Len Kasper was interviewed by a sports radio station in Milwaukee this morning. It was very interesting. Len talked quite a bit about the importance of OBP, and how OBP and slugging win games not "small ball." He and one of the hosts got into it about Ned Yost, and Len use very-much Sabermetric thinking in presenting his case. At the end of the interview the host said Len was one of the most entertaining guests they have had on the show. In any case, I found it interesting. I checked and it's archived on their website at http://www.sportsradio1250.com if you want to check it out.

Don't tell that to Fat Man Hendry.

Ned Youst is a solid baseball man.

Kasper has been around the game from broadcasting and knows OBP and Slugging are keys to an effective offensive game.

No one is fooled anymore..not even the Cubs fan base.

We know garbage when we see it.

From Dusty's little league philosophy of "no - Walks"

To Hendry's Dumpster Diving aquistions the latest being Iszturis....

Cub nation is fed up. Fed up with this crap. We are the best fans in the world

and we have the worst GM in pro sports and the worst manager in pro sports guiding are beloved Cubs into the toilet!

Listening now, this is great. I love Len, and I've never said that before. He's freaking great. Len and Bruce are going to be batman and robin attempting to straighten out the jokers in the front office.

Lenny Bruce baby!

Oh gosh, this is gonna get me in trouble, but...

Cubs fans are not the best in the world. We are great fans, no doubt. We are NOT the best in the world. How do you even quantify that? Because we sell out every game, even though we're horrible? Because we question each and every move that our front office and manager make?

As much as I hate to say it, we aren't any better than Cardinals fans. We're no better than Red Sox fans. We're no better than Yankee fans. We're definitely up there, and among the best, but I think saying we're the best is very egocentric.

Sorry for the semantical rant. We are great fans, no doubt. The best? How can you say?

Live at the Cubskills it's Lenny Bruce!!!

I think Hendry is just as stubburn as Baker it's time for both to take their swinging ways somewhere else. There's no way a newspaper guy and a broadcaster can know more than a GM and manager. This is Mr. Hendry's thinking and will continue to sink the Cubs into the depth of loserville.

I liked the interview and wish that Hendry and Baker understood baseball as much as our announcer did.

I go to some A ball games in Peoria and other places. My dad is a Tiger fan so we go to some West Michigan games when they are close. I always wondered why in A ball you have like 3 coaches per team max. It would seem to me that A ball is where you would want 6 caoches and by the time they get to Major Leagues than you would only need 3 or 4. I think Kasper makes some good points about the importance of coaches and managers. Really what would some other manager done with the Cubs this year. Maybe got Rusch out to the starting rotation earlier and taken Pierre out of the lead-off role when he was sucking. This isnt a defense of Dusty because I do think he is a bad manager I just think sometimes we do overhype his importance to the grand scheme of things. He hasnt really done anything different lately, like Kasper said all of a sudden we have some hot hitters and the pitching is keeping us in ballgames.

I think my overhype is in direct response to Dusty, Hendry and others overhyping the importance of Dusty. People thought he could make the difference, which was absurd. You need the players, not a big name $4m manager. They foolishly thought the problem with the Cubs was a losing mentality, completely ignoring their losing philosophy. But Baker does inflict damage and make things worse.

IZZY Mandelbaum: How 'bout that, huh? The World's Greatest Dad. My son made it for me.

JERRY Seinfeld: That's very nice.

IZZY Mandelbaum: The best in the world. (pointing to himself) Which means I'm better than just number one.

JERRY Seinfeld : Well, I don't know how official any of these rankings really are.

You ever catch some of the Tigers' farm teams in action? Preston Larison, a buddy from high school, pitches in their farm system.

Actually, hardcore Brewer fans can't stand Ned Yost. They view him almost as badly as we view Dusty.

While I haven't followed the Brewers enough to have any real opinion on Ned Yost one way or another, some of the stuff I've read about him makes a pretty good case that he is a clueless putz.

Then again, take a manager of a losing team that is in his third year (or longer) at the helm and you'll find a segment of that team's fanbase that wants him burned at the stake. Bobby Cox is one of the most successful managers ever and I bet there are not a few Brave fans calling for his head.

He could be. Frankly I think managers in general are overrated, and since many of them are old time baseball men who hold onto the beliefs that formed the foundation of what is now conventional wisdom, a lot of them probably do more harm than good. But when I hear a guy rip a manager because his players don't bunt enough, well, I have my doubts. By and large, managers should not try to "make something happen". It's when Dusty acts that he is at his worst. Double switches, hit and runs, sac bunts, all this stuff usually hurts the teams chances. The few times they work do not make up for the many times they fail. The one obvious exception is when he doesn't act, ie. taking out starting pitchers. But then again, you could characterize "taking care" of pitchers as a sort of action.

I think it was just hyperbole. How can anything as subjective as "the best fans in the world" be qualified in the first place?

It's easy really.

First someone who can't possibly back up anything they write says it (Cardinals nation thanks whoever the guy at SI was), then a fan base runs with it and starts referring to themselves as TBFIB, and then whenever anyone points out the complete inability to measure or prove something like this you just laugh and call them jealous.

Len Kasper for Team President.

Bruce Miles for GM.

Bob Brenly for manager.

You were going so well until that last one.

Well, I figure that Kasper and Miles can set up the right team and acquire the right players for Brenly to manage. And since Brenly and Kasper worked in the booth together for a couple years, they are on the same page and have a good relationship so Brenly would listen to Kasper.
