I'm not saying signing ARam is stupid, IMO he'd be the most desirable FA position player on the market. I think giving him a ridiculous contract because a GM feels like they have to is stupid.

Who says he doesn't have to? He does. Aramis is more important to the Cubs than any other team I can think of. If he is gone they will have one legitmate power hitter in the line up. Add in the fact that they will also have to replace a position in which there isn't a whole lot of talent avaliable.

Losing Aramis could set up a cascade of bad trades in an effort to replace him.

Aramis has to be resigned even if it costs the Cubs.

Aramis deserves a big contract.

Yep. Hopefully, we get a bit of a break, but we'll see. He could prevent us from getting that #2 starter we need.

Offer A-Ram the best deal you can afford. Too me that's $12-$13 mil. per for 4-5 years.

Either he wants to stay with the Cubs, or he's looking to maximize his value. If it's the former, any reasonable offer should land him. If it's the latter, the only way you sign him is to overpay.

Does any think the Cubs should overpay given all of the other deficiencies on this team?

That's what worries me is that this and Pierre would be Hendry's big "free agent" signings.

I don't doubt it, but just shoot me if it's so. Hendry's gotta feel like his job is on the line though.

My guess is he resigns A-Ram, locks up Zambrano & Barrett, signs Pierre (3/20), W. Miller (1/6), Wood (1/6), Suppan and a bat like Craig Wilson. In other words, woefully short of turning this into a contending team.

A Pierre signing is the first domino. After slappy is signed, the only way to save the off season is a blockbuster deal for Tejada or Cabrera.

I could see Pierre going for that much. It would be stupid, but I can see it. I can't see (nor do I want to see) Wood or Miller getting 6 mil with the type of injury concerns they both have.

I think that $6 mil. is the upper range for each of them. And obviously (though I didn't say it) most of that has to be based on incentives.

I think Wood might be worth the gamble if you think he can work in the pen - and particularly if you think there's any chance he makes it back into the rotation.

Miller, I'm not so sure about, though he's looked decent in his last couple of starts.

The trouble I see is that you can't have Wood, Prior, and Miller all signed - there's just too much risk that all three don't contribute in 2007.

I agree, he deserves a big contract. My only point is the deals a club feels like they have to make are often the ones that end up haunting them the most. Depending on the contract size it'll be tough to blame Hendry if he goes elsewhere.

It would not, however, be tough to blame him if he is not properly replaced. If Ramirez gets $100m somewhere, there's not much you can do. But Hendry put himself in a position where he is desperate to resign Ramirez, so it's his responsibility to get the job done. Or else he's got to pull off a masterstroke in another move.

True, I guess it depends on the Cubs goals for contending next year. In fact if I were Hendry the ARam situation might help those goals. With Aram and a few more decent moves I could see the Cubs contending next year since the NLC is so bad.

I hate hearing the phrase "a few decent moves" in regards to what the Cubs need to do in the offseason. Don't get me wrong, it's the truth. It just doesn't bode well for the Cubs next year when you need more than a move or two in the offseason to help the team contend. The add in the fact that the Cubs were 5 outs from the World Series just three seasons ago and now they are likely going to have the worst record in the National League.

There's one thing Cards and Cub fans can agree on...

Thank Jeebus we play in the NLC.

Well the Cubs don't actually play baseball. So, oh well. .

I think with the lack of free agent impact bats, especially 3rd baseman that can hit, Ramirez would be foolish to sign with the Cubs before testing the waters. It's just not good business unless the Cubs throw out a 15 per for 4.

Barry Rozner won't shed a tear if Ram leaves:

And am I the only one, by the way, who wouldn’t shed a tear if Ramirez left?

Ramirez has lived up to the reputation he brought from Pittsburgh, which is average defense and a good bat when the season is over.

Sounds very much like a close friend of his who spent many a year wearing out a patch of grass in right field.

Ouch!

The Cubs haven't been in a playoff race since '04. In September '04 while the rest of the team was collapsing Ramirez hit .326/.423/.589 I'n '03, Ramirez was having a very middling season unstil August and September came around with him on a playoff chasing team going down the stretch where he put up lines of .272/.342/.544 and .270/.324/.510(both out performing his season line) There's also the 250 /365/ .591 he put up in the playoffs. But clearly Rozner hasn't put any thought into his article so more simply said.

To compare him to Sammy is just flat out wrong. Get a clue Rozner...

Seems to me that Aram has played great D since coming over. And his power numbers speak for themselves, no matter when he produced them.

They used to say that without Dawson, the Cubs would've finished '87 in AAA. Take away Aram and Z and the Cubs would be hard pressed to be .500 in AA this season.

Letting him go is just not an option.

Anyone else feel that if we don't sign RAM, Hendry will go after Normar to play 3rd? I just have that feeling...

Uh, no. Your feeling may be the dinner you had last night ;)

Ummm...Sure dude. That might be it.

It wouldn't surprise me. I'd assume Nomar wants to stay in CA, but he seems to like Chicago, and money talks.
