven't heard whether that happened.

So there are fringe benefits?

From personal experience where a tubeule had to be reattached, according to the doctor, everything should work quite well.

On the wife front as long as she dosent mind doing the work in about a week everything should be go to go. In a manner of speaking.

Trying to be very delicate here. Its the sudden stop that will be tricky for at least two weeks if not a little longer.

I could still tweak myself hitting fungos about a month after my surgery. I cant see trying to hit a inside pitch and having to turn on it.
