If Ramirez does leave, the Cubs should make an all-out push to acquire Cabrera. He's the one player who could make up for the loss of Aramis.

If it took three pitchers to get Pierre, I don't even want to think what they would want for Cabrera. Prior, Hill, Pie and Cedeno?

If that is all it would take I'd do it.

I think it would take much more than that.

Prior will make about as much as Cabrera next year, so I doubt they'd want him in any deal.

I would guess they'd want Hill, Pie, Patterson and Veal.

I would do it in a second.

If the Cubs offered me Pie, EPat, Murton, Hill and Veal, I'd still say no if I was the Marlins GM.

We just don't have the talent to get Cabrera in a bidding war, which there will be if he ever hits the open market. Pretending otherwise is ridiculous. Our farm system is devoid of top tier talent.

Zambrano and Murton would get him, but I would be worried about that deal afterwards.

Yep, assuming he's on the market there's only about 3 or 4 teams that have the top tier young talent for him.

Exactly. Why would they trade him anyways? He's a sure thing, probably to a safe bet to put up Pujols numbers for the next decade. Yeah he'll be expensive some day, but by then, who knows, maybe the Marlins will be giving out contracts again.

I think the Angels or the Dodgers would be able to pull of a Cabrera trade.

To be honest though, the Marlins don't need that much more in order to compete. They would need a legit power threat to replace Cabrera, and probably another starter or two.

I agree though, if anyone could land Cabrera with young talent, it's one of those two teams.

I just think these 2 teams have some MLB ready mega talent that Florida would want. I'd love to hear the offers they would get for him.

Zambrano's approaching FA. What's the Marlins' payroll again?

realize that i'm saying that if it means we have the money to sign both schmidt and zito, we let aram walk. pitching is much more important than offense.

and i just don't like the staff of the team you've assembled. that's terrible.

zito and schmidt would make this staff more than merely above average.

Just because the money's available doesn't mean we'd be able to outbid anyone for either. I have severe doubts about Zito and Schmidt being anything other than overpaid, fairly good pitchers (Schmidt especially). None of their numbers jump out at me and scream #1 starter. They just happen to be the biggest names on the market this winter.

schmidt's posted a sub-4 era in 4 of the last 5 seasons (once eclipsing the sub-3 area), while throwing at least 175 innings each year. zito's posted a sub-4 era in 6 of his 7 major league seasons, which would likely come down in a move to the nl--and, since his rookie season, he's never thrown less than 213 innings or made less than 34 starts in a single season. those facts jump out at me.

I happen to think Prior becomes himself again next season. I think Hill can be just as effective as Zito for about a tenth of the cost. I think Padilla is every bit as good as Schmidt, and will be about half of his cost. Z is Z, and we have plenty of capable 5th starter candidates.

can hill be just as good as zito? i hope so, and if he can, wouldn't it be nice to have another pitcher in the rotation pitching at that level. it's not an either/or question here. i'll take both. hill being as good as zito is not the point.

prior being himself next season is not a risk we can afford to make again. slot him in the #5 position ad replace him with mateo or guzman if he can't go.

Also, if you disagree with my opinion on Zito/Schmidt, why not balance the roster by keeping Aramis and only sign one of Zito/Schmidt? Wouldn't your team be better off having a balance between pitching and offense? Pitching isn't so much more important as to let your best offensive player go to sign 2 guys that aren't in the top 25 at their position.

i don't care about having balance. i'd rather have a great staff and have an offense with a good IsoD than field a rotation with vicente (barf) padilla in it.

It'll be interesting to see how MacPhail's departure and Dusty's extension/good-bye affect Ramirez's decision on staying in Chicago.

Personally, I think Hendry will keep him here and that's why Hendry didn't get the axe. Lord knows he deserved it.
